Building Committee Update Thanks to all who attended the September 25th “Town Hall” Meeting to learn more
about the Phase II design. At the Congregational meeting on September 30, Session
provided a general overview of the Phase II design. The congregation adopted by voice
vote the following two motions:
1. endorse the design and concept of the Phase II building plan as developed by
Session.
2. that Session report back to the Congregation by no later than April 14, with a
detailed and comprehensive plan for paying for the construction of the Phase II.
“Do not put your trust in princes, in
mortals, in whom there is no help.”
I begin with a prediction: whoever wins
the Presidential election, disappointment
is coming. Whether or not your choice
for the highest office is elected, you will
be disappointed sooner or later. Believe it
or not, Psalm 146 is our Psalter reading
for November 3 (see verse 3 above).
Don’t be discouraged, because if our
trust is well-placed, our hope can be
grounded on an eternal base: “Happy are
those whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the LORD their God,
who made heaven and earth, the sea, and
all that is in them; who keeps faith for-
ever;” (5-6a)
It is the opening of the Psalm that en-
courages me most as we face another
election.
“Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD,
O my soul!
I will praise the LORD as long as I live;
I will sing praises to my God all my life
long.”
So, if your candidate wins, praise the
Lord! If your candidate is defeated,
praise the Lord! If you become excited
about the next four years, praise the Lord!
If you are now worried about the results,
praise the Lord!
There is nothing that can happen on
Election Day that should shift your focus
away from giving praise to the God who
created you, redeemed you in Christ, and
sustains you by the power of the Holy
Spirit throughout the course of your life.
So vote with courage and conviction
that you will rejoice in the Lord no matter
who wins.
See you in worship.
Warmly,
VOTE, and REJOICE!

High Hurdles Collection One by Lauraine Snelling
Fourteen-year-old DJ Randall wants nothing more than to compete as a show jumper
in the Olympics. The challenges that stand in her way only spur her to work harder
toward her dream. Whether it’s mucking out stalls and hosting pony parties to earn
money to buy her first horse or navigating the changing family dynamics at home, DJ
relies on her faith in God to see her through the most daunting obstacles. Collection
One includes Olympic Dreams, DJ's Challenge, Setting the Pace, Out of the Blue, and
Storm Clouds.
Holly’s Heart Collection One by Beverly Lewis
Thirteen-year-old Holly is dealing with the major concerns of every preteen and teen-
age girl: boys, family, and school. But with the help of her friends and her faith in
God, Holly is able to survive her first boyfriend and her first breakup, a crush on her
student teacher, and a new baby sister “invading” her house. Volume One includes
Best Friend, Worst Enemy; Secret Summer Dreams; Sealed With a Kiss; The Trouble
With Weddings; and California Crazy.
Girl’s Only! Volume 1 by Beverly Lewis
Jenna, Livvy, Heather, and Manda strive for their best in their respective sports: gym-
nastics, figure skating, ice-dancing, and downhill skiing. Their ultimate goal: the
Olympics. As each girl struggles with life’s challenges and rejoices with each triumph,
the encouragement of the other Girls Only club members and their faith in God give
the girls the moral support needed to push their limits and learn important lessons.
Volume 1 includes Dreams on Ice, Only the Best, A Perfect Match and Reach for the
Stars.
Girl’s Only! Volume 2 by Beverly Lewis
Jenna, Livvy, Heather, and Manda continue in their ultimate goal: the Olympics. As
each girl struggles with new challenges and triumphs, the encouragement of the other
Girls Only club members and their faith in God give the girls the moral support needed
to learn important lessons. Volume 2 includes Follow the Dream, Better than Best,
Photo Perfect and Star Status.

Serve Up Some Warmth The Micah Cold Night Shelter will operate beginning in November through the second
week of March. Our church will help set-up the shelter and check-in guests each Wednes-
day of the month including the 5th Wednesday in January. Each team of 5 or 6 will re-
ceive a notification on the nights the shelter is open. You will need to arrive at 6:15 p.m.
and most evenings you will be able to leave around 7:30 p.m. The shelter is located at
Route 3 East past the Ferry Farm Wal-Mart at 750 Kings Hwy. There is a blue sign out
front that says 750 Kings Hwy and the shelter is located in the little red building on top of
the hill. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Bruce Harvey, 373-7057
([email protected]). Please be in prayer for the homeless in the Fredericks-
burg area during the upcoming cold months and also the volunteers assisting with the
shelter.
Josh Heikkila, the
missionary we support in
West Africa, will be here to
visit with us on Sunday,
November 11. This will be
an exciting time for all our
church to get to know Josh
in a personal way and to
learn what he is doing in his
work in Ghana, Nigeria,
Togo and Niger. Our church
has supported Josh over the
last 3 years. He is a gradu-
ate of Dartmouth College,
has a Masters of Divinity
from the University of
Chicago and served as a
youth pastor at Hope Presby-
terian Church in St. Paul,
Minnesota. While in high
school, college and semi-
nary, he spent time in Ar-
gentina, Hungary and Croa-
tia. He was a young adult
volunteer in Ghana in 2002.
Make your plans now to
be a part of this exciting
day. Josh will share in a
moment for mission during
both worship services and he
will spend time with our 3rd
through 12th graders during
Church School. On Sunday
afternoon at 2:30 p.m., in the
Middle House, the entire
congregation is invited to
hear about Josh’s work first-
hand while enjoying some
dessert. Sunday evening
Josh will have some time
with the Session.

Drivers Needed for Meals on Wheels Meals on Wheels is a program to provide a cold noontime meal and a hot evening meal
for the elderly and convalescent. Subscribers pay for the meals, which are prepared by
Mary Washington Hospital and delivered by volunteers Mondays through Fridays.
Volunteers are needed to deliver meals once or more a month. Meals on Wheels is
losing three drivers now and possibly others soon. To volunteer please call Mel Wright,
371-1517, or Ron Smith, 371-4696.
Save the dates! Community Dinners are November 17 and December 15 from 2:00 - 6:00 p.m.
in the Fellowship Hall. The dinners are for anyone in the community who would
like good food and fellowship. Volunteers are needed to cook, serve, visit, or
provide music. Pumpkin and/or apple pies are needed to serve for dessert, and to
give to the dinner guests. The more pies the better! Want to help? Contact
Karen Johnson, 371-2719 ([email protected]).

Annual Pledges
As you can see from the graph above, we are down in the number of pledges received for the Annual Campaign. Al-
though we’re down by only one pledge card, it’s still a trend we don’t like. Please help us reverse the downward trend
by turning in your 2013 pledge card on (or before) Pledge Sunday, which is 11/04.
Thanks to everyone for your support,
The Annual Campaign Committee—Dick Balch, Gary Boshears, Susan Farley, Jim Ford, Debe Garrison, John Gar-
rison, Pete Kolakowski, Amy McCullough, Al Moreau, Brad Repp, Charlie Rowe, Linda Sweet and Jeremy Vaughn.
Drop in Annual Pledges
Do you sometimes forget whether you’ve made your
monthly contribution to the church? Now there’s an easy
way to avoid that worry—give online.
Through the church’s website, fredericksburgpc.org,
you can set up your contribution to recur weekly, monthly,
or quarterly. You can also make a one-time gift. You can
use your checking account or credit card.
Simply click on “Give now” on the church’s website.
You’ll then be asked to sign in to the church’s Member
Directory. If you’ve never signed in, click “Need a login?”
You’ll see a color-coded password strength indicator; you
can ignore it in order to use a familiar password that you’ll
remember.
Once you’ve signed in, not only can you give electroni-
cally, but you can see your past contributions. You can
also look up events on the church calendar, e-mail every-
one in your circle, or locate contact information of others.
While the ability to contribute online is available to eve-
ryone, only people who are already in our database can
look up other information. Please contact me at
[email protected] for help.

Deacon Reflections One of the Deacon’s goals is to let you know the ways you can become involved in fellowship within our congrega-
tion. Over the next few months we will show you areas that we know will entice you to want to work in fellowship
with your congregational members. There are ten major session committees that oversee the continual smooth opera-
tion of our congregation. The committees are: Administration, Building and Grounds, Christian Education, Congrega-
tional Care, Evangelism, Fellowship and Group Ministries, Mission, Personnel and Volunteers, Stewardship, and Wor-
ship.
To begin, we will start with the Administration committee. The volunteers on this committee work in supporting the
church administration staff in all areas. They are looking at ways of digitizing the older photo-
graphs of church history. They help in maintaining the church website, and are recording the
Sunday sermons. Help is always welcome. You can contact the church office to learn how you
can work with this committee.

Thoughts from Our Youth Director Did you dress up for Halloween? We had
some great costumes at the Velocity Fall Carni-
val! What is it about dressing up or playing pre-
tend that is fun? We all like to do it, perhaps it is
the reminiscing to childhood, or maybe it is a
way to imagine life in a different way. The Fu-
sion (Senior High Youth) got a chance to pretend
in October when we played “Underground
Church.” We simulated, pretended, that we lived
in a police environment where Christianity was
illegal. The teams of youth had to make their
way through a predetermined area of downtown
to find people who were their contacts to receive
clues to their safe house. All the while, secret
police (the youth advisors) were perusing them,
even throwing a few in “jail.” One group, minus
a couple of jailed members, did make it to their
safe house. It was a fun, exhilarating evening
capped by pizza. But in all the pretending, the
putting on the costume of persecuted Christians,
we got a small glimpse into what their lives
might be like, and we all celebrated our religious
freedom. Playing pretend can be a powerful tool.
In what ways are you imagining life in someone
else’s shoes?

Christmas is coming. . . Where can you do your Christmas shopping, enjoy time with your brothers and sisters
in Christ, sample tasty treats, and help others, all in one place? At the Alternative
Giving Fair, of course!
This year’s Fair will be held on Sunday, November 18, from 9:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., in
Fellowship Hall. At the Fair you can purchase textiles, jewelry, and other crafts to
support fair trade artisans; you can purchase delicious Zuni peanuts to support Presbyte-
rian Homes and Family Services, and you can purchase chickens, heifers, and other
livestock to support the Heifer Project. These are just a few of the shopping opportuni-
ties in store! In addition to shopping, you will also have the opportunity to meet with
representatives from many of the organizations our church supports.
We will need volunteers to staff the checkout table and some participant
tables, prepare baked goods, and work in the kitchen. Look for sign-up sheets
outside of worship in early November as well as inserts in the church bulletin.
The Mission Committee is excited about this opportunity for fellowship,
learning, and giving, and we look forward to seeing you there!
