Purchase Supplies! While we do provide costumes for all of our dancers, students must provide their own tights and slippers for the performance (girls: pink tights and pink ballet slippers; boys: black tights and black ballet slippers). Please make sure that the tights and shoes are clean and intact (i.e. no rips or holes in tights). All dancers must have their hair in a neat ballet bun with no woven bun-covers, clips, or bows. Hair-colored hairnets MUST be worn, and hairspray or gel is strongly recommended. Stage make-up also MUST be worn. If you have any questions about hair and make-up, please attend our Stage Make-up and Hair Demonstration on Friday, May 9th, at 6:15 p.m. in Room 202.

Notice Call Times! Please refer to the Spring Showcase Important

Information handout that has been emailed to all families and made available in the SDCYB office. Your dancer will have a CALL TIME (the time he or she must arrive at the theater) for both the dress rehearsal and the performance. It is VERY IMPORTANT that your dancer arrives at the theater at these listed call times with his/her hair and make-up already completed. Parents will NOT be allowed backstage to help their dancers get ready, so please finish hair and make-up before arriving at the theater.

As we approach Spring Showcase 2014, we want to ensure that everyone is prepared for the performances. Below are a few important details for parents to keep in mind as we get closer to May 17th!

Purchase Tickets! Tickets are ON SALE NOW, and can be purchased either in our office or online (www.sdcyb.org). There is assigned seating and last year's shows SOLD OUT, so please purchase tickets EARLY to guarantee seats. All tickets are $10.00, and there are NO REFUNDS, CREDITS, OR EXCHANGES, even for accidental purchases made for the incorrect show time, so please check carefully if your child is in the 2pm or 6pm show before making your purchase.

Volunteer! All families with a participating dancer must fulfill 1 volunteer shift. If you do not sign-up for a shift, you will be assigned to a shift. If for any reason you do not fulfill your required volunteer shift, you will be fined a minimum of $50.00, and your child’s participation in future productions may be jeopardized. Families may sign up for a volunteer shift by visiting our volunteer page at www.signupgenius.com. All questions regarding volunteering can be directed to our Volunteer Coordinator, Maggie Walters, at [email protected].

As many of you know, I will be having a baby girl in early June, which my family and I are so excited about! First I want to thank you for your incredible support and kindness throughout my pregnancy. It has been so nice chatting with many of you about your own experiences with pregnancy, babies, etc., and it has helped make these past few months much more enjoyable :). I wanted to let everyone know my plans for maternity leave so that you all have an idea what will be going on this summer. I will work until the end of May, and I will have substitute teachers for the final two weeks of the Spring Semester. I will return to teach most of my classes towards the end of July, and will once again have substitutes for the weeks that I am gone. We are doing our best to have consistent substitutes from week to week, so that the dancers do not have a different teacher each week. I will not be teaching Saturdays until September. During my leave, I will be sporadically checking email, so please feel free to contact me with questions. If you need immediate assistance, I would recommend contacting the office, as they will most likely get back to you more quickly :). Once again, thank you all so much for your support. I look forward to introducing you to my daughter soon! - Danika

At SDCYB, we know that a dancer’s training doesn't end with the last day of the Spring semester. That's why we have worked hard to implement effective summer training programs that work for a variety of our dancers. From day camps to intensives, we offer summer programs designed to enhance the previous training of our veteran dancers and introduce new students to the discipline of ballet. Here is a preview of what to expect this summer!

Half-Day Ballet Camps

Camp A (Ages 4 to 6) June 30 July 3: 9a-12p August 11-15: 9a-12p

August 18-22: 9a-12p & 1-4p

Camp B (Ages 7 to 10)

June 30 July 3: 1p-4p

Camp consists of a daily ballet class combined with other activities such as arts & crafts, jazz classes, performance rehearsals, and field trips to other cultural institutions in the park. Each week of camp culminates in an in-studio performance where families are invited to see what students have learned.

Intermediate Intensive

SDCYB Levels 2A, 2B & 3A July 28-August 8: 9a-2p

This two-week, full-day program combines daily ballet technique classes with classes and seminars in modern, jazz, musical theater, character, choreography, Pilates, and music appreciation. Viewing and discussion of classical ballet videos, and excursions to other cultural institutions in Balboa Park, are also integrated into our program, which cu lm i na t e s i n an i n - s tud i o performance for family and friends.

Advanced Intensive

SDCYB Levels 3B, 4, 5 & 6 July 7-July 25: 9a-3p

This three-week, full-day program combines daily ballet technique classes, with classes in pointe, modern, jazz, musical theater, character, choreography, variations, Pilates, injury prevention, nutrition, and music appreciation from an impressive roster of guest faculty. Once a semester, SDCYB holds Parent Observation Week, a week during which parents are invited to watch their dancer’s ballet classes. This is a great time to see the progress that your dancer has made over the first few months of the semester, and we hope you will join us in our studios this month. Parent Observation Week for the Spring Semester will be held Monday, May 19th through Saturday, May 24th. During this week, you are welcome to observe any of your dancer’s classes. If you choose to attend one of your danc-er’s classes, please make sure to observe quietly. This means turning off cell phones, securing child care for any younger siblings who may cause a dis-traction to the class, and refraining from talking with other parent observers. Also, please avoid going in and out of the room during class as much as possi-ble. If you have any questions about Parent Observation Week, please stop by the office, where we are more than happy to assist you.
