October 2020

Dear Fellow North Carolinian,

As part of our continuing effort to provide timely research and education materials to the citizens of our State, the North Carolina Family Policy Council is pleased to provide you with this impartial and nonpartisan Voter Guide for the 2020 General Election.

In the past, we’ve heard from citizens across the State who were frustrated over the lack of reliable information about candidates running for elected office. Radio and television ads often present what the candidates want you to hear, but where do you go for information regarding what candidates really think about the issues that matter to you and your family? When candidate positions are not known, the gathering of enough information to make an informed decision can become a burden—sometimes resulting in voter frustration and even apathy.

Years ago, NC Family committed to providing a public service to the voters of our state by asking candidates for congressional and state-level offices in North Carolina what they think about a variety of issues, and then passing this information along to the public.

In compiling this Voter Guide, we mailed candidate questionnaires to all candidates running for the U.S. Senate and U.S. House, N.C. Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, Governor and Council of State, and N.C. Senate and N.C. House. The list of candidates is based on official records obtained from the N.C. State Board of Elections as of September 8, 2020. We attempted to personally contact each candidate to encourage his or her participation in the Voter Guide project.

To facilitate processing and printing, we used a standard response grid of “Yes,” “No,” or “Undecided,” but we also invited candidates to provide additional comments and/or explanations for their answers. Those comments can be viewed by accessing scanned PDF copies of the candidates’ questionnaires on the Voter Guide portion of our website at www.NCFamilyVoter.com.

We hope you find this Voter Guide helpful. We encourage you to stay current on public policy issues important to North Carolina families by frequently accessing our website at www.ncfamily.org and SIGNING UP to receive our excellent publications and email updates. You can also connect with us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram!

May God bless you, your family, and our nation this election year!

Sincerely,

John L. Rustin, President NC Family Policy Council

The North Carolina Family Policy Council acknowledges the obligation of judges to maintain impartiality in judicial decisions. In 2002, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that it is unconstitutional to prevent judicial candidates from expressing their views on “disputed legal or political issues.” As a result, candidates for judicial office may freely express opinions on legal or political issues without fear of being sanctioned by judicial or legal ethics authorities.
