ROTARY
SERVING
HUMANITY
By Charles Ramos
President Debbie Narver called the meet-
ing to order, and led the singing of the na-
tional anthem. Our Invocation today was de-
livered by Denise Wittkofski who reminded
us to be thankful of all that we have.
Visiting Rotarians and Guests
John Shillabeer called for
visiting Rotarians and guests.
There was one visiting Rotarian, Graham
Calder of Nanaimo Daybreak. There were
numerous guests: Ron Willis, Charlotte
Mougeot, Mike Fernier, Chris Densmoor,
and Mike Nygren
Health of the Club
Yvan Gosselin was sick today and unavailable to report
on the health of the club. John Salem underwent knee sur-
gery and is recovering at home.
President’s Remarks
President Debbie gave a synopsis of the club communi-
cation discussion, engagement, and the upcoming January
17th board meeting. She suggested we sing Happy Birthday
to Bob Janes in recognition of the first New Year birthday.
A rousing rendition followed.
Announcements
John Heisterman thanked all of the
companies that donated goods, time and
money to the Bayview Christmas lunch,
and suggested the club find a way to rec-
ognize the companies formally, possibly
by making donations to charities in their
names. Some of the companies contribut-
ing to a successful lunch were Mr. Lube,
Barsby School, Mrs Riches, Thrifty
Foods and Johnson Wholesale Drugs.
Joan Ryan reported on Interact and Rotaract activities
Lila Tanner announced that the Nanaimo
North Town Centre will supply materials
and equipment to paint the bathroom used
by club members during the book sale, and
all we need to do is supply the labour. Con-
tact Lila to sign up.
Douglas Anderson announced that the
bridge signup sheet is being circulated
Janeane Coutu thanked guest and manager, Mike Ny-
gren, for all the help we receive from the Nanaimo North
Town Centre for every book sale
Sergeant at Arms
John Heisterman was to-
day’s Sergeant at Arms. After
several fines and holiday sto-
ries, he opened up the floor to
happy and sad bucks.
Happy and sad bucks were
plentiful:
Bob Janes paid for the wonderful birthday song received
from the club, and also gave $26.50 to Foundation for his
birthday
Wendy Pratt was happy that Mike
Nygren could join us, and also happy to
have assisted with VIU’s MBA games
Douglas Anderson was happy for
another birthday
Joyce Smith was sad that the
weather is much colder than in Austra-
lia. Luckily, she’ll be off to Mexico on
Tuesday. No sympathy for you, Joyce!
Susie Stephens gave reminiscent bucks about the past
year.
Joan Ryan gave happy bucks that her grandson recently
turned 13, and sad bucks that husband Bruce’s kidneys are
having functional issues
Wayne Anderson gave
happy bucks on behalf of
Honorary Member Dale
Huck, who was instrumen-
tal in the original Bayview
School lunch.
Frank Shoemaker gave
happy bucks to be up
and around after his
recent hospitalization
Dave Hammond
gave happy bucks
that the Rose Bowl
parade was led by the
Rotary float (which
also won ‘best float’)
Egon Holzwarth gave a happy buck that he got free
parking at the Gabriola
ferry terminal
Table stakes were won by
Brent Barootes, and
Wendy Pratt’s draw at-
tempt for the Ace of Spades
was unsuccessful. The 50-
50 pot continues to grow.

Rotary Friendship Exchange
to Australia By Lucie Gosselin
Keith McFarlane introduced our own
Joyce Smith and husband Ron Willis as
today’s speakers. Joyce and Ron were
part of a team of 12 Rotarians and spouses
from our district who participated in a
Rotary Friendship Exchange to Australia
last November. Also from Nanaimo were
Graham and Vicki Calder from the Day-
break club. The exchange is between our
District 5020 and District 9650 in the south west part of
Australia. Members from 9650 will be reciprocating and
visiting our district in May 2017.
The Rotary Friendship Exchange is about fellowship and
sharing. It is Rotary's International exchange program for
Rotarians and their families. Participants experience other
cultures and build friendships by staying in the homes of
Rotary club members in another country. This program ad-
vances international understanding and peace through per-
sonal contact across borders while developing inter-club
relationships that lead to fellowship and service projects.
During their visit to Australia, Ron
& Joyce attended 4 Rotary meetings
in 12 days. The cities/clubs visited
were Coonabaraban, Tamworth,
Dorrigo and Port McQuarrie. They
spent an average of 3 days in each
city. Their host clubs made sure they
saw and participated in many local
attractions.
Some of the places they visited
included a dinosaur museum, a large observatory (the larg-
est in the world) and a performance by aboriginal dancers In
Coonabaraban, country music and exotic birds in Tam-
worth; a train and car museum and beautiful scenery in
Dorrigo which is on the Great Divide, a Koala hospital and
an evening Boat Cruise in Port McQuarrie. In each place,
they were hosted by various Rotarians and had many
chances for fellowship.
In addition to the fun stuff, they also visited a number of
Rotary projects. The one which impressed Joyce the most
was called Sailability which is a program to assist people
with disabilities participate in water sports.
Joyce gave many kudos to Linda Krahn who is with the
District Rotary Fellowship Committee for a well organized
trip.
Joyce finished by telling us about the proposed program
for the visitors next May. Our club and the Daybreak club
are responsible for the visitors. There will be 5 or 6 couples
so we need 5 or 6 host families plus a few back-up families
in case something comes up. The preliminary itinerary is:
May 22, 2017 – Meet the team at the top of the Malahat
and have lunch at Hilltop Café and then tour Cowichan
Bay and Cowichan Valley.
May 23, 2017 – fishing tour and alternative Seawalk
and shopping tour with lunch at the Dinghy Dock.
May 24, 2017 – Tour of VIU, lunch in Discovery Room
and then a joint Rotary party with both clubs at Joyce
and Ron’s house.
May 25, 2017 – Group moves to Comox and Cumber-
land. Meet new hosts in Coombs with lunch at
Cuckoo’s Nest.
Bruce Samson thanked the speakers for a most interesting
program and presented them with coveted Rotary pens.
