Square?

-by William M. Lynk, CML, CPS, ICML, M.Ed. Interchangeable Core Specialist

Even though this vintage Sargent square mortise lock & key is not an IC, it is still fascinating that it worked! It was used especially in New England churches and utilized square pins that were stepped and seated in the square plug holes.

This month’s LSA Reporter:

https://www.LSAmichigan.org/Newsletters/November2017-LSA.pdf Framon is running a Blowout Birthday Special. See the flyer in the LSA Reporter on page 15.

It’s much more than JUST a mortise cylinder.

William Lynk, internationally known for his expertise in Small Format Interchangeable Cylin-ders (SFIC) will be doing a 180 second in-service, understanding the significance of seven specific characteristics of the SFIC Mortise housing that are often misunderstood. Thank you also to Dean Reese, to make it possible for each member attending the November meeting to take a BEST brand mortise cylinder housing and put it in profitable action. This BEST brand cylinder housing, when new, comes with a list price of $50.00+.

PacLock Honors LSA with Commemorative 40th

Anniversary Padlock

The LSA is coming close to the end of the year representing our 40th anniversary in providing locksmiths education from some of the worlds most recognized experts in many locksmith re-lated subjects. Perhaps that is one of the reasons the LSA has so many CMLs, CPLs, CRLs, ARLs & XYZs. We are proud of this achievement and believe you should be, too. The lock-smith industry also recognizes our achievements. Pacific Lock Co (PacLock) is working with the LSA to provide a limited edition, keyed padlock with an inscription recognizing the LSA for its accomplishments. Each LSA member is welcome to received one of these, soon to be coveted, padlocks. Claim YOURS at the December LSA meeting. www.paclock.com

Update:

Kelvin Heath gave a review how to navigate the web based ClearStar locksmith forum. In November, Kelvin will be showing some of the neat information he has learned on ClearStar. www.ClearStar.com

Lots of free stuff on the “Free” table. Plus, last month, some pretty quality drawing items

were given away.

Not-So-Common Key Blanks

The “not-so-common” key blanks for this month will be the Silca FO34 & Taylor 47S. Gale Johnson did some homework for the LSA on these keyblanks. We will share his findings of the series these keyblanks fit. Everyone attending the November LSA meeting will be able to add those keyblanks to their keyboard.

Putting Closure

Last month we had a little technical difficulty bring up the appropriate diagrams on the over-head screed while John Hubel was explaining Schlage’s Classic keyway sections, how multi-milled keys fit into in the pyramid and how to utilize that information. Putting closure to that technical moment each November LSA attendee will receive a “grab-and-go” ring containing a Schlage original keyblank in each of the Schlage Classic key sections. Peter Detzler, from Allegion, will make sure each LSA attendee has a poster of the Schlage Classic keyway pro-files for visual recognition. We appreciate the generosity of many locksmiths outside our metro Detroit area. These locksmiths enjoy making sure our local members get the very best in-services and education possible. Richard Vigue from Maine, Tom Schmidt from Wisconsin, Dean Reese from Cali-fornia, Casey Camper from Colorado, and Gale Johnson from Chicago. The list really is end-less. Thank you.

“JOHN’S RANDOM THOUGHTS” - CONTINUED JOHN HUBEL, CML, ICML, M.ED.

The Passing of Bill Prokup

The Locksmith Security Association of Michigan (LSA) wishes to express our deep-est condolences to Bill Prokup’s family. Bill was a great guy. Bill often spent time with the LSA, enthusiastically presented the product lines of the company he represented (Allegion). Some of Bill’s time was assisting individual members of our association by walking us through issues we might have had with his product lines. Bill was also will-ing to give generously of his time to answer any questions by phone or in person, and irrespective of the branding of product. Often Bill would go on-site with locksmiths to meet with our clients, making sure we properly recommend the appropriate product and allowing our clients to feel comfortable using the products we recommended. Bill rep-resented his company well. We trust his legacy will be embraced by his successor.
