VOLUNTEERS PRAISED FOR OUT-STANDING SERVICE ON ANZAC DAY

SERVING THE OPAL CAPITAL OF THE WORLD SINCE 1982

There is no doubt that the Coober Pedy RSL wasthe hub of town on ANZAC DAY. Enthusiastic

volunteers arrived at 4.45 am to start preparingbreakfast for those attending the Dawn Service.

At the day’s end, President Bryce Tickner was stillrevving, but took time to ponder, praise and thank thevolunteers who manned the various stations all day.

“As president of the Coober Pedy RSL I would like tothank every volunteer that helped make ANZAC Daysuch a united community event. Without volunteersbehind the scenes helping, it wouldn’t have been possible.Most people don’t see the work they put in.”

“Frank and Freda, Erica and Paul, Gerda and Julie Whata great breakfast that was. Every year you guys arethere in the morning at 4.45am waiting for me to turnup.”

“From Grant Steele the Vice President and Jan his rock,Jacquie Boland for always being there no matter whatthe situation and pushing with new ideas; Geoff Squireswho did a sterling job behind the bar; Donna, Karen,and Jacquie, for making the wreaths, and sellingmerchandise.

It wouldn’t be ANZAC Day without the traditional gameof Two-Up. Two-Up originated ....... and was popularduring the war and is still popular. The game generateda lot of interest well into the evening with locals all tryingtheir luck.

Another highlights of the day was the intallation of aFrench Mirage Fighter Wing, donated by the RAAF.

Thomas Hammermeister what can I say? You arealways there when we need something; no questionsasked you just jump in. Rob Upton, thank you for thework you did and to come out on your day off to help usout!

Also Ken Boland for his help cleaning up with his bobcatand truck - awesome thank you!

Peter Lane who has done so much work behind thescenes as treasurer. Peter is leaving us soon and hasresigned as treasurer. On behalf of all the RSL memberswe thank you for your service to the RSL!

To Colin, Tim, Penny at IGA every year when we askfor anything you say no problem, what do you need? Ahuge thank you for the bacon eggs and bread, and oneday before Anzac day Colin says to Thomas, “Well Ithink you should put the wing up for Anzac Day.” Hewas there waiting for me on his trusty fork lift smilingwith the attitude, “Let’s get this done”. Thomas, his sonand Donna, all turning up to get it done, That iscommunity spirit and what a great coming together itwas at the dawn service with the wing up.

To the Speedway Club for lunch and dinner. All of themembers were in there cooking, just so people could havea great feed. You guys have been a great addition to theRSL and I thank you for your effort.

To anyone I have forgotten I apologise and I would liketo say thank you for making Anzac Day special becausewithout your support we would not have an RSL and it isimportant that we keep this tradition going.

Those that attended last Council meeting on9th April would have noticed a layout changein the Council Chamber.

Inspired by a visit to the City of OnkaparingaCouncil while attending a series of meetings inAde-laide the Mayor Michelle Provatidis noticedthe layout of their council chamber, Michelleliked the openness and more engagingatmosphere.

On the 26th April, Acting CEO Neil Brownjoined DCCP.

Neil has worked in the Commercial, InternationalNon-Government and Government sectors. Hebrings over 30 years executive experience ofmanaging teams and engaging withcommunities. Neil said, “I am pleased to behere and am looking forward to working withthe Mayor, Councilors and staff and meeting asmany people as I can in the community”.

After considering the feedback provided in the 120day community consultation period that concludedin March, the Government has shortlisted thevoluntarily nominated site in Barndioota, SouthAustralia, as a possible site for a National RadioactiveWaste Management Facility.

THE HON JOSH FRYDENBERG MP, Minister forResources, Energy and Northern Australia said,“Importantly, Barndioota’s shortlisting does not representa final decision to locate the facility, but rather, it presentsan opportunity to continue consultation and conceptdevelopment with the community to ensure informationis provided and any outstanding questions are answered.”

“Last November, the Government shortlisted sixvoluntarily nominated sites for community consultation,with three in South Australia, and one in each of NewSouth Wales, Queensland, and the Northern Territory.During the 120-day consultation period that followed, myDepartment undertook more than 180 face-to-facemeetings with stakeholders, and visited the communitiesof each of the six shortlisted sites at least three times.Further, at least 35,000 information packs were deliveredto these communities and in turn more than 1,700individual submissions were received. Randomisedcommunity surveys were also undertaken to obtain athorough understanding of the levels of support for thisfacility across each community.”

It is a sad day when a community event such as theCoober Pedy Races and Gymkhana cannot gain

enough community support to form a committee.At the second AGM for the year, held on the 30

April 2016 a quorum could not be reached so themeeting could not be held. At the AGM held 4

weeks earlier the positions of President, Secretaryand Treasurer were not filled.

The previous President, Secretary and Treasurer stooddown from their positions due to leaving town or familycommitments. It is time for a new committee andunfortunately no one is stepping forward to undertakethe roles that largely go on behind the scenes over themonths before the races.

Without a committee being formed the club will have tohold a meeting to, at best, cancel this years race meetingin the hope of a committee being able to be formed laterin the year, or at worst wind up the club.

The Coober Pedy Races have been an iconic CooberPedy Event for 47 years. It has raised hundreds ofthousands of dollars over the life of the club. The moneyraised has all been donated to charity. In the early daysa significant amount was donated to the Royal FlyingDoctor as well as local charities. Over the last 10 yearsthe club has given away $42,000 to local charities andcauses which support Coober Pedy residents.

The committee has always been relatively small for thesize of the event. The club gets a lot of support on theweekend of the races which is fantastic. We have a lotof volunteers both local and visitors who work togetherover the weekend and the days before and after to makethe event a success.

The race club needs community support now. The rolesof President, Secretary and Treasurer (and if possibleassistant secretary and assistant treasurer) are criticalin preparing for the event. The club needs at least threeorganised and dedicated people to step up and undertakethese positions. It needs people who can put in timebefore the event on the administrative tasks.Membership is still strong but no one on the previouscommittee is able to undertake those positions and putin the time required.

Another AGM to try and form a committee will be heldon the Tuesday the 24th May 6pm at the Coober PedyGolf Club. It will be critical to form a committee at thismeeting for the Race Weekend may be cancelled for2016 and the future of the club will be in jeopardy. Ifyou would like to be involved in this committee focussedon raising money for good causes please, please comealong to the meeting and help form a committee to benefitthe entire community.

Membership is free and committee membership is opento any members to volunteer. You don’t need to knowabout horses or motorbikes but you do need to be positiveabout creating a great event for visitors and locals alike.

The event attracts people from surrounding towns andproperties to visit Coober Pedy. It also in past yearsused to attract past residents and family to Coober Pedyto spend the weekend enjoying Coober Pedy’s hospitalityand the event itself. It provides a valuable event forother local clubs to raise money by holding food ormerchandise stalls.

Until this year it was the race and gymkhana weekendwith the biggest prize money on offer for the region.Over the last few years local business support andsponsorship has been slowly reducing. Local businesssupport, particularly through sponsorship but alsoindirectly through promotion of the weekend to potentialcustomers, is critical to allowing the committee to puton the event. If a committee can be formed this yearand you have an opportunity to support the event pleasedo so.

Police NewsDuring the evening of Thursday 21st April 2016, policeresponded to a request from SAAS to assist with theextrication of an injured female from Hospital Hill. MineRescue/SES and CFS also attended. A 60 year old femalewas walking back from admiring the view from the topof Hospital Hill when she slipped and sustained asubstantial injury to her right leg/hip. With the cooperationof all in attendance she was carried from the hill andconveyed to hospital.

On Wednesday 20th April and Thursday 21st April2016, the Dept. of Transport Depot, Stuart Highway,Coober Pedy was broken into. The office was enteredand vehicles interfered with. A set of spotlights were

On Thursday 28th April 2016, Police fromCoober Pedy attended a Police Foundation Dayceremony at Port Augusta. The South AustraliaPolice was established by Governor Hindmash on28th April 1838. A plaque was unveiled by PoliceCommissioner Grant Stevens to recognise thesignificant contribution of our pioneering policeofficers to the Far North of South Australia. Theplaque dedicated to those officers – some ofwhom paid the ultimate price while performingduties in the north of the state is now permanentlyon show at the Port Augusta Police Station.

At about 7 am, Tuesday 19th April 2016, Police attendedHutchinson Street, Coober Pedy, where hotel staff and acouncil employee had been assaulted in separate incidentsby the same offender. They were conveyed to hospitalwith minor injuries. After treatment they returned to theirduties. Of particular concern was the unprovoked natureof these attacks on people going about their regularbusiness.

The incidents were captured on CCTV. Police laterarrested a 27 year old male from Coober Pedy for multiplecounts of aggravated assault. He was refused bail andsubsequently remanded in custody to the Port AugustaGaol. He will appear before court again on 17th May.

During the evening of Tuesday 26th April 2016, Policeattended a crash between a vehicle and a cowapproximately 60 km South of Coober Pedy. The vehiclesustained substantial damage and was towed from thescene. The occupants were international tourists whowere fortunately travelling at a conservative speed andwearing seatbelts. As a result they did not receive anyinjuries.

This highlights the value of driving in accordancewith the conditions and wearing seatbelts. It alsohighlights the additional vigilance required to travelsafely after dark on remote roads with hazardssuch as wildlife and livestock.

Missing man instate’s far north

03 May 2016 7:48am Police are searching theLeigh Creek area for a man last seen onSaturday 30 April.

The man was staying at a remote station atAngepena and police were alerted to the fact thathe was missing at 4pm on Monday 2 May.

Staff at the station have located the man’s car andpolice commenced a search last night with the useof the police helicopter.

The police fixed wing aircraft will also be headingto the area this morning to continue the searchwith the assistance of members of the SES.

Letter to the editor,

Due to the misunderstanding among some in thecommunity I wish to clarify by this letter a few thingsregarding the Art & Craft Fair held at the Croatian Clubover the Easter Weekend.

The Art & Craft Fair is a sponsored event, completelyseparate from the Saturday markets or Trash & Treasuresheld in Coober Pedy.

The conception of this event was to showcase the manyartistic talents of Coober Pedy. The local art and crafttalent pool are invited to attend and given the opportunityto display and sell their hand produced wares, whetherthey are crafted or painted.

The Croatian Club and the Gem Trade Association were ap-proached on this basis and an agreement was made to use whathad been a vacant room to showcase the fantastic variety of Art& Craft available in the town. It is only for the Easter Weekendand is an event held in a dust free climate controlled environmentthat runs for two days.

Now in it’s second year the Art & Craft Fair has created anotheraspect to the Easter weekend festivities that hopefully will attractvisitors on the basis of Art & Craft. It is a goal for local art andcraft people to work towards annually.

I wish to thank all of those who participated; the sponsors, GemTrade Association and the Croatian Club for giving all artists andcrafts people in this town a place to showcase their work.

Smartphones are adriving menace say police

29 Apr 2016 3:37pm. Using a phone while driving needs tobecome totally socially unacceptable, police said today.

“We believe this is a significant road safety issue which impactsthe entire community,” said Detective Chief Inspector DeniseGray, the acting officer in charge of Traffic Support Branch,said.

“Tackling this issue is going to take a change in communityculture – that means family, friends and colleagues saying toeach other ‘put it down’.

“A consumer survey* last year found that almost 80 per centof Australians have a smartphone and that there are about 15million smartphones in use across the country.

“We also know that most people instantly reach for their phonewhenever it rings or beeps, but doing that while driving posesan unjustified risk to all road users.”

Launching twin road safety operations today – Distractionand Belt Up – Chief Inspector Gray said judging by SAPOL’spast experience, 50 Adelaideans a day could expect to becaught using their mobile while driving over the next month.

In February, 1413 drivers thought their phones were moreimportant than their lives and 429 people didn’t care enoughabout their safety to wear a seat belt.

The new month-long campaigns – focused on mobile phoneuse in the city and seat belt use on rural roads – kick off onSunday.

Research shows that using a mobile phone while drivingincreases the risk of crashing by at least four times and youare 10 times more likely to be killed in a road crash if youare not wearing a seatbelt.

“These figures clearly indicate that a fine may be the leastof a drivers worries,” said Chief Inspector Gray.

“If you can’t leave your phone alone while driving, put it inthe glove box, or the back seat,” she urged.

“This behaviour is simply unacceptable.”

The fine for a driver failing to belt up is $341 (plus a $60victims of crime levy), while the fine for using a mobilephone is $315 (plus a $60 victims of crime levy).

The free vaccine for vulnerable members of thecommunity is available from local GP clinics,while the general public can also purchase thevaccine at a small cost from their GP orcommunity pharmacy if they are aged over 16years.

SA Health Communicable Disease Control BranchDirector, Dr Ann Koehler, said immunisationremains one of the most effective ways ofreducing the impact of flu on the community.

“Last year SA Health recorded its highest numberof flu notifications on record, with more than15,000 people struck down by the illness,” DrKoehler said.

“South Australians eligible for the free vaccineinclude those over 65 years of age, pregnantwomen, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanderschildren aged six months to less than five yearsand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peopleaged 15 years and older.

“People with chronic medical conditions, suchas such as heart disease, lung disease anddiabetes, are also eligible for the free vaccine.

“Flu can hit anybody at any time so it’s importantthat people take the simple step of getting a flushot to protect not only themselves, but the entirecommunity.”

In 2015 SA Health recorded a record 15,658 flunotifications. So far this year SA Health hasrecorded 545 notifications of flu compared to1,011 at the same time last year.

This year the Commonwealth-funded vaccine willinclude four strains of flu instead of three,including two flu A strains and two flu B strains.Symptoms of flu can include rapid onset of fever,headache, muscle aches, fatigue, sneezing,running nose, sore throat and coughing.

At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly.

On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line.

If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. Put the number ‘1’ in the box for the party or group that is your first choice, a ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you’ve numbered at least 6 boxes.

If you choose to vote below the line, you must number at least 12 boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates in the order of your choice.

THE HORROR TRACKTHAT BECAME A HIGHWAY

On Sunday April 17, 20 members and friends of theHistorical Society drove to three nearby places on

the Stuart Highway that coincide with the old HorrorTrack, to hear stories of how the route evolved overthe years, beginning with the first journey in 1921

from Coober Pedy to Kingoonya. This wasundertaken by Arch Burnett and Jack Norton

driving “Wilful Murder” a Model T Ford, after theywere awarded the first mail contract from

Kingoonya to Coober Pedy.

A Tourist’s Road Guide, complete with map and detailsof the track, published, circa 1927, was studied withinterest. This guide and map was used by a lone 18 yearold Englishman, travelling to Darwin in 1929 in a tinyAustin Seven. His story and that of a married couple whoalso made the journey the same year, is told in thefascinating book, “Telegraph Tourists”.

At the Mabel Creek turnoff, some history was told of AlfTurner, who took up Mabel Creek Station circa 1928,and a newspaper article read from 1936, telling how inthat year, 400 cars had passed through Mabel Creek. Thearticle I suspect, was attempting to drum up interest in aproposed car race of 6,500 miles around and throughAustralia, stating that conditions on the road from Adelaideto Darwin were comparable to those between Sydneyand Melbourne. Extremely doubtful!

At this point, we took off our fly nets and retired to John’sPizza to hear more recent stories of adventures andmisfortunes on the track by Broni, Brian and Edward. Ofparticular interest were those told by Trevor Gotte whoworked for Kalman and Yolanda Szuk in the 1970’s, whenmany ingenious repairs were made to road damagedtrucks, caravans and cars.

Judy Sparrow kindly provided us with notes written byMike Denison who worked on the sealing of the StuartHighway in the 1980’s, describing the equipment heworked with, their camps, living and working conditions.This information along with studying the brochurecommemorating the completion of the sealed highwaymade for a fitting end to the afternoon.

I think we all agreed that while we would not like to returnto the “horror track”, there was a friendliness then thatcannot be found these days on the sealed highway.Everyone would stop to check if others were OK andeven help with repairs, at times even sharing an impromptupicnic.

A new set of guides that aim to ensure fair trading inAustralia and protect consumers and businesses arenow available online.

The Australian Consumer Law (ACL) guides were updatedby consumer regulators to help businesses learn abouttheir rights and obligations and assist legal practitionersto provide advice to their clients about how to complywith the law.

Commissioner for Consumer Affairs, Dini Soulio, saidthe ACL has been in force across the country for morethan five years, and in that time important legal precedentshave been set.

“The new guides include a range of examplesdemonstrating how the one consistent national law is beinginterpreted and legal outcomes that are impacting positivelyon the marketplace.

“The penalties handed down by the state and federal courtshave been significant, some in the range of $2 to $3 milliondollars in recent Federal Court cases. These high profilecases and substantial penalties are also now resulting insignificant media and public attention.”

Five guides are available covering the followingtopics:* Consumer guarantees* Unfair contract terms* Product safety* Sales practices* Avoiding unfair business practices

Mr Soulio said the guides can be used as a valuableresource to answer common questions such as: what youcan say in your advertising, how to compete fairly, whatto do if you realise you are selling an unsafe product, andwhen you must provide a customer with a repair,replacement, or refund.

“Under the ACL, all businesses have responsibilities whenit comes to the products or services they deliver, howthey market them and how they deal with their customers,”he said.

“We want a thriving business community in South Australiawhere businesses are both innovative and respectconsumer rights.

“Consumers benefit when businesses trade fairly, but onthe flip side, both consumers and businesses suffer whenthere is non-compliance.

“Since the introduction of the ACL, regulators aroundAustralia have worked cooperatively in enforcement,education and policy and will continue to provide thissupport and action around the law.”
