How Do I Get Started? Here at Volunteering Kirklees we realise that first step into volunteering can often be a confusing one. We’ve produced this easy to use step-by-step guide to get you on the right path 1/ Read through the rest of this guide. The FAQs on the next page will answer some of the basic questions you may have. The opportunities listed later on will give you a feel for the variety of different roles available. 2/ Think about what kind of roles you’re interested in, what types of organisations you’d like to volunteer with, what skills you already have & what skills you’d like to gain / develop, where you would like to volunteer & how often. 3/ Once you have an idea of the type(s) of role(s) you are looking for you can either: Visit the www.do-it.org.uk website to search through the opportunities yourself or come to see us at the Volunteer Centre (15 Lord Street, Huddersfield, HD1 1QB) any Tuesday or Wednesday (10am-3pm) where you can meet with an advisor who will help you search. We also run a weekly session at Dewsbury Library every Thursday morning (10am-1pm).

What are CRB / DBS checks? Different opportunities have different application processes. Roles which involve working with vulnerable people (children, young people, people with disabilities, & the elderly) often require a Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check. The DBS check is a new process introduced in 2013 to replace the previous Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) check. More info about DBS checks can be found via the www.volunteeringkirklees.org.uk or by asking at the Volunteer Centre.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Spring / Summer 2013 Outlined below are some of the many opportunities currently available. Please contact Volunteering Kirklees for more details about these & many more.

Age UK (Calderdale & Kirklees) Org Details: Providing older people with a variety of services, including

information & advice, advocacy & support, day care & befriending.

Roles: Befriender – Visiting the elderly in their homes to provide

conversation, stimulation & a listening ear. May also involve helping with practical issues & offering to support to those wish hearing or visual issues Day Care Helper – Talking to people who attend the organisation’s numerous day care centres across the region & encouraging them to engage in social activities. Ideal for anyone with a hobby or passion they wish to share with others. Drivers – Transporting older people to & from the day care centres / their homes. Can use own car or organisation’s mini bus. Volunteer – Helping people with their recovery & rehabilitation after a hospital stay. Duties may include accompanying individuals to follow up appointments, collection of prescriptions, & making home visits to reduce / prevent depression. Marketing & Events Volunteers – Organising, promoting & attending fundraising events. Will include writing press releases & social media / website content. Meeters & Greeters – Offering a friendly face & helpful signposting information to older people who use attend their day centres in Dewsbury & Fartown. Swimming Project Volunteers – Helping older people attend their once weekly Swimming Project (currently running on Mondays). Duties involve everything from accompanying individuals on their journey to & from the pool, helping them prepare for the session, & providing support in the pool and / or watching on the sidelines.

Support: Travel expenses & induction training provided for all roles

Better Future For The Blind Org Details: A befriending service for the visually impaired, aiming to reduce

loneliness and isolation.

Roles: Activity Club Volunteers – Help members in their local area attend group meetings Befrienders – Visit a visually impaired person once a week, to provided companionship & friendship. Committee Member - Playing a strategic role in shaping the future of this organisation.

Support: Induction training provided

Location: Kirklees

Other: DBS check required

Breast Cancer Care Org Details: Providing practical & emotional advice & support to those

undergoing treatment for cancer.

Roles: Best Foot Forward Walk Leader – Planning, promoting and leading 30 minute walks designed to encourage physical activity and social interaction amongst those currently undergoing treatment.

Support: Travel & out of pocket expenses. Training provided

Commitment: Two 30 minute walks per month

Location: Kirklees

Other: Only suitable for individuals who have experienced treatment for cancer themselves, and are at least post 18 months from their initial diagnosis

Canal & River Trust Org Details: Entrusted with the care of 2,000 miles of waterways in England

& Wales, the trust works to inspire as many people as possible to connect with their canals & rivers.

Roles: Events Assistants & Co-ordinators – To encourage people to take an interest in their local waterways through fun activities. Provides plenty of opportunities to meet new people & improve communication skills.

Huddersfield Broad Towpath Taskforce – Held on the second Friday of every month, the Towpath Taskforce is a drop in session (from 10am-3pm) for volunteers to help with tasks such as painting, weeding, cutting back vegetation, litter picking & general maintenance.

Lock Keeper – Providing a polite and warm welcome to waterway visitors, assisting boaters through the locks and helping to maintain the area.

Retail & Catering Assistants – Preparing food & serving customers in the small but busy visitors attraction.

Visitor Centre Guides – Greeting visitors, providing information & answering any general enquiries regarding exhibits & nearby waterway attractions.

WOW Education Volunteers - Working as part of the WOW education team, duties include taking part in school visits, leading water safety activities, as well as researching local waterway history, & helping out with WOW marketing.

Support: Induction training provided

Location: Huddersfield

Cancer Research Org Details: The world’s largest volunteer supported organisation, dedicated

to cancer research.

Roles: Breast Cancer Awareness Ambassadors – Helping to distribute information in your local area, as well as contacting local businesses encouraging them to support the ‘Join The Fight’ campaign.

Fundraising Campaign Volunteers – Planning, organising & running a variety of fundraising activities.

Kirklees Action Team Members – Assisting at one-off fundraising & awareness raising events.

Shop Worker – Serving customers & sorting stock in one of the charity’s shops.

Volunteer Speakers / Community Representatives – Representing the charity in your local area & providing info for those wishing to get involved.

Location: Kirklees

Christ Assembly MESI Org Details: A new Christian group who aim to promote their faith, as well as

helping with the prevention & relief of poverty.

Roles: Fundraising Co-ordinator – Organising & leading fundraising activities, to help the group continue to develop and attract sponsorship. The work is flexible & new ideas are welcomed.

Support: On the job training, travel expenses may be provided

Commitment: Wednesday daytime, Saturday & Sunday afternoons

Location: Huddersfield Other: Good computer & communication skills essential. Previous

fundraising experience desirable

Citizens Online Org Details: A national charity set

up to tackle the issue of digital inclusion – to make sure that everyone has access to the Internet,& that individuals & communities alike understand the benefits of being online.

Roles: Digital Champion – Volunteers needed to help out at events & sessions; showing people the basics of using a computer, helping them to access the Internet, setting up email accounts & general guidance.

Support: Induction training provided

Location: Kirklees

Cloverleaf Advocacy Org Details: Advocacy helps people to get their voice heard. Cloverleaf

provides independent & confidential advocacy services for carers, older people, people with mental health needs, learning disabilities, physical & sensory impairments, and people with brain injuries.

Roles: Volunteer Befriender – Befrienders are needed to provide one-to-one support to vulnerable adults who are socially isolated. Support can be given in person, over the telephone, or in a group setting in Huddersfield or Dewsbury.

Support: Travel expenses provided. Induction and on-going training available

Commitment: Flexible

Communities United Project Org Details: Working with under-resourced communities, helping them to set

up & run sports & creative activities for young people.

Roles: Multisports / Coaching Assistants – To provide coaching at sports sessions; including football, kwik cricket, dodgeball. rounders & basketball, & / or street dance sessions. Playscheme Assistants – Running arts & crafts activities, such as; claywork, glass painting, jewellery making, card making, friendship bracelets, hair braiding & henna tattooing, for during school holidays. Trustees – Helping CUP to increase & diversify its range of activities, as well as offering guidance for the future. Youth Work Assistants - Providing assistance at football & multisport coaching sessions. Duties include assisting the coach, taking registers & general help. Assistance with day trips during school holidays also needed.

Location: Kirklees

CRI ‘The Base’ Org Details: Working with at risk groups in society, empowering individuals to

make positive changes in their lives. To achieve this, they provide access to training, education, employment opportunities & leisure activities.

Roles: Young Person’s Substance Misuse Volunteer – Working with young people (ages 10-25), providing assistance & support, as well as maintaining records of clients.

Support: Out of pocket expenses, training provided

Commitment: Flexible. Monday – Fridays, ideally for a minimum of six months

Location: Based in Huddersfield, but working throughout Kirklees

DEBRA Org Details: Helping people affected by EB (Epidermolysis Bullosa) – a

genetic disorder where the skin blisters and does not repair it. The organisation works to promote research into the cause, nature, treatment of EB, & to relieve the physical & mental suffering amongst those suffering with EB.

Roles: Cash Creators / Fundraisers / Event Specialists – Planning & running fundraising events. Fundraising Committee Member – Co-ordinating fundraising activities & generating new ideas. Public Speaker – Representing the group in your local community Shop Volunteers – Providing retail help in the organisation’s charity shops, serving customers & sorting stock. Social Media Guru – Managing the organisation’s online presence to encourage interaction from others. Youth Engagement Volunteer – Helping identify & plan opportunities to talk to local youth groups about DEBRA.

Location: Kirklees. Holmfirth, Netherton, Salendine Nook for shop based roles

Denby Dale Centre Org Details: Working with the Denby Dale & Kirkburton local community, the

centre helps to reduce poverty & feelings of isolation of those most vulnerable.

Roles: Activity Club Support Workers - Welcoming & chatting to older people, setting up & clearing tables, assisting in delivery of activities (arts/crafts, singing, local history etc), preparing & serving refreshments, keeping records/monitoring, & making people comfortable Fundraising & Promotion Volunteers – Helping the fundraising team with ideas & suggestions for future events. IT Trainers - Poviding one to one support & training on digital technology for adults. One-to-One Befrienders – Visiting socially isolated people in their homes, offering friendship & a listening ear. Receptionist / Cashier – Offering support at their drop in centre & charity shops. Trustees –Ensuring that the charity complies with legislative and regulatory requirements, as well as assisting with promotion, development, & financial management. Volunteer Drivers –To drive the group’s minibus (or own car) to escort members to & from the centre.

Dial Wood Carriage Driving For The Disabled Org Details: Enabling people with disabilities to carriage

drive & spend time with ponies, Dial Wood provides benefits to their clients’ health & well-being, as well as helping them to achieve personal goals.

Roles: Carriage Driving Helpers –Accompanying users on carriage rides, & providing assistance where necessary.

Fundraisers – Helping with organisation, income & promotion. Stable Yard Helpers – Cleaning stables & caring for the ponies. Volunteer Co-ordinators – Working with the organisations

numerous volunteers, recruiting new volunteers & providing basic training.

Support: Induction training & travel expenses provided. Also offer volunteer qualifications.

Location: Flockton

Other: Ideally suited to those who love working with animals. DBS check required.

Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice Org Details: Supporting life-limited children, young people, & their families.

They offer nursing care, practical help & emotional support to families at their purpose built hospice at Brackenhall to give a wide range of care, therapies, & play activities.

Roles: Event Assistants – To attend & help out at fundraising events throughout the year. Retail Assistants – To sort donated stock & help serve customers in their numerous charity shops. Volunteer Drivers – To transport clients to & from the hospice.

Support: Induction training & travel expenses provided.

Commitment: Weekdays & Saturday daytime

Location: Kirklees

Friend To Friend Org Details: A local charity offering a range of activities for older people

including: arm chair exercise, mobility & walking groups, monthly meals, a men’s group, arts & crafts, local history, & monthly get togethers.

Roles: Activity Group Helper – Assisting with a range of tasks including: food preparation & cooking, serving & washing up, setting up tables & chairs, as well as arts & crafts sessions.

Activity Group Leader – Providing a range of activities for groups of older people ranging from arts & crafts, to quizzes & speakers. Will be responsible for keeping a register & collecting member fees.

Driver – Required to provide transport (using their own cars) for social activities & outings at least once a month. Mini bus driver also required (MIDAS licence required).

Fundraisers – Helping with a variety of fundraising activities including events, corporate fundraising, & grant applications.

Helper – Accompanying & supporting members whilst on outings, usually twice a month.

Transport Organiser – Co-ordinating transport (mini bus & taxis) to enable members to participate in group activities & outings. Can be worked from home if desired.

Trustee Board Member – Attending a bi monthly board meeting, helping bring fresh ideas and enthusiasm to the organisation. Meeting are usually held on Monday evenings, five or six times a year.

Volunteer Group Leader – Leading a group of older people & volunteers by providing a variety of activities, keeping a register, & collecting member fees. Must be able to offer support to those with additional needs, i.e. hearing impairment, learning disabilities.

Support: Travel expenses can be provided for all roles, meal for some. Induction training available for all roles, with additional training on offer relevant to role description

Location: Holmfirth & Netherton

Fusion Housing Org Details: Providing a wide range of support

about homelessness & housing issues. They give specialist housing advice, learning support, and have a recycled furniture scheme, as well as helping people with legal housing issues, homelessness, housing arrears, disrepair issues, debt advice in possession proceedings and representation in court.

Roles: Administrator – Duties include: filing, photocopying, emailing, handling post & telephone calls, as well as helping with displays.

Course Support – Helping & encouraging individuals to attend the organisation’s various courses, by providing info & support.

Support: Induction training provided. Travel & meal expenses available to those who volunteer for more than five hours.

Location: Kirklees

Other: Three-month commitment required for Administrator role.

Groundwork Trust Org Details: Helping young people (ages 16–24) by giving support on

expectations at work, career choices and the next steps to accessing employment.

Roles: Green For Go Project Volunteers – helping the Project Leader to encourage people with learning difficulties, mental health problems, and physical disabilities to learn new skills, make new friends, & gain confidence through a range of outdoor activities. Volunteers will help prepare activities and offer one-to-one & group support to participants as they take part.

Support: Some travel and meal expenses provided. Induction training available

Commitment: Monday & Thursday daytime Location: Huddersfield

Heavy Woollen District Scouts Org Details: Delivering fun, friendship, adventure, and opportunities for over

400,000 young people across the UK.

Roles: Scouting Volunteers – Required for numerous groups including Beavers, Cubs, Scouts & Explorers. Duties include planning and running a programme of activities.

Support: Informal, and nationally recognised training is provided to all volunteers, including Safeguarding, & Scout Leaders qualifications

Commitment: Weekday evenings / Weekend mornings

Location: Groups are held in Batley, Birstall, Dewsbury, Heckmondwike, Mirfield, & Roberttown

Other: DBS check required

Hollybank Trust Org Details: Meets the needs of children and adults with complex disabilities,

but aims to reach beyond meeting purely physical needs to nurture, develop and enrich lives.

Roles: Fundraisers – To represent the Trust & assist with event organisation, bucket collections, distribution of promotional leaflets, & the recruitment of more volunteers.

Holme Valley Gardening Network Org Details: A community gardening project offering various practical

opportunities in learning how to grow food locally, compost home waste and support individuals developing a deeper understanding of nature.

Roles: Gardening & Cooking Volunteers – To help with harvesting & cooking, & planning menus in relation to seasonal cycles. Gardening Arts & Crafts Volunteers – To run activities such as willow weaving, printing & ceramics. Horticulture Volunteers – To learn basic soil management, propagation, as well as sowing & planting techniques.

Support: On the job training & other training may be accessed, relevant to the role.

Location: Holme Valley

Other: A willingness to work outdoors and to learn is crucial

Home-Start Kirklees Org Details: Home-Start offers support, friendship and practical help to

families with at least one child under the age of five. They need dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers who are preferably parents themselves and know how valuable support can be.

Roles: Home Visitor - Volunteers are matched with a family with whom they visit once a week to provide practical & emotional support.

Friend of Home-Start – To help raise funds for the charity. Trustees – to attend board meetings & help lead the group.

Support: Full training is provided. Travel & other out of pocket expenses are paid.

Commitment: Minimum commitment for Home Visitors ideally 12 months. Trustee committee meets once every six weeks.

Location: Dalton & across Kirklees

19th Huddersfield Golcar Guides Org Details: A membership-led organisation that

provides a girl-only space for their guides, that is free from the pressure of a mixed gender setting.

Roles: Guide Assistants - To provide help & support at meetings every Wednesday night for an hour & a half.

Support: Induction training provided, but do not cover any expenses

Commitment: Wednesday evenings

Location: Golcar

Huddersfield Ramsden Division Guides Org Details: Providing social activities & events for over 700 members of Girl

Guiding UK in the area.

Roles: Volunteer Leader – An excellent opportunity for individuals to help out, and gain experience with children & young people.

Support: Ongoing mentoring & one-to-one support available.

Location: Kirklees

Other: DBS check required

Org Details: The National Citizen Service programme is a new Government initiative for 16-18 year olds, which encourages young people to work in socially mixed teams to develop a range of cultural, practical & co-operative life skills. Over the summer, teams will take part in residential visits, group challenges & social action events within their community, encouraging participants to take responsibility for important decisions.
