American Legion Post 89 Swap Meet Show & Shine The American Legion Post 89, located at 4326 East Antioch Road in Springville, will hold a Swap Meet Show and Shine this Satur-day, July 6th. The event was originally scheduled to take place back in June, but it had to be postponed due to weather.Registration will be held from 10am to noon, blessing of the bikes will be at 1 p.m., people’s choice voting will run from noon to 1:30pm and winners will be announced at 2pm. The entry fee is $10 and there will be four classes that will include Custom, Dresser, Trike, and Vintage. 44th Annual Cottage Grove Free-dom Festival The 44th Annual Cot-tage Grove Freedom Festival is set for Thursday July 4th in Cottage Grove. The turkey/trap shoot will run from 9am to 1pm. At 10am the parade with prizes for best of parade, best float, and most patriotic will start. Grand Marshall for this year’s parade is Dan Paschall and the Color Guard will be presented by the Henry County Sheriff’s Office. At 10:30am game booths open, the Fire-house International Kitchen opens. New games include monster paint ball, there are plenty of outdoor concessions, a cake walk, fire truck photo shoot, children’s entertainment, and more. The Country Store opens at 11am with a dollar a spin for homemade, homegrown, and canned

farm goods. An auction will run from 1-2pm, a Karaoke Contest from 2-4pm, Bingo from 3-5pm, Live music and danc-ing and from 6-9pm. A corn hole tourna-ment will start at 6pm and the drawing for a shotgun, and 50/50 cash drawing is at 8:45pm. The night culminates with a fantastic fireworks show put on by the Cottage Grove Fire Department. Hands Free TN Law Several new laws are in effect including the new Hands Free Tennessee law, which makes it illegal for any driver to hold a cell phone or any mobile device with any part of their body. The law also prohibits the driver from writing, reading, or send-ing any text while driving; reaching for a cell phone or mobile device in a manner in which the driver is no longer seated; watch a video or movie on a cell phone or mobile device; and record or broad-cast video on a cell phone or mobile de-vice. The law is known as public chapter 412 and is an effort to reduce crashes and deaths from distracted driving in the Volunteer State. In 2018, there were over 24,600 crashes involving distracted drivers. Statistics show that there were 59 distracted driving cases in Henry County in 2018 and already 10 in 2019.Violations of the law will be a class C misdemeanor with a $50 fine on first and second offense. Third or higher offense or any that cause a crash will result in a $100 fine.
