We have been asking a question each Sunday as we go through the series ‘Not a Fan.’ That question has been: Are you a fan or a follower? All church goers would naturally

respond to that question with a resounding “a follower of course!” So it is my prayer that as we have journeyed through this series we have without a doubt affirmed in our faith and confirmed in our commitment to be true followers. But how many of us have discovered that throughout our walk with Christ it has looked more like a fan?

Our lives may have felt like a follower, it may have looked like a follower, but in reality, we have like most people associated our Christian credentials, practices and knowledge as evidence of being a follower. But what separates us? What mark distinguishes you and me from a fan? Do we determine that by focusing more on the outside than we do the inside? Do we say we have Jesus as number one in our lives when in fact everything else gets in the way of that?

We looked at the DTR talk Jesus had with Nicodemus (John 3), with Simon the Pharisee (Luke 7), and the large crowds in (Luke 14). Jesus had many encounters with individuals and groupings that would soon discover in that moment of time they were nothing more than a fan. Some ran, some hide, some argued, some denied, and some changed. Jesus was brutally honest with each person so there would be no denying that He told them that to be a follower it was going to cost them. It may cost them their jobs, their money, their friends, their families, and even their own lives. If following Jesus cost you everything, would it still be worth it?

Saved to Serve, Tim

Several weeks ago I was watching the Houston Texans play the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL playoffs. I’ve developed into

somewhat of a Texans fan the last couple of years, and found myself quite disappointed when they couldn’t come up with

the win late in the game. To be honest, I didn’t expect them to win even though I still held out hope. But I still found

myself disappointed when their loss came to pass. The next day I was watching the San Francisco 49ers play the New

York Giants. I grew up a 49ers fan, but have lost interest in them the last 8 years or so. Seeing them succeed was like

reliving old glories, and I found my heart aching for a win. But, alas, this too did not take place and I found myself

disappointed. I had no great expectations for the 49ers that year, so I certainly didn’t expect them to make it to the Super

Bowl, but I found myself disappointed none-the-less.

I’ve noticed this same feeling as a father. I certainly hope that my children will be amazingly obedient and well behaved,

but there are these moments when I’m disappointed. I’m also realistic, and I recognize there will probably be those

moments where I am more than disappointed, angry or bitter even, but so far I mainly just experience disappointment. I

imagine my wife feels this way towards me sometimes (I don’t really have to imagine, sometimes she tells me so).

I’m thinking about all this because I’ve been reading through the end of Matthew recently. For whatever reason, I can’t

help but feel disappointment as I watch Jesus go through scene after scene of people choosing to not do what is right, even

though they are aware of the right thing they ought to do. I imagine a sad disappointment comes over Jesus as he explains

to Peter that he will have failed three times in the next few hours. He’s not angry or bitter towards Peter, just disappointed

because he had hoped for more. Jesus must have been disappointed with the crowds, as he hears them call out for a

murderer over himself. He had every right to be angry, every right to be bitter, and every right to seek vindication. But he

quietly stood, silent; disappointed.

I know that I disappoint. I disappoint my wife, my children, but more importantly my God. How great it is to know that he

forgives and restores, just as he did for Peter.

Thank you, Lord, for giving me, a sinner, a second chance and more.

Grace and Peace ~ Ben

Thank you from South Bend Medical Foundation, Blood Donor Services for hosting blood

drives in 2011 to save local lives. The generosity of your donors enabled us to maintain

a safe blood inventory throughout 2011. Your organization donated 111 units of blood

during 2011 impacting 333 lives.

Only seventeen businesses donated over 100 units of blood to our inventory. We salute

North Liberty Church of Christ as part of that elite group. Please display this small token

of our appreciation in a prominent spot so your staff and members recognize your

contribution.

Thank you again for your support of local blood donation and we look forward to our

ongoing partnership. SOUTH BEND MEDICAL FOUNDATION ~ 530 North Lafayette Boulevard • South Bead, IN 46601
