President’sCorner

Thanks to all who attended the May meeting. We had a great Art Show and that is thanks to Marie Kirzl and Sandy Scales. Congrats to Rebecca Hotop and Kathy Bacskay on winning Best of Show. And, Congrats to all the First, Second and Third place winners. There were many great art pieces in the show. Thanks Bobbie for teaching in April. I am so glad that the Chapter bought the camera and projector for teaching. Thanks Ann Davis for setting it up and staying until I finished teaching my project. The next thing on the agenda is Sandy Scales teaching in June and then our big Luncheon. Really looking forward to that event. Don’t forget to bring painted items for the raffle. We will not be meeting in August and read the newsletter for more great projects coming. There isn’t much else going on, so until I see all of you,

Happy Painting, Lorraine

Treasurer’s Report

The balance as of 30 April was $6893.94.

2017 Luncheon Update

Hi All - Our annual luncheon is on Saturday, July 15th at the Holiday Inn-College Park. That's in Maryland and right off the beltway at the Route 1 North exit. As most of you know, the hotel is beside or behind the huge IKEA store, whose sign you can see from the beltway. If you need directions once you're get into Maryland, let me know (before July 15th). For those of you concerned about driving on the beltway, see if you can ride with one of your fellow members.

Our theme this year is Winter Wonderland. Amanda Davis has again agreed to handle the contest, which is based on painted and/or decorated scarves, which can be wearable scarves, wooden painted scarves...whatever you want to do. There will be multiple categories (funny, pretty, etc.) and age groups (i.e., kids and adults, not actual ages).

Please plan to attend the luncheon and bring guests and items for the raffle. As you know, we are a much smaller group than previously and the hotel charge is based on a fixed fee, which we must pay regardless of the number attending. We'd much rather pay for meals for members and their guests than waste money to make up the difference between the cost of meals and the minimum charge.

Come and join us for a fun afternoon of good fellowship, good food, and beautiful raffle items. As an added bonus, Mary Steingesser will be coming back from her new home in Denver for the luncheon, so this will be your chance to say goodbye and wish her well in her new location. Thanks

Mary and BobbieCo-chairs 15

ART SHOW: Sandy Scales and Marie Kirzl thanked all for participating this year, and to please vote their choices in each category at lunch. COMMUNITY SERVICE: Ann Davis reported for Amanda Davis. The painted boxes were donated to the children’s program at Ft. Belvoir Hospital. The painted heads are scheduled for Walter Reed in July. Brookside Gardens has requested painted gourds for their annual auction. Painted gourds should be delivered to Ann before September 1. FOUNDER’S MEDALLION: No report. HISTORIAN: No report. LUNCHEON: Bobby Draves and Mary Steingesser encouraged all members to register by July 1. The luncheon, “Winter Wonderland”, is to be held on Saturday, July 15, at the Holiday Inn in College Park, MD. Give all painted pins to Peg Altemus. Attendees are encouraged to share a painted scarf in the competition at the luncheon. A location for Luncheon 2018 is still to be determined. PARLIAMENTARIAN: No report. PUBLIC RELATIONS: NCC is currently displaying art in the Montclair Library. Upcoming displays are scheduled for Oakton Library in September and Montclair Library in December. They bring their own supplies and cover all their own expenses. Kay

Witt, watercolors and pastels, was also suggested. Ann will approach PVDA about presenting a joint seminar in March or April of 2018. She will contact Tom Jones about availability. WAYS AND MEANS: Peg Altemus encouraged members to purchase raffle tickets. WEBMASTER: No report. NEW BUSINESS: Lorraine Lasch presented Board’s recommendation and motion for vote at the September meeting, to change wording “can” to replace “shall”, in ARTICLE XIV. DISSOLUTION, number 3, so it will read: Any remaining funds as are in the Treasury at the time can be gifted to the National Museum of Decorative Painters as determined by a majority of the remaining members. Any remaining property can also be given to the Society or to another non-profit group, as determined by a majority of the membership remaining. NO OLD BUSINESS ANNOUNCEMENTS: Congratulations to Diane Crean, CDA, who won a blue ribbon for her art at the Dept. of Agriculture Art Contest this year. The contest is open to government employees and contractors. NCC will miss Mary Steingesser when she moves to Colorado June 14, but we look forward to seeing her when she visits at the luncheon in July. The meeting adjourned at 12:00.

Respectfully submitted, Rebecca Benton, Secretary

Correction In the April/May issue of the Newsletter, the demise of Ann Foster was greatly exaggerated ( to paraphrase Mark Twain). She is alive and residing in a nursing home.

CANCELLATIONS If a meeting needs to be cancelled due to weather or other unforeseen events, notification will be posted on the website. We will also use email and a phone tree (if we still have power) to notify members

FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK I can not believe we are already in June. The May meeting and Art Show were fun, Lorraine taught a great piece. The offerings at the art show were great. We really do have exceptional painters.

Upcoming is the July luncheon, do get your reservation in. The committee will need a head count fairly soon.

Ann Gibbons has a great line up of teachers and projects for the rest of the year, see her notes.

Enjoy the summer, be safe in your travels.
