Quilters By the Sea Page 2 November, 2007

Susan MacDonald showed us her beautiful appliquéd purple and white floral wall hanging. She made it during a class taught by

Jennie Rayment at “Quilting in the Pines” in Arizona.

Beth Shibley brought in two

quilts. First was a beautiful Slice

and Dice a la Robin Gallagher. She learned this

technique at Robin’s

workshop and the quilt is just lovely in florals.

Beth also told us she won the “white elephant” squares at the QBS retreat and when she sewed them together, she came up with

this festive Christmas

quilt!

Deb Cardinale showed a radiant quilt she aptly calls “Sunshine”. It is a Nancy Chong pattern done with

needle-turn appliqué. Nancy was a speaker for QBS a few

months ago and gave a wonderful workshop.

Rita Stoll showed a stunning batik Japanese Puzzle. (Look closely. How did she get these

blocks to fit together???) It was beautifully quilted by

Frances Moore.

Annette Morales brought in her wonderful, scrappy Bouillabaisse Quilt. She pieced it on a quilting

cruise to Mexico and it just sparkles.

Renata Wilson showed her gorgeous

Tennessee Waltz quilt. She made it for her

sister and hence, it is called, “Yolanda’s

Waltz.” Renata is just back from B.C.

Canada where she and her husband are building a home on an

island. Welcome back Renata!

Show ‘N Tell (aka, Shown ‘n Told!) Jana Rogers

You guys are the GREATEST. Not only did we have 25 fabulous quilts shown but we also had a huge number of Mystery Quilts from the QBS Retreat. You can see all of these quilts up close at www.photobucket.com. Sign in using “QBSPhotos”. The password is “quilting”. Click on October 2007 and double-click to enlarge. Thanks to all of you who brought in your quilts. Thanks also to Renata Wilson and Joanie Wolf who took such good notes for this column and to Kate Rupley and Deb Cardinale for preserving your work in their excellent photographs.

Patty Winters displayed a lovely autumn quilt she

made for her hairdresser. She

chose beautiful fall colors and used a

fish pattern designed and taught by Frances Moore at our QBS Workshop a few months back.

Ann Leibovitz calls her lovely wall

hanging “Circle of Leaves.” It has a

wonderful, delicate motif of autumn

leaves. It is a challenge quilt and features needle-turn

appliqué and extensive machine quilting.

Sandy Fields made this adorable Lady Bug quilt as a baby gift. She used a Courthouse Step

pattern.

Quilters By the Sea Page 3 November, 2007

Suzanne Heer brought in 2 quilts. The first is a sparkling Christmas quilt which she pieced from impossibly small pieces. Suzanne’s second quilt is a 9-Patch which was made from the scraps of the first Christmas quilt! She sashed them, added a border, and got two beautiful but very

different quilts for the price of one.

Good job, Suzanne!

Cindy Garcia displayed an amazing fabric portrait of Madonna she made for a friend. She learned this technique through a 5 week course she took over the internet. If you are interested, you can pursue it at www.quiltuniversity.com. Look for Realistic Fabric Portraits by Marilyn Belford. Note: registration begins 5 weeks before the class starts and the next class begins January 19. The cost is $46.00. Cindy said the key here is in using a value finder. Good job Cindy! What an interesting project.

Linda Castle brought in a beautiful Billie Lauder Mystery quilt she calls “Mistletoe Manor.” It features orange

and rust colored stars. She made it at the Two Wacky Women’s Retreat. We have a second picture of quilt art she included on the back. What a nice finish.

Terry Ayala showed a wonderful quilt she made from Robin Gallagher’s

Slice and Dice Workshop. Although the colors are

black, brown and tan, this quilt just glows.

Show ‘N Tell (aka, Shown ‘n Told!) - continued

Pat Blank brought in 3 pieces. She showed a quilt called “I’m Popeye the Santa Man”.

She made it for her son for Christmas and it is as cute as it can be. The pattern is Attic Windows and the fabric features characters from the cartoon strip. Pat also showed a beautiful table runner she calls “Autumn.” Take a closer look online and ask yourself this question: Just HOW did she DO that? Pat also displayed an adorable Halloween wall-hanging. She calls it “I want a TREAT!!”

Pat Adair brought in 3 pieces. First, she showed us a sparkling red and green Christmas quilt she calls H.I.S. Mystery Quilt. She pieced it at a class with Cathy Ferris and quilted it herself.

Pat also created a stunning autumn-colored Mariner’s Compass. She told us she learned the method in a 4-day class taught by

Judy Mathison up in Eureka, CA. This quilt is truly spectacular. Pat also brought in an adorable quilt she and some friends have made as a fund-raiser for Guide Dogs of America. She calls it “Dog’s Pajama Party.” The friends made the blocks and she

assembled them. Note the clever stars in the intersections of the sashing.

Joanie Wolf showed another beautiful

Slice and Dice from Robin Gallagher’s

workshop. This quilt just sparkles with dozens of unique Christmas motifs.

Quilters By the Sea Page 4 November, 2007

Show ‘N Tell (aka, Shown ‘n Told!) - continued Sonia Das brought in 3 quilts this time. The first is her beautiful

JoAnn’s Block of the Month for 2004. It is a sampler of traditional blocks which she completed during the retreat. Sonia also showed a really cute Halloween wall-hanging. She won this

kit at a QBS retreat and completed it during the Two Wacky Women Retreat. It is called Happy Haunting and is adorable. Sonia also showed a very pretty and “Wickedly Easy” internet

pattern which only takes 6 fat quarters and is quick to piece.

Sunshine and Shadows

Congratulations to Martha Diaz on the

birth of her Great Granddaughter.

Our sympathies are with Joyce Hargrove

who lost her mother on October 20th.

We also had 17 fabulous mystery quilts shown from the QBS Retreat. The name of the

pattern is Barn Dance Tonight, Chickens Welcome. It was designed and the directions were written by Connie Higgins. The blocks are Hens and Chicks and Hole in the Barn Door. What a great design and what wonderful variations emerged from the various fabric choices!!

President’s Corner

Connie Higgins

Thank you to Tommie Bradford for the enlightening presentation. I have seen the printed interfacing at many shows but admit that I never inquired as to how or what they

were used for. I consider myself a “piecer” but would never have attempted piecing a fan (voluntarily). Now I have a table runner and will make more for gift giving because of the simple construction technique that Tommie introduced me to. We even had time to create

the “Cell Phone Bag”, a gift from Tommie for each of us in class.

December will be upon us soon and it is time to finish up those charity quilts and turn

them in to Community Relations for giving at our Holiday Party next month. Randy has already started distributing information for Holiday giving. Please remember to see her

for the needs of our charities for the Holidays.

Next month we will be drawing for our beautiful opportunity quilt, so finish selling those tickets and get them in to Cathe Hagerman-Beizer. As many of you know we would

like to see every member sell/buy at minimum $20 worth of tickets. With the quilt Cathe and her committee have created, with the help of our members, selling $20 should be “a

piece of cake”.

Just a reminder, we still have positions to fill for 2008...Intraguild, Community Relations just to name a couple. If there is an appointed position or standing committee

you would be interested in, please contact Connie Higgins or Robin Gallagher. For more info on positions please see your QBS Bylaws. We also invite 2008 board members to start

attending board meetings now with the outgoing chair in an attempt to make the transition easier. Board meetings are the 3rd Thursday of the month, in the room where workshops

are held. Hope to see you there.

As Thanksgiving nears, I have taken some time to reflect on the many things

I have to be thankful for...family, extended and otherwise, close friends, and the many friendly faces seen regularly at guild. During this holiday may you find yourself in the company of the friends and family your are thankful for.

Happy Thanksgiving! Connie OG

Meeting Etiquette Please silence your cell phones. If you must have a conversation on your phone during the meeting,

please use the designated area off the hall.

Please be considerate of the speaker and others around you who may be trying to listen by keeping your

conversations to a minimum.

If you feel the speaker holds no interest for you, again, please be considerate of the speaker and those

that are interested and conduct your conversation outside of the meeting room.

Before leaving, check your area. Please be sure that all cups, plates, unwanted fliers, etc, are put in the

trash.

If you already have something ready, and if you know you cannot make it to the December meeting, you can bring it in November.

We drew the tickets for a free workshop at the October meeting. The winners for the first three quarters of 2007 are: Lynne Miller, Dawn Hoyle, and Mary Matthews, congratulations to all. We will have one more drawing this year for the last quarter, then all the tickets will be mixed together and we will draw for one quilt to be quilted by Dean Lund. Thank you Dean.

QUILT’N TILL THE COWS COME HOME

Connie Higgins

Thank you to all of you that participated in the "Mystery" and brought your quilts to the October meeting for Show and Tell. It was great to see so many. They are all beautiful. FYI: I named the quilt "Barn Dance Tonight, Chickens Welcome!" since the blocks used were Hole in the Barn Door and Hens and Chicks. If you would like a label for your quilt, I will have a sample for you at the November meeting.

CONGRATULATIONS to Stephanie Romesburg for her winning cow girl, "Daisy", the bride and to Deb Cardinale for her cow girl in the true spirit of a barn dance. Thank you to all who purchased beans and voted for your favorite "cow girl". We have $35.00 to give to Randy for Community Relations holiday gifts for our charities. Thanks again.

RETREAT 2007

Quiltsmart Pre-printed Fusible Interfacing Kayleen Leone

When Tommie Bradford started “Tommie’s Traveling Quilt Shop” in 1997 she only carried fat quarters. As a vendor at numerous quilt shows she soon learned that quilters wanted more fabric so she expanded her product line to include Fairy Frost, Fossil Ferns, and Batiks.

In 1998 Tommie was introduced to a new product – Quiltsmart – developed by Mary Henderson. While attending a class taught by Eleanor Burns, which utilized a technique of tracing a pattern onto lightweight fusible interfacing used for appliqué, Mary came up with an idea to improve the method. She suggested eliminating the repetitive and imprecise tracing by preprinting the patterns onto fusible interfacing. "After all," she reasoned, "they can print on paper towels, why not print on interfacing?" Mary immersed herself in the world of industrial printing. She soon had a process for accurately printing onto a delicate non-woven fabric fusible interfacing, and thus, Quiltsmart was born.

Tommie loves Quiltsmart for making difficult patterns, such as Double Wedding Ring or Drunkard’s Path, a breeze to sew using the appliqué method. Here are some basic instructions for using Quiltsmart preprinted fusible interfacing patterns.

1.Do not iron the Quiltsmart interfacing to the fabric!! The interfacing is sewn first, turned inside out, and then fused in place to a background fabric.

2.Feel it~~ there is a smooth side and a textured side. The textured side is the fusible side.

3.Pin your fabric and Quiltsmart interfacing together, placing the rough to the right side of fabric. The fusible side of Quiltsmart interfacing MUST face the right side of the fabric. DO NOT IRON THEM TOGETHER.

4.With the printed side up, stitch on the solid lines on the Quiltsmart interfacing using a tight (15 stitches per inch) straight stitch.

5.After sewing on the solid line, cut on the broken line.

6.Now turn right side out. (On some patterns you will cut a slit in the interfacing ONLY to turn right side out.) Use a wood pressing bar to "press" and, if necessary, use a smooth tool to push out the seams from the inside.

7.Now you are ready to use your iron. Place the pattern piece as desired onto the background fabric. Fuse it in place with a dry iron.

8.Secure the pieces using the method of your choice: machine appliqué with invisible thread, decorative thread, or matching thread; hand appliqué using a hidden stitch or with floss using a buttonhole stitch. This is your time to be creative!

Library News With November upon us, we just wanted to take a moment to

thank all of you who’ve participated in the library sales, and in checking out all the new library books this year. We’ve had a great year of fund raising for the guild, and that is in largest part due to you all. Whether you stopped by to buy a magazine or a book, or you dropped off a bag of items you no longer wanted, you’ve helped your guild this year, and we hope gained something from it (even if that something is just some more space to stash fabric, or a new romance novel to read!)

We haven’t kept track of everyone who has donated items, so we won’t take the time to single out those we do remember, just know that every single donation was appreciated, and will continue to be so in the New Year. We would like to acknowledge Sierra Meadows Bears, as we’ve raised nearly $600 from the donations they gave us, and many of them are going on to Community Relations and Intraguild, to continue to help the guild and its programs.

Next year look for more new books and some new opportunities. If you can think of a way we can increase our usefulness to the guild, please let us know. We take all suggestions to heart.

Please do come by and check out the approximately 150 new items in our library, and watch the newsletter for some old favorites to check out. We’ll begin weeding out the library in January, based upon when books were last checked out, so do keep an eye on the articles. We do not want to remove anything anyone might find to be useful, but at the same time, want to use the space as best we can for books that you all can enjoy and make use of for years to come.
