Message from the Presbyter..........

Dear Friends in Christ,

The responsibility of a son is more than that of a child. As we travel more with Jesus, He transforms us to a son. “God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father”, so you are no longer a slave, but a son, God has made you also an heir” (Gal 4:6, 7). It talks about the responsibility of a son. Before we were slaves to our basic instincts, but after becoming sons of God we need to learn how to put awayslavery and perform our task as responsible heirs of the kingdom of God.

The shortest and sweetest Christmas message in a capsule form is “For unto us a child is born and to us a son is given”. Child and Son are two expressions, which reveal the identity of the Christmas baby, Jesus. He is both the Child and the Son with regard to his human birth and divine incarnation.

He has been given to us as child and son, so that we become a child and a son to Him. The implication is that we need to turn and become like a child to enter into the kingdom of God and that we become God's son as we put our faith in Jesus.

A child learns from parents, believe their words, and trust them on all occasions. Recent incidences in India tend to teach an opposite message since parents become children's murderers and persecutors. But we have an assurance in God though human system conveys a different message: “If my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will receive me” (Ps 27:10). “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you.” (Isaiah 49:15). So God neverbreaks our trust when we lean on Him. Therefore as a child, we must sit at God's feet, learn from the Word of God, obey God's word in every respect and trust Jesus in all the ways of life. Then Jesus will purify us, set right our mind and heart and make us the children of God.

Christmas, to be meaningful, we must become a child of Godand then grow into sonship. We cannot become child of God unless and until Jesus is born in our hearts. This must be Christmas for us today. Jesus was born 2000 years ago so that he can be born in us. Jesus said to Nicodemus: “I tell you the truth, no-one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again”. Jesus came to make kingdom of God accessible to us. It is throughhim that we will be born again, a second time after the physical birth, to enter into the spiritual kingdom of God. This spiritual birth is necessary for us to be with God. Only Jesus can give this spiritual birth to us. Unless and until we are saved from our sinful passions and habits through spiritual birth, celebration of Christmas is meaningless.

I pray that this Christmas be a season of great joy for us as we are born into the spiritual kingdom of God. May God help us to walk with Him daily and overcome sinful passions so that we become responsible sons and daughters of God.

With love and prayers,

Rev. Varghese Enathickal V.Email: [email protected]

News & Notes

Previous Month Highlights:

Ecumenical Service at Vashi Marthoma Church.

We have celebrated union of Marthoma-CSI-CNI churches on November 3, Sunday. Our Church choir, along with members went to Marthoma Church in Vashi to celebrate unity Sunday. This is an expression of Christian unity we believe as achieved through Jesus Christ. Different churches are expressions of one single faith dimension in Jesus. Let this unity be a testimony to our faith in Jesus.

Fish Pickle Preparation

Fish pickle preparation was a family venture as parents, children and youths were present in Vashi farm house on Nov 10, Sunday after the worship service. Evangelist Mr. Arun George engaged children with songs and bible stories for sometime. Our women were all engaged in different activities of fish pickle preparation. Some men also joined in helping women and others supported them by their presence. Breakfast and lunch were served and the whole process of fish pickle preparation ended at 4:30pm. Mr. Jacob William was present in the spot till 6pm to windup all other settings.

Sunday School Sunday

Sunday school Sunday was celebrated on Nov 10, Sunday. Evangelist Arun George, who is presently assisting Rev. Sam Mathew K. in Parel and who worked as CSSM children's ministry delivered the message. He emphasized the importance of family prayer for a child to grow in a Christian environment and teachings. He also said that if children do not receive adequate Christian family environment, they will not be able to cope with changing life circumstances.

Harvest Festival/ Parish Day

Parish day and Harvest Festival was celebrated on Nov. 17, Sunday. The Holy Communion service was at 3pm. During the service, our church logo was officially introduced by our senior most members, Mr. C. G. Thomas and Mr. Abraham Mathan T. A special prayer was offered to those who are above 65 years by Rev. N. C. David. Children (Ms. Manna Winford, Ms. Sarah B. George and Mr. Vishal Stephens), who scored 80% and above in their board examinations were honoured. Prizes were distributed to them by Rev. Reni Philip, Vakola Church Vicar. Winners of church sports day, conducted in the month of June, also were given prizes.

Rev. Reni Philip of the vakola church delivered the message. He exhorted that harvest festival is an occasion of joy and thanksgiving. We must get rid of our haughty attitude to celebrate harvest before God. Also, what we give must come from a dedicated and obedient heart. We must show our concern to the poor as God has blessed us materially. An example he shared from Lord's Table was that a person must make sure that others along with him received their part before s/he eats.

Auction was begun with a word of prayer by Rev. Reni Philip and ended with prayer by Rev. N. C. David. Fish pickle and the basket, which were brought before the altar auctioned at first. Auction was a great success and everybody participated well. There were food stalls organized by women and youth groups. Fish pickle and food sale were in full swing and got empty much earlier than it was expected.

Star of Bethlehem (Four-Pointed Star) (P. K. Abraham; Source: Internet)

The four-pointed star symbol in Christianity is usually styled to resemble a cross. Also known as the Star of Bethlehem or natal star, this star represents both Jesus' birth and the purpose for which he was born. It is used especially for church decoration during the Advent and Christmas seasons.

Related Bible Verses

I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel. (Numbers 24:17, NIV)

In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, "Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage." (Matthew 2:1-2, NRSV)

Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage." When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. (Matthew 2:7-10, NRSV)

Star of the Creator (Six-Pointed Star) (P. K. Abraham; Source: Internet)

The six-pointed star is the Creator's Star or Star of Creation. Its six points stand for the six days of creation, and are also represent the six attributes of God: power, wisdom, majesty, love, mercy and justice.

This star is the same as the Star of David, a symbol of Judaism modern-day.Israel. The six-pointed star is of ancient origin and is used in many other religions with a variety of meanings.

Star of Redemption (Eight-Point Star) (P. K. Abraham; Source: Internet)

The eight-pointed star is the Star of Redemption or Regeneration and represents baptism. Eight is traditionally the number of regeneration, and thus many baptismal fonts have anoctagonal base.

Providing added significance is the assumption that Jesus was circumcised and named when he was eight days old (the traditional Jewish practice); baptism is seen as the New Testament equivalent of circumcision.

Finally, eight persons were saved in Noah's ark, which is another Old Testament parallel of baptism.

Related Bible Verses

For we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another. But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope ofeternal life. (Titus 3:3-6, NKJV).

When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God commanded him. (Genesis 21:4, NIV).

...they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God. (1 Peter 3:18-22, ESV).

Nine-Point Star(P. K. Abraham; Source: Internet)

The nine-pointed star symbolizes the nine fruits of the Spirit listed in the Epistle to the Galatians.

This star is sometimes shown with the Latin initials for each of the fruits (charitas, gaudium, pax, longanimitas, benignitas, bonitus, fides, mansuetudo and continentia) placed within the points.

The nine-pointed star is also the symbol of the Baha'i Faith.

Related Bible Verse

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. (Gal. 5:22, NIV)

Twelve-Pointed Star(P. K. Abraham; Source: Internet)

A twelve-pointed star may be used to represent the twelve tribes of Israel or the twelve apostles.

It may also be used at Epiphany, the twelfth day of Christmas, on which the church celebrates the manifestation of Christ as the Son of God.
