Want to Impact Kids? Join the Volunteer Ranks for our "Super School News" program Join the volunteers for "Super School News" (www.rmpbs.org/ssn) and make a difference in a child’s life. This education-based program is the oldest, continuously running production of Rocky Mountain PBS. For over 30 years, volunteers have made it possible for 5th and 6th graders to produce 2-minute news broadcasts about their schools which appear on the air. This program introduces children to the world of broadcast news and, as a result, some of the "Super School News" alumni have gone on to careers in journalism and broadcast.

Volunteers will be assigned a school and work with a teacher and student team (1-2 coaching sessions at the school) to design their broadcast. Volunteer training is provided. In addition, volunteers will assist with assembling information (1 morning in August and December), orientation day (1 morning in September and January) and will attend the taping session at the Denver station.

We hope you will help sustain this legacy program. If you are interested in volunteering, please email [email protected] or Susan [email protected].

Generally, our tours last approximately an hour. You don’t have to be an expert. Just bring your smile and laughter with you. Tour guides are some of the best goodwill ambassadors that we have.

Rocky Mountain PBS is committed to our public and that means that we welcome the public into our station more than any other TV station in town. We need your help. If this sounds like something you would enjoy, please contact Susan Barber [email protected] and we will have some fun!

President Trump’s Budget Calls for Elimination of Funding for Public Media: What You Can Do The first draft of President Trump’s budget zeros out funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Rocky Mountain Public Media currently receives 11% (or $1.75 million) of our annual budget in federal funds from CPB and most of that is forward-funded two years. We use this money primarily to offset the expense of providing an over-the-air signal to 98% of Colorado households many of whom can’t afford cable or satellite television.

Funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which makes investments in public television as well as radio, is .01 percent of the federal budget. That is a very small investment for a resource that benefits all of Colorado.

In the coming weeks and months, we will tap into our vast network of committed volunteers, listeners, viewers and visitors to keep you informed about this issue. We will use our digital distribution networks to share messages that reinforce the impact public media has in Colorado and around the country. We will ask our partners and members to stand beside us to preserve public media because the work we do is truly vital to the civic fabric of our communities.

Volunteers may want to sign up with Protect My Public Media (www.protectmypublicmedia.org) to receive legislative updates and information about actions they might take to preserve and support public media. Additionally, are encouraged to visit www.rmpbs.org/valuepbs to understand more about the importance of public media and learn about talking points and action plans.

Thank you in advance for your energetic commitment to KUVO, Rocky Mountain PBS and all public media!

Volunteer Profile: Renee Bedard I have been volunteering with SAM (Station’s Archived Memories) at RMPBS since March of 2014. I began with an interest in archives and what it would be like to work in one. After meeting with Pat Hoeft and realizing the purposes of SAM I jumped right in with identifying and re-organizing photos from the 1956 station scrapbooks. Researching photos here has never been boring for me, especially when I came across the original Mrs. Bird costumes! Since then I have done research on and accessioned photos for all kinds of programs, events, and people for what was then KRMA-TV and solidified my passion for working in archives. This past winter I applied and was accepted to the University of Denver’s Masters of Library and Information Science program where I will specialize in archival work. I can’t wait to begin school and the path towards what I know will be a fulfilling and exciting career. I couldn’t have done it without SAM and all the wonderful volunteers who support these projects. Archiving is important work and I am grateful I get to do it with the people here at RMPBS.

Thanks to Renee for all she has done! If you are interested in volunteering for SAM, contact Susan Barber at [email protected].

In Memoriam: Willi Jost By Laura Sampson It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the passing on March 1, 2017, of our dear friend and volunteer leader, Willi Jost. Willi was born in 1941 in Blue Rapids, Kansas and grew up in Rose Hill, Kansas in a loving family of eight siblings.

After obtaining her liberal arts degree from Pittsburg State University, Willi moved to Denver in 1963. She later continued her education at the University of Colorado receiving a master’s degree in library media.

Willi and her husband, Dennis, were married in 1971 and spent many years volunteering together on numerous activities at Rocky Mountain PBS. Willi got her start as a RMPBS volunteer in the spring of 1974, when Willi was asked by a volunteer mom at her elementary school (Carol Stillwagon) if she’d be interested in volunteering for the Channel Six Auction in “Pick Up and Pay” for just ONE shift. M-hmmm.

For the span of four decades following her first Auction shift, Willi continued to teach elementary school fulltime while volunteering annually up to 2 weeks each spring for the Channel Six televised Auction. She served as an Auction volunteer in numerous capacities including Confirmation Chair, Troubleshooter, Clerical Chair, Scribe Chair, Studio Assistant, Big Board Chair, Auction Marketing Chair and ultimately, Studio Chair. Whether there were nametag buttons to be made or food to be prepared for a station event, Willi was there to lend a hand.

For two years (1992 and 1993), Willi and Dennis co-chaired the Channel Six “Beer Booths” at the Cherry Creek Arts Festivals with fellow volunteers, Barb and Roger Johnson. When being interviewed for Station’s Archived Memories in 2008, Willi smiled as she recalled her days at the Cherry Creek Arts Festival saying, “Barbara Johnson and my job was to go around to the beer booths and pick up the money. You know that a lot of money accumulated at any one time in the booths. We had a little red wagon that we pulled around, loaded with money, through the crowds. We did have a Denver Police person with us at all times.”

Willi volunteered for Station’s Archived Memories (SAM) from 2002-2007 co-chairing the Photo committee. Her fellow archive volunteers greatly appreciated her librarian and organizational skills.

For two terms (2006 and 2007), Willi served as the Volunteer Board President after retiring from a long teaching career. She said that her personal objective as President of the Board was to improve communications between staff and volunteers. In her usual quiet yet resolved way, Willi accomplished that goal. Throughout her RMPBS volunteer years, Willi developed close friendships with both RMPBS staff and volunteers.

Personally, I will miss Willi tremendously as a very dear friend and “life mentor.” She was always there when needed, was always generous with her heart and hugs and impacted the lives of all that were fortunate to have known her.

Willi‘s Rocky Mountain PBS family will remember her for her leadership, her quick wit and her endless willingness to offer her help in whatever ways were needed.

Tidbits of History About Rocky Mountain PBS By Laura Sampson | Founder | Station’s Archived

Memories EMAIL ARRIVED @ ROCKY MOUNTAIN PBS IN APRIL 1995

None of us can begin to imagine our busy lives without email and voicemail as two of our most regularly used communication tools that we take for granted in today’s world.

On April 21, 1995 (22 years ago), James Morgese, the Channel Six General Manager, announced through a Channel Six Memorandum that the station was introducing email and voicemail to the Channel Six internal operations.

James’ memorandum stated: “The station has gained a tremendously useful tool in order to increase productivity and decrease cost.”

A BRIEF HISTORY OF EMAIL excerpted from https://phrasee.co/a-brief-history-of-email

Email is the most important and widely used communications medium on the internet. The medium’s roots can be traced back to the very infancy of the internet, and beyond…

The first example of email can be found on computers at MIT in a program called “MAILBOX,” all the way back to 1965.

Users of MIT computers could leave messages with this program on computers at the university for other users, who would see the messages the next time they logged on to the computer. The system was quite effective, but only if the people wishing to communicate with each other were regularly using the same computer.

In 1969, the US Department of Defense implemented ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), a network connecting numerous computers across the department for the purpose of communication within the organization.

On October 29th 1969, the first message was sent from computer to computer on ARPANET. It was 1971 when Ray Tomlinson invented and developed electronic mail, as we know it today, by creating ARPANET’s networked email system.

With the advent of internal networks the protocols for sending messages became more complex. When sending a message from one computer to another within a network, how would one indicate where the message was intended to go? Ray Tomlinson had the answer: The “@” symbol, which was probably his most enduring contribution to the internet. Indicating a destination for a message became as simple as addressing it: “username@name of computer,” which is essentially how email has been addressed ever since.

By the 1980’s, the infancy of the internet, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) had begun connecting people across the world, and email “hosting” sites began to pop up, clamoring for their piece of the pie. By 1993 the word “electronic mail” had been replaced by “email” in the public lexicon. Over the next few years, America Online (AOL), Echomail, Hotmail and Yahoo shaped the internet and email landscape.

By the turn of the millennium, having an email “address” had gone from being a luxury/curiosity to being a societal expectation akin to having a phone number. The age of email had begun in earnest. Volunteer Appreciation - Thank You for Your Support! Thanks to Volunteers in Denver at KUVO and RMPBS The Rocky Mountain PBS Major Giving staff greatly appreciates Donna Shelley, Ellyn Crago and Pamela Herrlein for their help with the Spring mailing to our donors. Mike Cawthra, Kaz Hellickson, Jocelyn Miller and Dorsy Hill at the front desk also helped! Every envelope they send out has the potential to raise more support for our mission!

Staff member Shawn Jones wants to thank both Betty Flaten and Sharon Powers for their hard work at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema / PBS KIDS Screening on March 22nd. Betty and Sharon helped set-up the PBS KIDS booth, interfaced with parents and kids, and effectively managed a few logistical difficulties along the way. We really appreciate their hard and dedicated work!

A big thank you to photographer Robert Mercer for joining us on Feb. 28 for the Leadership Transition Celebration and taking photos. It was an exciting evening for RMPM as we said thanks to Doug Price and Harris Ravine for their passion and hard work over the years and welcomed Amanda Mountain as our fearless leader. We appreciate Robert’s help in capturing lasting memories of this important day. On top on being a great photographer, Robert is fun to talk to! Thank you, Robert.
