Official Publication for Members of the Golden Hills Mustang Club Established 1982 JUNE & JULY 2016 VOLUME XXXIV, 6 & 7 2016 High Five Tour Our club’s part of the 2016 High Five Tour is over for now. This was the 7 th year for Golden Hill Mustang Club’s involvement with Wounded Warriors Family Support. We are proud to say that our club members have played a role in helping combat wounded soldiers and their families have a better life. WWFS aids veterans and their families in healing the wounds that medicine cannot. WWFS is one of the top rated military charities and is NOT affiliated with Wounded Warrior Project! In 2015 we drove a Ford Explorer and an F-150 Supercrew, both handicap equipped. Both of those were given to wounded soldiers and their families along with 48 other specially fitted trucks or SUV’s. So far, 50 families have had their lives improved by these vehicles, because of the generosity and support of people from all over the USA, including the Golden Hills Mustang Club! This year marked the return of the Mustang, not just any Mustang but a 2016 Shelby GT 350 wrapped in the Red, White, & Blue Stars & Stripes. Our mission is the same, helping Military families in many ways including the donation of handicap equipped Ford vehicles. We would like to thank those members who participated in this year’s tour and helped to make this year our most successful effort yet. This year’s drivers Terry Burke, Bill Davis, Dan McCabe, Kirk Stafford, and Craig Beckley took the 2016 Shelby GT500 to all the planned stops in our Northern California schedule, plus a few other non-planned stops where it received a hearty welcome. Craig Beckley and Laura Morandi (a new driver from the East coast) drove the Shelby all the way from Placerville to Omaha Nebraska! Greg Stevenson will be driving an Eastern leg of the tour next month. Volunteers Tony McGrath, Andrew Dagenet were a big help at most of our events and we want to thank all the others, too numerous to mention here, who helped with parking, set-up and security while the car was on display. Also, a Big Thanks to Peter & Lisa Mitsopoulos who provided their Pop -up shade tent at Jelly Belly! Once again, we are very grateful and proud of the support that our club has given to this wonderful organization. (continued on pg.7 )

Hello Mustang Family, We recently participated in The High Five

Tour. The theme this year is “Mobility is Freedom”. Check out the

article and photos in this edition of our newsletter.

We camped at Lake Francis near the town of Dobbins, CA from June

23 – 26. Watch this month’s newsletter for the story and pictures. Please let us know early if

you would like to join us next year. It is always a fun event!

Please bring canned food for our ongoing club food drive to benefit the Vacaville area food

banks.

Please do not consume alcohol during the general meetings. We adopted this rule a long time

ago as we all drive to the meetings and some bring their young children.

Please bring a raffle prize to the general meeting. As always, bring something new and most

anything will work. This helps to boost our scholarship fund. Thanks to all who donated last

month!

Check the calendar of events section of this

newsletter for any added events.

See you out on the trail.-Tim Leathers

MUSTANG TRIVIAL PURSUIT GAME

Submit a mustang related trivia question.

Your question will be posted in the newsletter and answers will be collected at the next

general meeting.

This month’s question is submitted by Ileine Burke :

What year was the CD player an option?

May 2016 - The Coveted “HA” Award

It was my first year of being the registrar for our 32nd Annual Biggest Little Car Show. I collected registration money, kept track of it all on a spreadsheet as it was received. This

spreadsheet was the file to be used for a “mail merge” when it was time to send out the confirmation letters. “This will be easy” I thought to myself as I prepared to send out those confirmations. Not as easy as I thought it would be. Our internet was not working properly, which meant no WiFi and no communication between computer and printer. I finally got fed up, called AT&T, and got the problem solved. I did the mail merge, printed those confirmations and thought “all done”! Then I noticed some confirmations didn’t come out right….great. I thought I had gotten them all fixed, but no, I missed one (that I know of). Richard Hohas, Entry #8. He has a 1964 ½ convertible mustang. I listed it as a 1947 mustang!! I had to re-do some of the confirmations on the mail merge, as some weren’t merging properly. One of them being Richard’s. The year didn’t merge right and I had 1947 on a couple confirmations, including the right one. So I re-printed them a 3rd time, looked them over and all looked good, but I had missed Richard’s, which is the reason I was presented with this award.

Thank you to Norma McCabe for being a wonderful advisor! I couldn’t have done it without your help! -Kathy Loya

June 2016

Those of you that attended the June general meeting already know the reason I received the HA Award. Those of you that didn’t missed all the stories so I’ll clue you in on all the details. When nominations for the HA award were called I nominated Danny Cordeiro for running over the sign marking the row he was going to park in on Friday morning at the Reno MCA National. Danny defended his assault on the sign saying the parking person guided him over the sign. When asked for any more nominations I again nominated Danny for being chased down by the Parking supervisor the next day on Saturday morning at the MCA National in Reno for cutting through one of the blocked off entrances. Danny defended his wayward entry saying he was just following someone else and the proper marked entrance had too long of a line. Yes, I nominated Danny for not one but two car related incidents. Once more nominations were called for and Danny made good on his promise to nominate me if I nominated him. Danny nominated me for walking into the Ladies room after the awards ceremony at the Reno MCA National, an act that in no way involved a car. In my defense, I was simply following my boss one of the MCA Assistant National Head judges and I never actually entered the Ladies room itself. I did pass through the first open entry but noticed my mistake prior to passing through the second doorway into the actual Ladies room.

Apparently the club felt that my one non car related incident was more entertaining than Danny’s two car related incidents and I received the HA Award. -Robin Paulsell

We couldn't have asked for a better day! Napa Ford held their

annual car display and BBQ on June 18th. We had about 35 cars in

attendance and 4 car clubs participating. The charity supported this

year was the Napa Food Bank. If you brought non-perishable food or

donated cash to the food

bank, you and your

family each received a raffle ticket. There were some great prizes to be won, everything

from camping gear to Skull Candy head phones to wine to $100 cash! The lucky

recipient of the $100 cash was Terry Burke! We all had a wonderful free catered BBQ

lunch as well. Dan McCabe presented Kevin Massie, President of Napa Ford, with a club

t-shirt and club appreciation plaque. If you have never participated in this annual event,

make sure you put it on your calendar for next year.

On June 23rd 14 Trailers, Motorhome's, Tent's and Cabin holders took off for a great weekend to Lake Francis. On the 24th we were joined by 3 other groups for a total of 17 camping sites filled with GHMC and NVC members. A total of 51 adults and children all together. Thursday night was appetizer night, with more yummy

finger foods then everyone could eat..

On Friday many went down to the lake for a day of water and sun. We held our potluck dinner on Friday night. What a feast we had. After dinner and a trip to the ice cream parlor was taken by Kirk and Cheryl and many of the kids, (Big and small). When they all returned it was time for the

Piñata. One by one they lined up to pull the strings to release the goodies inside, it was Connor or Vincent that pulled the right one to have the candy come spilling out all over. As they dug through all the prizes and candy to pick

out what they wanted, I think the kids were set for the night. Many thanks to Terry Burke for leading in our flag cere-mony and the Burke family for folding the flag. it's always gives me a heavy heart when we do these events.

Saturday was the treasure hunt, thank you President Tim for doing this for the kids, they love it each year and we have to keep with tradition. Mike and I had a wedding to go to that day and were not able to attend this days events. But we were told everyone had a great time and spent another day at the lake and a evening trip for ice cream. I would like to thank everyone that helped make this a fun campout, I truly hope everyone had a good time.

Benicia Torchlight

Parade - July 3rd

By Dan Cordeiro

It was a lovely, cool Sunday evening

in Benicia - a perfect evening for a

parade. We all gathered at the

Southampton shopping center and caravanned on over to

the end of First Street to begin the Parade. As usual,

our convertibles started the parade with the

dignitaries. We were represented by Larry Tunac, Terry

Scott, Tim Bates and Brian Evans. This group was

followed by Kirk and Dan’s Powercars and eight fellow

GHMC Mustangers.

A f t e r w a r d s ,

mostly all of us

went to Gracie’s where we sat outside in the patio

area. The service was good this year and we also had

some entertainment for dinner.

Thanks again for all of the Convertibles that stepped

up to make this all come together.

On Saturday, July 16, 2016 the 7th Annual Dixon Grillin & Chillin Car/Truck Show on the streets of downtown Dixon took place. The show was open to all pre-1974 vehicles. We met Bill Stephen-son at Ron DuPratt Ford at 1760 N. Lincoln, Dixon at 6am. We wanted to arrive early so we could get good parking spots. We parked behind First Northern Bank in a parking lot with a lot of shade. Since the weather was a little milder, it was a very nice,

comfortable day. We went to breakfast at The A-Street Deli after our cars are parked and everyone was set up. The GHMC members who brought their cars to show were Yvonne Westberg, Louie Moore, Tammy and Mike Robinette, Ileine and Terry Burke and Cheryl and Kirk Stafford. We were also joined by many Napa Valley Cruiser members. There were over 290 vehicles registered at the show this year. Several members won raffle prizes. There were a lot of non-food as well as food vendors at the show. We enjoyed a nice Grillin and Chillin lunch paid for by meal coupons included in our regis-tration packets. Awards will be presented at 3pm. Brad Parsons, of the Napa Valley Cruisers, won the “Best Truck” award. His truck will be on next year’s t-shirt for the 8th Annual Dixon Grillin and Chillin. -Kirk

MAGIC OF THE MUSTANG

MCA National in Reno June 3-5, 2016 This year instead of Restomods in Reno, the Reno Mustang Car Club hosted the MCA National Magic of the Mustang at the Peppermill Resort and Casino. With the change to a 3 day show from a 2 day show most of us made the decision to go up the day before turning the trip into a 4 day weekend. Thursday was travel day for us, the McCabes, Cordeiros, Pezollos, Andris’, Rick Hohas, and Gary Cotton. The Wiederspahns came up on Friday to join in on the fun giving the club a total of 8 cars at the show including my 64½ and Paige’s 65 Coupes. In fact classic Mustangs were well represented in our group with the Cordeiro’s 64½

Convertible, Garry Cotton’s 64 ½ Convertible, the Pezzolo’s 66 Coupe, and the McCabe’s 69 Fastback. Late models were represented with the Wiederspahn’s 2014 Coupe and the Andris’s 2013 Coupe; unfortunately Risk Hohas had engine trouble earlier in the week and was forced to leave his car at home. We had East Bay Classics 48’ custom wrapped car hauler on display in the show grounds along with two 10X10 canopies which became home base for the club and a welcome respite from the near record temperatures over the weekend. Friday was day one of the car show, classification began and our group began cleaning their cars for the show. This was many of the club’s first time showing their cars at an MCA National, including Paige’s. The level of cleaning involved is incredible; many of the cars are in classes that include judging of their undercarriage. There was plenty to see and do between the vendors and all the nice cars coming in all day. To end the day most of us gathered at the Ruby River Steakhouse for dinner, we were joined by my friends Brenda Romero and Butch & Kathy Eckhoff. We celebrated Birthdays for Paige, Norma, and Kathy Eckhoff too! Saturday, day 2 of the show was “Judgment Day” (I mean judging day) and the pressure was on for everyone to have

their cars cleaned and ready by 12:00 noon. Paige, Brenda, and Kathy Eckhoff looked after our 3 cars (the Eckhoff’s have a gorgeous 66 Emberglow Coupe that was parked with us) while Butch and I (both certified MCA judges) went to work judging cars in other classes. One by one the cars were judged and the owners began relaxing. Paige, Brenda, and Renee Wiederspahn went to the pool to relax, some club members were there and others tried their luck in the casino. I took the opportunity to go photograph all the cars I judged and check out more of the awesome cars on display. They

had a poker walk where you collected cards at some of the vendors; the last card was collected at the hospitality room at the end of the day. There the Reno club had some finger food and some really cool items were auctioned off. They also had a Magician for entertainment and a no host bar for those interested in some libations. We left the party just after the magician to go hang out at the pool with the Wiederspahns and eat pizza. Sunday day three was much calmer, since all of the cars had been judged on Saturday most everyone was just hanging out till the awards ceremony at 1:00 PM. After the ceremony most loaded and headed for home, the McCabes, Weiderspahns, and Cordeiros stayed an extra day. Congratulations to all who received awards, MCA awards are earned not won and they all worked hard to earn them. This was a great trip and the folks with the Reno Mustang Club were great hosts. Next year Restomods in Reno will return and I can’t wait, make sure to put this event on your must do list! -Robin Paulsell
