ClimatologistS Find Pitchers and CatchersReporting Further South Every SpringWASHINGTON—Warning that swift climate action wasneeded if local populations were to survive, a study releasedFriday by the EPA revealed an alarming trend of MajorLeague Baseball pitchers and catchers reporting furthersouth for spring training every year. “It wasn’t long ago thatpitchers and catchers could be spotted as far north asGeorgiaand the Carolinas, but now, due to complex shifts in ourplanet’s climate, they can only be found in the southernreaches of Florida and Arizona,” read the report in part, cautioning that by 2030, global warming may push baseballspring training as far south as the Caribbean or CentralMexico. “People in the southern United States have longwitnessed the beauty of migrating pitchers and catchers intheir towns every spring, but their absence is just another sideeffect of rapidly changing ecosystems. It’s a shame that thenextgenerationofAmericansmayneverknowaworldwherespring training exists.” The study also warned that ifprevailing climate trends continue, the baseball season willbe shortened to a two-week period at the end of April.

This month our crack technology crew evaluated the newest of the Kodak line of fine cameras, the "Kodak SFx DigitalCamera". Kodak touted this camera as a budget camera for the masses. The camera lives up to the budget cost but doesnot deliver the pictures it has promised. This camera has a dual processor that was supposed to double the clarity of thepictures, especially in the portrait range, but for some unknown reason it seems to transpose the faces on the bodies. Wethink the dual processors are not in complete sync with the two lenses.

To prove our point we took the following shots of residents for the Photo Directory and got substandard results. See foryourself...

The Bottom Line: We cannot endorse this camera!

Bee Friendly!Where would we be without bees? As far as important species go, they are top of the list. If the beesdisappear, strawberries, avocados, coffee and most other plant foods will disappear. They are criticalpollinators: they pollinate 70 of the around 100 crop species that feed 90% of the world. Honey bees areresponsible for $30 billion a year in crops.

That’s only the start. We may lose allthe plants that bees pollinate, all of theanimals that eat those plants and so onup the food chain. Which means aworld without bees could struggle tosustain the global human populationof 7 billion. Our supermarkets wouldhave half the amount of fruit andvegetables. It gets worse. We are losing bees at analarming rate.Continued on page 10

We could still use about twopeople to help out with poolduties!

Bees continued from page 9Over the past 50 years, the amount of crops that depend on pollinators (i.e. fruit, vegetables, seeds, nutsand oilseeds) has tripled. Bees play an important role.We have checked and the pesticides we use here at the Villas are on the "Bee Friendly" side and areapplied in such amaner. What else canwedo? Many residents have alreadyplantedwild floweringplantsto helpwith the bee and butterfly populations. Here are some bee friendly plants that can be incorporatedinto the plantings around your condo.

• Crocus, hyacinth, borage, calendula, and wild lilac provide enticing spring blooms in a bee garden.• Bees feast on bee balm, cosmos, echinacea, snapdragons foxglove, and hosta in the summer.• For fall, zinnias, sedum, asters, witch hazel and goldenrod are late bloomers that will tempt foragers.

When buying plants, please, read the labels on the plants and DO NOT purchase plants treated withNeoniconaoid. Bees take the pollen back to the hive and feed it to the brood causing the colony tocollapse! We all can lend a hand to the disappearing species. It just takes a little effort and it can make such a bigimpact!
