The front and rear edges of the seat can be raised andlowered to fit your particular requirements in terms ofleg length and thigh support. Even the foot angles areprecisely calculated in order to avoid tired legs onlong journeys.

The rear window is electrically heated to ensure clearrear vision even under the severe conditions found inthe Arctic Circle.

Volvo owners drive more miles than theaverage driver. So Volvo has paidparticular attention to making the driverand passenger seats as comfortable aspossible.Since most people first experience fatiguei n the lumbar region of their back and intheir legs we have even further improvedour famous adjustable lumbar support inthe front seats. From the driving seat, a Volvo provides almost totallyunrestricted all round vision. The corner pillars areno wider than the distance between your eyes. Thusyou 'see round' them. The interior rear view mirrorand the large (138 cm 2 ) anti-dazzle outside doormirror provide excellent rear vision.

Twelve air intake points provide extremely efficientthrough flow ventilation. You can also adjust thesupply of warm or cool air to your exactrequirements. There is a quiet running three-speedfan. The outstanding road-holding of the 240 series is dueto a number of factors, for example, the precision rackand pinion steering, the spring strut front suspensionand a live rear axle with coil springs and an anti-roll

bar that provides the wide steel belted radial ply tyreswith maximum road contact area.

From lane changing in city traffic to thesudden changes of direction necessary inan emergency, a car must behave in asafe, predictable manner. As handling androadholding characteristics changeaccording to road conditions it is importantfor the driver to react in a calm andcontrolled way.Through an extensive researchprogramme involving experienced testand rally drivers as well as every-daymotorists, Volvo have created a car withexceptional characteristics. In a Volvo 240series the driver can control almost everysituation, even extreme emergencies,using normal driving techniques.The illustration on the right shows how thecar behaves when cornering under normaldriving conditions (unbroken line). Inextreme situations (broken line) wei nstinctively expect the car to behave in thesame way. If the actual behaviour of thecar does not coincide with theseexpectations, as in the case of A or B, thenthere is considerable risk of the driverl osing control of the car completely. AVolvo behaves as you would expect it to,because Volvo have 'respect for theunexpected'.A car that reacts quickly without surprisingthe driver contributes enormously todriving safety.

If one of the brake circuits fails, the 244 and 245 canstill be braked without increasing the tendency to skidand retain 80% of braking power. Moreover, it doesnot matter which brake circuit fails. Some of ourcompetitors, with other types of braking systems, dorequire longer stopping distances. They also have atendency to skid when their best circuit is out ofoperation.

The Volvo test tracks are used not only to learn aboutcars, but also to investigate how a wide variety ofdrivers respond to critical situations on the road.

All Volvo 240 series cars are fitted with disc brakes aswell as relief valves which prevent the rear wheelsfrom locking up before the front wheels duringemergency braking. The unique triangle-split dualcircuit braking system provides you with 80% ofbraking even if one circuit were to fail. Directionalstability is maintained by both front wheels beingbraked simultaneously.

If sudden changes of direction are required, the 240series still exhibits its exceptional road holdingcapabilities.

I n most cars if one of the brake circuits should fail it isnecessary to press extremely hard on the brakepedal to operate the brakes. This is not true in aVolvo. All 240 series cars feature a stepped boremaster cylinder. This ensures that pedal pressuredoes not increase to any significant extent, even ifone of the circuits should fail.

Weight distribution is vitally important to handling androad holding. The 240 series has ideal weightdistribution between front and rear axles.

Many of the features which have beenstandard in Volvo cars for years are nowrequired by law in many countries. The 240series, therefore, has won an internationalreputation for both its active and passivesafety features.The 240 has been designed to reduce thestresses to driver and passenger in theunfortunate event of a collision. Feature byfeature, the cars are built up in such a wayas to provide the highest degree ofprotection possible. To cushion the impactof a collision there are energy-absorbingcrumple zones both front and rear. The Volvo steering wheel provides five-fold safety:1. the lower steering shaft gives way. 2. the steeringshaft compresses. 3. the steering column slidesforwards and downwards. 4. the steering wheelattachment 'gives way'. 5. the padded area over thecentre of the steering wheel provides furtherprotection.

To protect passengers from side impacts there aretubular reinforced bars in the side doors. There arealso extra strong latches to prevent doors burstingopen.

Volvo 245The Volvo 245 is a real five door estate car,not a modified saloon. It can carry fiveadults in comfort and still take plenty ofl uggage. The rear seat can be dropped tocreate a cargo area over six feet long with70 cu ft of load space. To enable you to loadbulky items, the rear door is 45.7in wideand 30.7in high.
