Strengthening Family Life in Our Community

IN 2012, WE SHARED with you stories of children and families whose lives were changed thanks to your generosity. The “Smiths” grew closer as a family and learned techniques to be better parents to their six children, including two-year-old “Joey,” who learned the skills he needed to be school-ready. “Jason” was safely reunited with his family after his father received the drug counseling he needed. Once defiant and ag-gressive, “Sam” learned techniques to manage his behavior, graduated high school and has a full time job. And hardworking Shanelle excelled in a caring, supportive environ-ment, earning an impressive college scholarship.

Although some of their names have been changed, these are real people who needed our help. Because you shared your gifts with us, we were able to serve them through the Parent-Child Home Program, SHORES drug and alcohol counseling, Specialized Alternative Schools, Youth Workforce Development, In-Community Family Stabiliza-tion, SNAP®, and Supervised Independent Living. Your support has enabled these life-changing programs.

From the children and families who were helped in 2012, thank you. From Holy Family’s board and staff who work tirelessly to support HFI programs and initiatives, thank you. And from the very bottom of my heart, thank you, for improving the lives of youth and families who are at risk. We are incredibly grateful to have the support of each indi-vidual, business and organization that invests in our young people by donating to Holy Family Institute.

With warm appreciation,

Sister Linda Yankoski, CSFNPresident and Chief Executive Officer

Dear Friends,

IT’S NOT OFTEN THAT A DAY GOES BY when we don’t hear or read about the ben-efits of a nutritious diet and exercise (and the risks of an unhealthy lifestyle). But in reality, not every person has the tools they need to achieve a healthier lifestyle. Fami-lies who are struggling with other issues often put their health on the back burner, and consequently, many children and youth arriving in foster care have health issues due to undiagnosed or untreated chronic conditions.

Through generous support from the Highmark Foundation, Holy Family has launched Healthy for Life, an exciting new initiative to help young people and their families es-tablish and maintain lifelong healthy eating and physical fitness behaviors. From meal planning on a budget to in-home cooking lessons, youth and their families learn how to develop better diets and choose healthy foods and snacks. Through a physical fitness program developed by an expert in the field, they learn how to incorporate regular exer-cise into their particular environment and lifestyle.

The program works to overcome the bar-riers to healthy eating faced by youth and families in our In-Community Family Sta-bilization program. However, because the entire HFI food preparation and delivery system was revamped as a result of this project, everyone who receives their food

through HFI’s system receives the benefits of this program, including the Pressley Ridge School for Autism and School for the Deaf, residents of HFI College Prepara-tory Program, and residents living in group homes on the HFI campus.

We are grateful to the Highmark Foun-dation for their commitment to making healthier lifestyles an achievable reality for the children and families we serve. ◆

A holiday season filled with giving WE ARE BLESSED ALL YEAR LONG with gifts of time and donations from our volun-teers and supporters, but the holiday season is a time when their generous giving spirit truly shines the brightest. The 2012 holiday season was no exception.

Caring individuals from local churches, businesses, and organizations came together to make sure that all children, youth and families served by Holy Family could experience and enjoy a magical Christmas season. Some groups collected much-needed items such as cookware, bedding, coats, household essentials, and plenty of toys, sharing their blessings with deserving recipients.

Other groups planned outings, such as taking a group of HFI youth to visit the Veter-ans Hospital, bringing gifts for veterans who have served our country and giving these youth a chance to meet real life heroes.

Many friends planned and held Christmas parties for the children and families in our care, filled with joyful music, worship, prayer, great food, entertainment, and of course, Santa Claus! Cathy Pelusi and Amy DiMichele compiled a wonderful Christmas art show in the bridge area near the chapel and on the altar for all of HFI and guests to enjoy.

Thank you to everyone who made this season truly magical for the children, youth and families of Holy Family Institute.

LING ROLLED OUT OF BED on a bright morning last fall and shook the sleep from her eyes. It was the first day of school, and she was excited to begin her junior year of classes at Vincentian Academy. She had breakfast and caught the bus to school, where she enjoyed a full day of classes and saw her friends again. Afterwards, she participated in an after-school study program and then returned home to eat dinner, chattering excitedly to her family about her day and her excitement for the upcoming tennis season. Sounds like a typical start to a new school year, right?

Only Ling isn’t your average high school student. She is one of 65 enthusiastic stu-dents from China who attend local private high schools as part of the Holy Family International College Preparatory Program (HFICPP). HFICPP is a self-sustaining English-immersion program providing ser-vices to students seeking a better future through education in the United States.

opportunities we take for granted in America. HFICPP provides a global cam-pus that gives these students a struc-tured environment where intellectual, social and emotional learning are equally valued, while helping to bolster support for our local Catholic high school part-ners.

In its second year of operation, the HFICPP has expanded to include “Home Stay” as an option for returning students like Ling. So after her first day at school, Ling was welcomed home by Cindy and Joe, her home stay parents, and Ally, her home stay sister and fellow classmate at Vincentian. Having met at school the previous year, Ally and Ling quickly became friends, and when the Home Stay option became available, Cindy and Joe knew immediately that they wanted to participate and invite Ling to live with them.

Home Stay Families are needed in a vari-ety of communities to serve students at each of HFICPP’s six partner schools in the Pittsburgh area: Vincentian Acad-emy, Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic, Bishop Canevin, Seton-La Salle, Quigley Catholic, and St. Joseph High School, as

The Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program of the Pennsylvania Depart-ment of Community and Economic Development (DCED) offers businesses the opportu-nity to provide significant assistance to schools and families each year. These dollars are designated to support scholarships and educational improvement programs for schools. Businesses have the option of selecting a specific educational institution or program for receipt of the corporate donation.

Qualifying businesses or corporate entities receive a 75% tax credit for each yearly com-mitment of up to $400,000. For those who choose to commit the same amount of fund-ing for two years the tax credit on the donation increases to 90%. It creates a win-win for both businesses and institutions working so hard to provide students with the best opportunities to learn.

Holy Family Institute is approved to receive donations as both a scholarship organization and educational improvement organization. This past year, HFI was recognized for its contributions to students most in need by receiving 14 EITC donations, totaling approxi-mately $250,000 in support. ◆

With EITC, businesses can support HFI and save on state taxes

> If your business, large or small, is interested in be-coming an approved EITC provider, please visit www.hfi-pgh.org/eitc or contact Michael Caliguiri at 412.766.9020 x219 or [email protected].

well as Trinity High School, our partner location in Camp Hill, PA. Home Stay Families receive a monthly payment based on a per diem rate to offset ad-ditional living expenses, and they receive ample support with training and proac-tive monthly check-ins from an HFICPP home stay coordinator.

More importantly, Home Stay Families have the chance to share in the joy and excitement experienced by students like Ling, or Jenny, who participates in her school’s music program, or Leo, an artist who designed the cover of Bishop Can-evin’s Leonid newspaper this past spring, or Jason, a member of North Catholic’s basketball team. These students would love the chance to become part of an American family and learn about their cultural customs and habits firsthand. They are eager to share their own cul-ture too!

Home Stay Families need to provide a safe and caring environment, including a private bedroom, a quiet place to study, and access to daily meals for their visit-ing student. Home Stay Families must also support the student’s academic and extra-curricular needs, such as participa-tion in athletics or other school activi-ties, and make transportation arrange-ments if not available through the school district. ◆
