Greetings! It is true that we, the 4-H
volunteers are the fuel of 4-H. The LSU
AgCenter serves as the engine requesting fuel
(Volunteers) be infused into all components of
the system with the oil (Agents) making the
transitions smooth. 4-H membership requires
all parts of the body – Head, Heart, Hands and
Health to enjoy the journey of a well greased
engine.
We have had multiple membership
drives with poster sessions including the
Northwest, Central, Southeast, and Southwest,
Region Leader Trainings, and also the LAE4-
HA conference in Shreveport.
The summer membership meeting at
4-H University was well attended with many
volunteers signing up to serve on VLA com-
mittees. Ready for action volunteers from all
over the state just returned from the Southern
Region 4-H Volunteer Forum in Eatonton,
GA and have planned many activities during
National 4-H Week – Oct. 3-8, 2010.
Mark your calendar in bright green
and keep your 4-H agents aware that our
Volunteer Leaders Association state refuel-
ing is March 11-13, 2011 in Baton Rouge.
My cell is 337-308-3474, if you need
to clarify information on volunteer involve-
ment.
Sincerely,
Yvonne L Normand
VLA 4-H President

Louisiana Has A National 4-H Hall of Fame Inductee!
Longtime 4-H volunteer Ann Keene, of Tallulah, LA, was
inducted into the National 4-H Hall of Fame Oct. 8 in
Washington, D.C. Keene says she feels she would not
have become the person she is today without the support
and encouragement of 4-H Agents, extension personnel
and especially the 4-H members. She has worked as a 4-H
volunteer with more than 5,000 youth and 3,000 adults on
parish, state, regional and national levels.

I recently attended the Southern Region 4-H Volunteer Forum at
Rock Eagle in Eatonton, GA where the theme was ―4-H: There
Is An App For That‖. There truly was an app for anything a vol-
unteer leader could possibly need from a restful, productive envi-
ronment with good company, from fellow volunteers representing
13 different states - 4-H volunteers from all over the southern U.S. sharing their ideas and experiences. Information from sewing
and decorating to ATVs, outdoor skills, backpacking, science, engineering, technology and GEO caching as well as information on
youth development in a variety of settings and Operation Military Kids projects was available. One of the workshops I attended,
―Storytelling Around the Campfire‖ presented a great way of allowing youth to express their accomplishments, goals and dreams in
a healthy way to help foster self-esteem and self-worth. ―Games People Play and Then Some‖ was another workshop presentation
which gave a new twist on old ideas of how to get youth involved with meeting new people as well as new ideas on how to spruce
up club meetings.
I was also able to attend a couple of
workshops presented by our own native Louisiana
4-H representatives. Dr. Todd Tarifa, Gabe Stelly
(State Executive President) and Robert Fusilier
(State Executive Board member) presented a
workshop on state 4-H youth leadership boards.
It was refreshing to see Louisiana’s youth at the
head of the pack asking and encouraging adults to
empower them to lead other youth. Volunteers
from other states were motivated and impressed
to see our youth embracing various leadership
roles with success. Wow! What a refreshing and
rejuvenating week!
