Community St. Vincent de Paul Holiday Food DriveThank you to all families who generously donated to our St. Vincent de Paul Holiday Food Drive this year. Our Campus Ministry gathered all goods and delivered them to our local SVDP Conference to be distributed. Monday morning SVDP members will visit our classrooms to explain to students where and how the donated goods will be distributed.Making Strides Against Breast Cancer UpdateThe American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk was held on Saturday, October 22nd in Golden Gate Park. Current and former students, parents, staff, and friends represented our school to raise both money and awareness for the fight against breast cancer. Also, during the month of October, we had two Pink & Denim "fee" dress days and sold items before school to raise additional funds. Thank you to Mrs. Gerardi and her wonderful helpers, Ms. Allison Wood and Ms. Thuy Tran, who graciously agreed to take charge of the morning sales. These lovely ladies did an amazing job! Also, an extra special thank you to our anonymous donor who generously sponsored our bus transportation to and from Golden Gate Park. And, lastly, thank you to you, our wonderful school community; we will soon be presenting a check for $2165.73 to the American Cancer Society in memory of Mrs. Marnelle Vierra Ducey, a former teacher and friend of Assumption. -Mrs. MartinKindergarten Fun NightYesterday day evening we hosted our annual Kindergarten Fun Night. This fun, hands-on, arts and craft evening is for current kindergarteners and their parents as well as prospective families with 4 year olds with a learning interest in what our school offers children and families. We had 23 lively, happy, and excited kids making turkey headbands, hand puppets, playing digital math and rhyming games, and participating in other engaging activities. The evening was great fun and a true team effort. Thank you to Mrs. Munoz, Mrs. Trujillo, and Mrs. Zahradka for providing all children and their families a fun night. Special thanks to Mrs. Kelli Jackman (Katherine ’21), Mrs. Patti Larsen (Jack ’19), and Mrs. Mirasol Nuttman (Zoey ’19) who, guided by Mrs. Jackman, provided all with pizza, cookies, and refreshments.Science Fair Judges NeededSee Flyer

Peace Blue TablesRecently the school administration purchased new blue picnic tables and placed them in various spots around campus. These tables bring bright color to our campus and allow for students to sit, eat, and gather in a comfortable, social space. Thank you to Mr. Clement and Matthew S. (’17) for assembling the tables. The last week of the year of Mercy! How can we show others the mercy of God? We say that God is compassionate, but we ignore the poor. We say that God loves us and has mercy on us, but we hold grudges against our friends. Our actions need to authentically reflect God’s mercy. Please remember as the Jubilee Year of Mercy comes to an end on Sunday, November 20 that the Teachings of Jesus still live in both the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. Thanksgiving and Advent are meaningful times to practice:
*Feeding the hungry *Counseling the doubtful *Giving drink to the thirsty *Instructing the ignorant *Sheltering the homeless *Admonishing the sinners *Visiting the sick *Comforting the sorrowful *Visiting the prisoners *Forgiving injuries *Burying the dead *Bearing wrongs patiently *Giving alms to the poor *Praying for the living and the dead

This event celebrates the spirit of giving by raising funds for:
Davis Street Preschool Hot Breakfast Program
Look for your St. Nick’s envelope in your family envelope. Have your
child fill it out and bring it in on Friday for the sale.
Brain Copeland, Assumption Alumni family, started this tradition 20+ years ago. The
program feeds breakfast to preschoolers all year.
That is over 10,000 meals because of our generosity.
How you can help:
1. We ask each family to donate 10-15 gift items that the children can purchase
for their families, pets and friends.
Gently used items make thoughtful gifts: Picture frames can be filled with
photos, teacups and mugs can be filled with candy or tea, etc. We need
items for dads and pets! Family and neighbors can be a good source for
these items.
Donations can be dropped off at school office beginning Mon, Nov. 28th.
2. Donate a raffle prize. Toys, activities, electronics or cash for purchasing
raffle prizes. The raffle is an important portion of the Boutique’s success.
3. Help with set-up in Small Hall – Wed, Nov. 30, 6pm-9pm and/or Thurs, Dec. 1,
6pm-9pm
4. Help as St. Nick Elf on Fri, Dec. 2, 8am-3pm.
Part-time shifts available. (Earn those Service Hours!)
Please Contact:
Nancy Ramos at [email protected] or (510) 635-6560
Thank you all for your generous support.

Catholic Schools: Communities of Academic Excellence
VOL. 1 n NO. 3
A C A T H O L I C S C H O O L E D U C A T I O N N E W S L E T T E R
We all want what’s best for our children. Twenty-first century parents are savvy consumers and they want more for their children. Comparatively, Catholic schools provide academic rigor and better educational outcomes by developing the whole child – mentally, physically and spiritually.
Catholic schools offer comprehensive accredited curriculums that promote and foster academic achievement for every child. In addition to strong programs in the academic basics, Catholic schools offer challenging programs for gifted students as well as specialized programs for exceptional learners. With smaller class sizes, Catholic school teachers are better able to address the needs of each child and encourage their students to discover their creativity and unique talents.
Amazingly, research dating back over 30 years indicates that academic excellence and character development are complimentary. To emphasize one and not the other would be a disservice to students. As faith-centered environments, Catholic schools impart both. The priority given to religious, moral and spiritual development is a significant plus.
Catholic schools engage in an ongoing process of evaluation, certification and accreditation of both teachers and programs. An emphasis of continuous improvement for teachers through regular professional development opportunities ensures their accountability and guarantees the maintenance of the traditional high standards of Catholic schools.
Research shows that Catholic school students develop more effective academic skills and score significantly above the national average on standardized tests.
The latest data released from the National Center for Education Statistics for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) indicates that eighth graders in our Catholic schools score an average of 12 and 20 points higher in math and reading (http://bit.ly/2feqv2h), 14 points higher in technology and engineering literacy (http://bit.ly/2edWHR0), and 17 points higher in history, geography, and civics when
compared to eighth graders in public schools. Also, twelfth graders in Catholic schools score an average of 20 and 26 points higher in math and reading (http://bit.ly/2fEIz8k). Furthermore, these same twelfth graders will score an average of 45, 43, and 53 points higher on their math, reading, and writing SAT assessments (http://bit.ly/2fd5C7s), respectively.
Additionally, students in Catholic high schools have a 99 percent graduation rate with more than 90 percent attending college. Of those attending college, students who graduate from Catholic high schools are more likely to complete their degree program of study. Catholic schools have a proven track record of success in educating students from urban, rural and suburban settings.
Catholic education is challenging. High expectations of all students, fully-qualified and dedicated faculty, high standards and academic rigor, personalized attention and strong motivation result in higher academic outcomes and successful transitions to high school and college. Who wouldn’t want this for their child? Catholic schools represent affordable excellence. Don’t be afraid to share this information with your friends, family, neighbors and colleagues!

GGBA YouTube Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thHtAjlvi90
The Story Behind GGBA -- After learning only 8% of youth baseball players play in high school due in part to inaccessibility of advanced training, Tyler Manca (O’Dowd ’18, Corpus Christi ’14) was motivated to give back to the game by providing free clinics so more youth could stay in the game. With the help of fellow O’Dowd players Luke Ditzler, Ben Lancaster, and Zach Thompson, past and current coaches, and strong community support, GGBA was born. GGBA thanks all who have donated generous time, funds, gear, facilities, and expertise to ensure a successful and satisfying experience for all.
