Volunteer Canada and Inves- tors Group’s Volunteer Recognion Study indicates that most volunteers prefer a genuine thank you for their efforts. Sincere words that highlight the impact of a vol- unteer’s contribuons or simple personalized tokens are meaningful and appreciated. Since the Tea House is only 3 blocks away the group proceeded on foot. Kelsey Trail employ- ees were concerned for the residents and volunteers since it was raining quite heavily. A suggeson to cancel the trip was made, but the residents were so eager to go and so were the faithful volun- teers. It was at this me one of the residents proclaimed “ We are not made of sugar!” As they all walked in their train line numerous ohhs and awes were heard from the residents as they walked past all the beauful fall colors on the trees. The volun- teers helped the residents by allowing them to see the beauty of the outdoors, rain or shine the residents didn’t care about the pouring rain, they were too busy enjoying the views and laughing at the hats that were being blown away. “I am 101 years old and I am walking in the rain… and I am loving every minute of it!” This adventure to the Tea House is sll a hot topic of discussion today and could not have been successful without our dedicated volunteers. VOLUNTEERING BUILDS

COMMUNITIES: When you

volunteer, you improve the life of your own community, by strengthening community ties. Feeling connected to your com-munity can also play a key role in how healthy you feel.

There are two ways of spreading light - to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.

-Edith Wharton, Vesalius in Zante

Page 3: VOLUNTEER ADVANTAGE NEWSLETTER - Kelsey Trail Health€¦ · your life exploration. 2. It’s a chance to try something you’ve never done before. Trying new things, meeting new

Did you know? 12.7 million volunteers contribute close to 2 billion hours annually. Imagine what your community would look like if without their contribution. Volunteers help improve quality of life for others, but giving back also comes with it’s own remarkable benefits for volunteers as well!

5 amazing reasons why you should start volunteering today:

1. It opens your eyes to new possibilities. Your eureka moment could be just a volunteer opportunity away! Successful volunteering relies on large networks of dedi-cated and open-minded people– and where there are people, you’ll find information, resources, and opportunity! So if you’re looking to broaden your horizons and open yourself up to new and exciting prospects, make volunteering part of your life exploration.

2. It’s a chance to try something you’ve never done before. Trying new things, meeting new and interesting people, going to new places- many times volunteering is the starting point of new life experiences. And when it’s free, giving back is one of the most accessible ways to start a new chapter in your life story today!

3. It’s your opportunity to leave your mark on the world and make a difference. Contrary to popular belief, one person can make a difference—and every time you volunteer your time you make a state-ment about what you believe in. Sharing your passion with the world has the ability to impact your community in big and small ways—most importantly opening up the opportunity to inspire others to do the same.

4. It’s a safe and strategic way to test new career paths and strengthen skills. Unsure if you want to pursue a new career? Interested in refining old skills and/or ac-quiring new ones? Volunteering is a popular and successful way to experiment and learn no matter what your age or ability. The best part? As you volunteer, you are also helping organizations and communities benefit at the same time!

5. It’s a fun way to save money – volunteering is less expensive than most recrea-tional/entertainment activities, but it’s just as fun and, as an added bonus, also ful-filling! Giving back is a great way to have fun in your community while making life-long friends at the same time!

We are looking for volunteer drivers to provide transportation to clients, patients and residents to medical appoint-ments throughout the Kelsey Trail Health Region. If you are interested in giving a little of your time each month, please let us know! For more information contact Jessica Kwochka.
