I had a good idea to take a drive through the country in my ’99 M Coupe on a Sunday afternoon in February. The Tarheel Chapter Drivers School was that day so I called a couple of friends to see if they would like to exercise their cars by driving from Durham to VIR and back. We noticed we had a patriotic color combo when we parked, so here is a 4th of July photo tribute from BMW and us. My Imola Red M Coupe, Graham Summerson’s Alpine White 128i Sport, and Alex Aguado’s Interlagos Blue competition Pkg. under one of the oak trees in the infi eld. Then we had a spirited drive home. PAUL HOECKE Notes from the roadThinking Oktoberfest?

Next month – as if you didn’t know – all of us BMW CCA members are invited to attend our annual National Gathering of the Clans, namely Oktoberfest 2013 in Monterey. If you’ve been to one or more of these events, you know it’s a pretty big deal. Aside from a few of the most popular regional meets such as our Vintage, Oktoberfest has no rival in its ability to bring together club members from all over the country for several days’ worth of activities – a concours, a couple of rallies, banquets, tours and of course a driver school. And that’s not counting all the socializing, ‘meeting old friends and making new ones’ as the saying goes. In short, it is without doubt a special occasion for us club types.

Too bad this year’s Fest is being held on the Left Coast.

Okay, I shouldn’t complain, not on account of its location. Those westerners deserve to have an O’fest once in a while. Besides, we here in Tarheel Land ought to be thankful that some Fests are held out there. It was, after all, National’s decision to stage Oktoberfest ‘77 in California that kicked off our driving school program. Yeah, I know; mak-ing this connection seems like a bit of a stretch – kind of like saying that Columbus ‘discovered’ America because Spain, and all of Europe for that matter, didn’t have refrigerators. But the facts are that back in 1977, trekking all the way to the Gold-en State (and back) was not in the cards, so we organized our own Fest of sorts – Tarheel Treffen ’77 in Boone. It too featured a rally, and tours, and a ‘banquet’ – barbecue and country-fried chicken with all the trimmings at the local Holiday Inn. (We didn’t do wine and cheese back then.) Most important, one of the activities involved skid pad exercises at ASU’s Highway Patrol training facility. Those exercises were the seed that grew into our fi rst real driving school at The Rock in 1979, which proves my point, kind of.

Oh, and by the way, my reference to Colum-bus – the explorer, not the city – and fridges is not all that farfetched either. You see, when ol’ Cris-toforo sailed the ocean blue in 1492, he was actu-ally looking for a new route to the spice lands of the East. At the time, spices were a badly needed commodity, used to disguise the gaminess of (you guessed it) non-refrigerated meat past its prime, and the overland routes through Asia had been shut down by the Turks and other hostiles. Okay? But I’ve digressed.

Getting back to Oktoberfest in Monterey, knowing that it’s kicking off in just a short six weeks from now imbues me with an overwhelm-ing urge to reminisce about past Fests. Having attended a good number of these gatherings since they started almost half a century ago, and having had a hand in organizing the two our chapter hosted in 2000 and 2005, there’s plenty to reminisce about. Besides, who knows; you may even fi nd some of my commentary instructive, especially if you’re contemplating going, this time or more likely in the future. So read on.

For us easterners, the fact that the event is taking place on the Left Coast is no less a bum-mer today than it was back in ‘77. Driving coast to coast is feasible, perhaps even enjoyable; but you may want to view my opinion with some skepti-cism; I am, after all, somewhat nuttier than aver-age about road trips. Realistically speaking, driv-ing cross-country takes a lot of extra time, not to mention the wear and tear on your butt. But fl ying has its downsides too. It means you’ll be driving a rental at the Fest, which is a downer – unless you splurge on an M3 or Z4 from one of those high-end agencies the Golden State has aplenty. In short, any way you cut it, it’s two strikes against going this time around.

Having said that, I’d still chance going to Monterey by road, hypothetically speaking – if

The Editor’s Desk...VIR July 2, 2013: Sad day at VIR - the mighty

oak has fallen! I got the word just as this issue of Footnotes was on the presses - STOP THE PRESS-ES (always wanted to say that...). For those of us lucky enough to have known this old oak, it is sad news indeed.

“We are in shock and mourning,” said track owner Connie Nyholm. “We are grateful no one was at the corner station or on track when she fell and that there is no damage to the track surface.”

The massive oak stood sentinel at the south end of the racetrack, looking out from the highest point on the property. Its branches shaded the apex of the legendary Oak Tree Turn, looking down on the likes of Roger Penske, Walt Hansgen, Tom Kristensen and Richard Petty as well as a host of race drivers from the brilliant to the not so.

“I can tell you this,” Nyholm said, “The Oak Tree will live on in our minds and hearts, and we will give it an appropriate send-off. Please email your thoughts and suggestions to [email protected] for proper ways to honor this old friend.”! -ed.

I were driving in what we used to call a convoy. (Nowadays, the preferred term is ‘caravan’; I guess it sounds less warlike.) Oktoberfest convoys were a fairly frequent Tarheel Chapter practice in the early days for any number of reasons – doing it in good company, availability of help in case of breakdowns, you name it. And they were fun. I have fond memories of several. There was the 1,000-mile drive to O’fest ’78 in Oconomowoc, WI, which eight of us accomplished in a tad over 48 hours (with a three-hour sleep break in Indi-ana). The other memorable aspect of ’78 was the people we met – folks like David Hobbs and an old dude from Munich who may have been Alex von Falkenhausen. But memory is fi ckle, so don’t hold me to that.

There was also the trek to Boston in ’79, which started out with three BMWs but ended up collecting ten more en route. That was fortu-nate; having most of that same group along on the return trip saved my butt big time when my Die Hard died hard and wouldn’t accept a charge. Clearly there was safety in numbers. Perhaps the

one I enjoyed most was in 1990, when a score of us Tarheelers, driving more than a dozen BMWs, headed to Columbus, OH. Most of the cars were E30 M3s, but two were orange (Inka, I believe) 2002tiis driven, respectively, by the late Pete McHenry and the Jensens. Our convoy caused a bit of a stir en route. Listening to our CB radios (yes, we still had them), we heard one baffl ed trucker talk about this foreign-car convoy that looked like a “gray snake with an orange head and tail”, zipping like “bats out of hell” through the West Virginia mountains; and how Smokey was looking for us but couldn’t catch up. The trooper was probably still looking when we headed home, at a more sedate pace, a week later.

That 1990 Fest was also the scene of a few di-sasters for our group. During the TSD rally, one of our guys managed to puncture the oil pan of his Fiver when he launched the car across a railroad track a mite too quickly and came down hard on a rock on the other side. And another driver was forced to sit out the driver school at the Mid-Ohio track after a way-too-enthusiastic spin down a gravel road landed him in a ditch with a crumpled fender. But with all the tools and talent in our group, both cars got fi xed, enough so to make the drive home. Like I said, there was safety in num-

bers. These days, it seems the only convoys – uh, caravans are organized by folks going to Vintage. I wonder why.

To return to the matter at hand – Monterey – I have to admit that those Oktoberfest organiz-ers are getting smarter. Like for instance, they’ve scheduled all of the show-and-brag stuff – you know: the concours and clean car contests – at the start of the week. In the past, those events were often stuck toward the end, sometimes even just before the Farewell Banquet. This invariably gave the toothbrush and Q-Tip crowd conniptions as they had to deal with the grime accumulated in the driving events. But their other option was even worse – forget about the rallies and the school, which is why I never signed up for the concours. Monterey’s Fest eliminates this con-cern quite nicely. And early birds arriving a few days before the start can feast their eyes on more automotive eye candy – at the Legends of the Au-tobahn show hosted by a local country club; and the Festorics event at Laguna Seca. But you knew all that. I only mention it because it’s the kind of bonus I never got to enjoy at any of the O’fests I’ve attended. Boo hoo!

Speaking of Laguna Seca, the driver school is bound to be a hoot: Four days of learning to ne-

gotiate the Cork Screw for Goodness sake! Need I say more? Actually, schools happen to be one Fest aspect that has gotten better and better over the years; must be those super tracks that have sprouted all over the country. As for the tours and rallies, the record is more mixed. I envy the folks who’ll be looking for checkpoints in the coun-tryside around Monterey and Carmel. It’s pretty, and hilly, with vineyards and big time agricultural operations – and lots of nice two-lanes. But that’s quite unlike a couple of Fest rallies I’ve been on in recent years; the way they had me cruise through a lot of sprawling suburbs made me feel I was on a real estate tour! And by the way, a word of cau-tion about O’fest rallies: Avoid getting placed in the top class – Prepared, Class A, Expert or what-ever the label may be. It’s the one with the really serious contestants, which almost invariably leads to protests and heated arguments over sup-posedly dimwit instructions, allegedly invisible checkpoints and what have you. The colorful lan-guage employed on such occasions by the likes of the late ‘Hormone’ Fischer still rings in my ears.

As far as the raffl e goes, all I can say is: You pay your money and you take your chances. With all those absentees buying block of tickets, the odds aren’t great. In forty years, this chapter has had only a few winners of the big prize, maybe three or four, including one who I recall wasn’t at O’fest – and thought it was a crank call when we phoned him with the good news! Like I said, it’s up to you and Lady Luck.

Let’s see; what have I overlooked? Oh, yeah; Oktoberfest hotels tend to get booked solid pretty early. It’s happened to me the last two times; I had to look far afi eld for vacancies, which wasn’t fun; and I understand it has happened again this year, as both the main hotel and the overfl ow hostelry were out of rooms by mid-May. So, if you’re thinking of attending a future Oktoberfest, the word is: Book REAL early, like three months in advance, and even that may be cutting it close. Of course, that wouldn’t be much of a problem if our chapter were to host another Oktoberfest in, say, 2015. Hey, it’s just a thought.

This is one of those rare times we fi nd our-selves a bit short of events to write about. It’s not so much that no one was racing these past couple of months; there’s been plenty of action – at BMW Club Racing, NASA and vintage events. But when it comes to what our homegrown racing crowd has been up to – our main purpose in doing this report – there’s been precious little to talk about.

Okay, we can blame some of that on the fact that several events – notably last month’s Club race at VIR – were still in our future when we fi led this report. But mainly it has been the absence of local drivers from recent races, whether they were Club Racing (CR) events or those staged by other sanctioning bodies. It may therefore seem an ab-solute waste of space to list events where no local racers were present, but we’ll do it anyway, just to prove we’re not being lazy.

On the CR front, there were two events since the April race at VIR that past history says could have attracted a few Tarheel drivers, but didn’t. The race at Mid-Ohio in May, hosted by the Northern Ohio Chapter, saw some forty entries, including fi ve from our region but none from our chapter. And as far as we can determine, the thirty or so entries in last month’s race at NJMP’s Thun-derbolt course didn’t include a single local hot shoe either. So, what gives? Our best guess is that last month’s race at VIR – the one we still owe you a report on – proved to be a more attractive venue that those two more distant tracks.

Local drivers did run in NASA events, though

only with the Southeast Region. The ‘Savannah Sizzler’, at Roebling Road in April, saw a couple of local hot shoes show up: Dave Herrington, who ran with a sizable bunch of Spec E30 drivers in two sprint races and didn’t do so badly in both; and Jon ’the Jet’ Kozlow, who must have burned some serious rubber in the Time Trials that week-end, as he fi nished a close second in Class D on Saturday and posted the winning time Sunday. And a month later, Herrington and Kozlow also competed in the ‘Pit Bull Brawl’ at CMP in mid-May, where Al ‘the Rev’ Taylor joined Herrington in the Spec E30 group. The E30s were the largest class at this event, which evidently turned that contest into quite a brawl (to borrow a term), as Taylor’s best fi nish was sixth place and Herrington never made it close to the front all weekend. At least you gotta give them credit for showing our fl ag, as it were. On the other hand, our home-grown hot shoes were total no-shows at the Mid-Atlantic Region’s ‘Spring Rumble’ at Summit Point in April. The fi eld included lots of BMWs in several classes, but nary a driver from our racing crowd! (The Region drew a bye in May; and their June event, also at Summit Point, took place way past our press time.)

That being said, we expect this ‘drought’ on our part to be a temporary phenomenon. After all, one look at the schedules of the racing orga-nizations we cover suggests that our next report may have some good racing stories. Besides, Skip Bryan, our roving vintage reporter, still owes us

Mid-Season Doldrums - A Recap

a story about the Jefferson 500 race the VDCA staged jointly with the Vintage Racer Group (VRG) at Summit Point in mid-May. So, we suggest you stay tuned.

Meanwhile, this being the midpoint of the racing season, it may be time to visit a topic that tends to move to the front burner this time of year; namely, the chase after CR championship points. But as we look at the record to date, we fi nd little to prognosticate about as far as local drivers are concerned, and the reason isn’t their lack of ability; it is participation, or rather the lack thereof.

Anyone who has watched our homegrown racing crowd in action knows that we have a bunch of excellent and highly competitive driv-ers in our midst. If you want proof, consider the lineup at the VIR race in April, which saw at least two Tarheel drivers compete in half the classes, including the three biggest ones at the event. Yet, as we have mentioned, our hot shoes have been, with a few exceptions, notable by their absence at CR events, before or since the April race. And,

with apologies to The Bard, that is where the rub is at. It boils down to what Woody Allen allegedly once said; to wit, that showing up is 99 percent of life. In this case, you collect points by showing up at events. It’s that simple.

As Steve Bassen said to us the other day, “for goodness’ sakes, you get fi ve points just for being there!” But, he added, it isn’t lack of enthusiasm or dedication to the sport that keeps our racers from showing up. When you race for love of the sport, not money, you have to strike a balance; there’s also daily life and work to consider. We couldn’t agree more. In fact, we think Bassen is an excellent example of what we’re talking about. We’re willing to bet that if he were to run in only half the CR events this season, he’d be a shoo-in for a national CM crown. But he prefers to strike that balance we spoke of, and that’s something all of us ought to understand and respect.

As things stand now, it looks like the only lo-cal contender for a regional championship – if not a national one – may be Rich Abraham. As of the end of May, he had won I-Prepared in three races

Page 10: Volume XLI No. 7 July 2013 - BMW Car Club of America · The TARHEEL CHAPTER, BMW CCA, INC. (herein-after referred to as the ©ClubTM) is a non-profi t North Carolina corporation.

8 TARHEEL CHAPTER FOOTNOTES http://www.tarheelbmwcca.org

at Road Atlanta, and fi nished near the top of the class at VIR in April while battling strong class rivals. However, he did not race in some events which a few of those same class rivals – notably Julie Wolf – did run in. There’s also Dennis Pippy, who historically has been a contender for a M3T championship, including winning the national top spot last season. But so far, his #100 E30 M3 – now resplendent in a bright orange paint job – has been seen only at VIR, where he posted a single class win. Meanwhile, his strongest class rivals, guys like Ron Checca and Brian Stein, have been accumulating track time (and points?) at other events since the VIR race. And so it goes.

Of course, we’re probably getting ahead of things, playing these guessing games. The season is only half over, and it ain’t over ‘til – well, let’s just say Roebling Road. Besides, it’s not our place or intention to second-guess what these guys ought to be doing. After all, they race because they love it; and needless to say, we love watching them do it. And if winning a championship is not a priority, that’s okay by us.

Turning to the pro racing front, Bimmer-World Racing (BWR) was back in CTSCC action last month, in two races a couple of weeks apart – Round Five at Mid-Ohio and Round Six at Wat-kins Glen. But since both races took place well after press time for this report, those of you who watch the series on SPEED are way ahead of us in knowing what happened. We’ll just have to play catch-up with the results next month.

For now, all we can say is that the month-long layover in May had to have been a welcome

respite for James Clay and his troops after all the ups and downs in the preceding four races. To recap, the ups included two ST podium fi nishes – the second place taken by Greg Liefooghe and Tyler Cooke in the season opener at Daytona, and another No.2 fi nish by the BWR rookie duo of Greg Strelzoff and Connor Bloum in Round Four at Road Atlanta – plus several Top Ten fi nishes in between, at Austin/COTA and Barber. But there have been plenty of downs too. Perhaps the most galling downer was at Road Atlanta, where two of the BWR cars – the #81 car of Liefooghe and Cooke, as well as the #82 car driven by Dan Rog-ers and Seth Thomas – got taken out of conten-tion with serious contact damage due to what Rogers called “extremely poor choices [made] by other drivers.” We won’t suggest they wore a chip on their shoulders when they headed to Mid-Ohio, but they sure must have been looking for retribution!

As you read this, Team BWR is about to load their trailers for the trip to Indy, which holds fond memories (from last year) for at least some of the drivers. And following Indy, it’ll get hectic; they’ll have just two weeks to gear up for next month’s Round Eight at Road America – in conjunction with ALMS! If we’re not mistaken, this means the BMW Motorsport/Team RLL Z4 GTE will be there too. The action that weekend should be some-thing to watch! We wish we could be there. Of course, there’s always SPEED….

Meanwhile though, we can only wish Clay and his team the best of racer’s luck.

What is it about beautiful cars displayed on pristinely manicured golf course fairways that attract car enthusiasts around the world like a magnet? Remarkably, this hasn’t been something a car enthusiast could experience at the world re-nowned Pinehurst Golf Resort located in Pinehu-rst, NC – the location of one of America’s greatest golf courses and premier resorts.

That all changed this year with the inaugural Pinehurst Concours d’Elegance held May 3-5. De-spite unseasonably overcast skies and cold winds, the organizers pulled off a coup with a strong showing of 118 beauti-ful and historically sig-nifi cant cars displayed along the fairways at the Pinehurst Golf Resort. (The 118 corresponds to the 118th anniversary of the Pinehurst Resort.) The chief judge was no less than Paul Ianuario, who is also the curator at the BMW Zentrum in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The organiz-ers followed the proven “important car event” formula well – prestigious board of advisors, check; a collection of truly great cars on display, check; a contestant drive through the countryside before the weekend (in this case to nearby Army base Fort Bragg), check; car auction on Friday and Saturday, check; big company sponsors like Porsche, NA (BMW NA are you putting this on your calendar for 2014?), check; and the main event Concours d’Elegance with award ceremony on Sunday, check. To the standard formula, the organizers also mixed in many unique elements to express the charm and hospitality associated with the South and Pinehurst, as emphasized by the pair of handmade white rocking chairs placed next to each car displayed at the Concours. The Best of Show winner was a magnifi cent 1938 Steyr Roadster owned by Peter Boyle of Oil City, PA.

Having the Pinehurst Concours d’Elegance happening in our own backyard was too good of an opportunity to miss fi nding a way for the Tar-heel Chapter to have a presence. Fortunately, we found a welcome response from the organizers to set up a corral for our members to park their BMWs while attending the Concours. We ended up with 33 members registered to take advantage of the special corral deal we arranged. In addition, we also picked up another 10+ BMWs that the parking guards sent to our corral (because they were BMWs). For this fi rst time run, having some

non-member BMW owners share our corral with us was fi ne – the more the merrier.

All of the BMWs parked in one area along with our new Tarheel Chapter fl ags, banners and canopy did a good job attracting general admission attendees going in/out of the Concours to stop by and take a look at our cars. Many took pictures (especially of an Amelia Island award winning 3.0

CS), and stopped to ask questions. A few asked for new member apps, too. We got great feedback from our members who enjoyed the event, and got a good chance to meet fellow members. The prime parking location near the entrance to the Concours was tough to beat.

All in all, this was a great fi rst run for the Pinehurst Concours d’Elegance. If you have the opportunity, I would highly recommend attending in 2014. (The Concours is already booked for the fi rst weekend in May thru at least 2015.)

Special thanks to Brian Barr, Competition Director, on the Pinehurst Concours d’Elegance team who helped us make our corral possible. Also the members who helped run the corral with me, and the Tarheel Chapter board of directors. -R. Victor Varney

In lieu of our monthly dinner in the Triangle Area, we decided to do something new for May. Rather than sit in a restaurant for a dinner and a presentation (nothing wrong with that….), we de-cided to bring all our cars together for a cruise-in so we could spend dinner time in the parking lot amongst our cars while visiting each other.

We ended up getting over 60 BMWs (includ-ing a few of the 2 wheel variety), and 10 or more Mini’s for this fi rst time event at a well-known German restaurant in Durham, NC – the Bavarian Brathaus. In addition, our friends at Performance BMW in nearby Chapel Hill brought along 4 high drool factor cars (a brand new M5, a new Frozen Blue M3, a tricked out new 335i, and a really low

mile CPO M3). They also brought over the “most unexpected BMW” – a 1 series ActiveE electric car. Take a look at the pictures – there were BMWs everywhere.

Despite threat of rain (that never showed up), and unexpectedly slow restaurant service (with food and beer that never showed up for some), we all had a great time meeting current and “pro-spective” members in a parking lot fi lled with BMWs. The evening was made all the better with the music from the German Oompah Trio Band (courtesy of Performance BMW, too).

We will likely do this again later this year. Probably at another location to see how it goes. Don’t miss it! -R. Victor Varney
