Legends & Lessons:

Rabbeinu Yonah

A first cousin of the Ramban,

Rabbeinu Yonah was one of the illustrious Rishonim in Medieval

Spain. Despite his rabbinic upbringing, one of his rebbeim

led him into opposing the Rambam’s works vehemently.

We discuss this controversy and the aftermath for Rabbeinu

Yonah’s life and legacy. In that light, we learned the introduction

to his “Shaarei Teshuvah”, ‘Gates of Repentance’.

Women's Parsha Shiur: We Did Start the Fire:

The History of Avraham & the Future of Mankind

We revisited the well-

known stories of Avraham in the idol shop

and his exchange with Nimrod leading to the fiery furnace. In our

analysis for their deeper meaning, we came to an

appreciation of Avraham’s initial and concluding philosophy

about Hashem and what that meant for his

mission -the meaning of “lech-lecha”- and the purpose of the actions

we take every day.

Peshischa: Living with

Discomfort, Growing from the

Depths

Answering our question from

last week, Rav Henoch of Aleksander explained that

despite Avraham and Sarah’s success at converting others

through chesed, we never hear from them again because they couldn’t relate the Yitzchak’s din and gevurah. Rav Tzadok

explains that “lech” means that Avraham’s journey actually

included Terach’s upbringing; that it was his recognition of what’s bad that led him to do

good. And as Rav Tzadok extends the same concept- it’s

our existence in Galus that

precipitates our Geulah.
