Over 120 people attended the 25th anni-versary of the formation of the National Volunteers Week which was celebrated with a morning tea on Monday 12th May. The theme for this year’s event was “Celebrate the Power of Volunteering”. Member for Gympie, David Gibson MP again invited local community organisa-tions to nominate a couple of valued vol-unteers to represent their organisation at the morning tea. Our Special Guest, Lady Mayoress, Mrs Dulcie Dyne presented the certificates on behalf of Mr Gibson. This event has been held over the past 8 years throughout the Gympie electorate with the numbers nominated this year once again exceeding all expectations.

This year saw some 76 organisations nominate people to receive a certificate. Eight married couples were nominated and three ladies were nominated by two separate organisations each. Thanks must go to the Gympie Regional Council for the use of the Civic Centre and to Coles Gympie for their donation of the wonderful celebration cake.

Since the scoping of the needs and gaps of volun-teers in the Gympie Region in 2010 there has been pro-gress. In 2011 & 2012 grant sub-missions by Gympie Volun-teers received over $50,000 from the Australian Gov-ernment for assets and shared resources for a doz-en local not for profit com-munity groups. Gympie Volunteers is man-aged by Tanya Easterby and is auspice by Cooloola Hu-man Services Network a peak body providing voice for human and community services sector to advocate for the delivery of local ser-vices. The partnership will contin-ue to grow in 2014 with a

future goal for a ‘space’ for volunteers to share admin-istrative resources, train-ing, meeting rooms, net-works and social engage-ments.

Gympie Volunteers

In May, Gympie Volun-teers launched a Face-book page to support the connectivity of volunteers in our region; to provide a

hub of information for vol-unteer organisations and groups to promote their services to the community and recruit new volunteers.

The first quarterly issue of Gympie Volunteers New-slink will be distributed in June 2014 via email or hardcopy. If you wish to receive this quarterly newsletter from Gympie Volunteers or con-tribute please email your request or information to: [email protected]

Delgos.

The students were to create their own graphic design portfolio of their skills learnt previously over the past two years and to extend on those skills to incorporate creative design to business cards or event flyers.

The project outcome displayed a visual concept and unique style of each student demon-strating a variety of techniques and mediums utililzed to cre-ate community flyers and busi-ness portfolios.

Future aspirations of students is to engage with local event committees to design event flyers.

An opportunity was extended to me by Visual Arts Teacher Ms Delgos to creatively en-gage with year 12 James Nash Visual Art students early this year.

“The students are exploring options in real life learning by mixing education with a need in the community,” said Ms

Meals on Wheels has had a place in the hearts and homes of Australians for more than 50 years. Helping frail older people and younger people with a disability and their car-ers stay in their homes where most are happi-est, is at the heart of what we do. Every day a friendly smile, a chat about the weather, a nutritious meal and knowing someone will drop by to say hello, changes the lives of many Australians and it’s not just the cli-

ents who value this con-tact, ask any of the 15,000 QLD volunteers and they will tell you reaching out and making a difference in some-body else’s day, makes their day. While meals can be de-livered to suit each cli-ent’s specific needs, the not-for-profit service is more than just a meal. As well as nutri-tional support, Meals on Wheels volunteers pro-vide important social contact and are able to monitor a client’s well-being, health and safety.

Admiring photos of grandchildren, discuss-ing the latest book re-lease may not be part of a job description for a volunteer, but these lit-tle things add up to a very big thing in a cli-ent’s life – having some-one share part of their day. Local Gympie volunteers work Monday-Friday and are closed Public Holidays. A variety of volunteer roles include: Kitchen: (6.30am-11.30am) Duties: peeling vegies,
