What do you understand by inclusion? Inclusion is truly a way of life.

To be included is a right of every child. In the field of education „inclusion‟ and

„integration‟ are often used as synonyms. But there is a subtle difference.

Integration means placing of children with special needs in ordinary Schools. But in pro-

gressive Schools , inclusion refers to all children who face some barrier of learning. It is

the ability of a School to deal with differently abled children and their needs, in a regular

School system, and teaching all children to accept and understand the difference. Inclu-

sion requires support and cooperation from the students, the teachers and mainly the par-

ents.

Parents play a very important role in sensitizing a child creating the right psychological

ambience. In the words of Stacia Tauscher “we worry about a child will become tomor-

row, yet we forget that he is some one today” .

I would like every parents and teachers, educators and facilitators to once again read

Abraham Lincoln‟s world famous letter to his son‟s teacher . It conveys a wealth of

meaning and it is relevant even in today‟s fast paced life of the 21st Century .

SAVE ARTISANS TO SAVE ART

CELEBRITY OF THE MONTH: RATAN KHANNA

South City International School was proud to host a workshop under the aegis of Mr.Ratan Khanna documentary film

maker and musician on the 9th of December 2011. The workshop was attended by the students and all the teachers of the

Secondary Section. Singlehandedly Mr.Khanna held the audience spellbound with his master rendition of popular Eng-

lish folk songs, „Baul‟ gaan and even Rabindrasangeet. On display was an impressive array of musical instruments

which he played one by one with elan. They were the flute or banshees, ektara (single stringed), do tara (double

stringed), dubki and various others that intrigued and entertained all of us alike. Here is a brief excerpt of an interview

that I had with him –

Q – Please tell us something about yourself.

A – I work with the marginalised artistes of Bengal to preserve their traditional heritage in terms of music and craft of

Bengal which is universally appreciated.

Q – What is your message to the new generation?

A – My message to the new generation is to cultivate a conscious interest and taste in our rich traditional culture. One

must know one‟s roots and be aware and proud of it.

Q – How do you spread this awareness?

A – In order to preserve and protect our heritage I do a lot of field work by travelling to villages and districts and inter-

acting with students in various schools and giving them live demonstrations and lecture to enhance their interest.

SOUTH CITY INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL CELEBRATES ANNUAL DAY “Education is not filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”- William Butler Yeats. The constant endeavor to take learning beyond

the confines of a classroom and

make it an enjoyable experience for the students of South City International School , was consequently exhibited through a

wide array of events staged on the Annual Day on 20th December 2011 in the school auditorium . The school organized

a wide variety of carefully selected events , an endeavor to amalgamate the best of the East and the West for the benefit of

the learners.

In keeping with tradition, the function began with a soulful rendition of the song „Amazing Grace by the school choir which en-

thralled the audience followed by the felicitation of the Chief Guest , the Japanese Consul General Mr Kawaguchi and

Mrs. Kawaguchi who had been kind enough to grace the occasion. The lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the Principal,

along with the distinguished guests and the recitation of Vedic hymns created a heavenly ambience.

Then the Principal of South City International School Mr. John Andrew Bagul addressed the gathering, highlighting the achieve-

ments of the students not only in academics but also in the field of Sports and extra-curricular activities. This was followed by

the motivational speech of the Chief guest focusing especially on the relationship that Japan and India enjoy. The mel-

lifluous voice of the Japanese students hailing from Japanese Supplementary School still ring in our ears.

The cultural programme for the day provided a peep into the country's rich cultural mosaic showcasing the creative abilities of the

students of the Primary Section , Tagore‟s TASHER DESH was staged commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Tagore.

This was an endeavor to provide the learners with “wings and roots”… wings to soar fearlessly while being firmly rooted to our cul-

tural ethos . The scintillating performance of the students in vibrant costumes, the gorgeous stage set up, a heart-

warming, captivating musical treat along with narration in English and fruition of the dance drama enthralled the audience

and transported them to the world of cards. While the primary choir invoked the blessings of the Almighty the inno-

cent faces exuded divine grace which charmed all and sundry. The foot tapping rhythm of the French song , the

dulcet tones of the cello in the Korean song and the poignant feeling that originated from the movements of DANCE

PASTROLAS left the audience spellbound and made them wonder about the eclectic blend of music and the essence of

the whole gamut of events from different corner of the world.

The senior students had put up an English play ,” The never ending Christmas story “ an adaptation from „The Gift of

the Magi” . The enactment of the students warmed by sentiment and humor, filled with lilting songs, and certain to please audi-

ences of all ages brought a laugh to the throat and a misty tear to the eye of young or old.

This exquisite little story beautifully captured the spirit of the season. It's one for the whole family to enjoy as, with warmth and

wit, it imparts the age old lesson about it being better to give than to receive. The celebrations concluded with a vote of thanks, fol-

lowed by the National Anthem.

Overall the 2nd Annual Day function of SCIS turned out to be grand success and was appreciated by all and sundry.

The Creator house of the Primary Section presented their assembly on „Vedic Mathe-

matics‟ on the 28th of November, 2011.

The assembly started with the reading of a „sloka‟ from the „Bhagwad Gita‟ followed by

a song sung by the children on the various uses of signs and shapes in Maths. It contin-

ued with a power point presentation explaining the concept of Vedic Maths and the

easier and faster methods of solving sums by using the different „sutras‟ or formulae.

What is Vedic Mathematics ?

Vedic mathematics is the name given to the ancient system of mathematics which was rediscovered from the Vedas.

It’s a unique technique of calculations based on simple principles and rules , with which any mathematical problem - be it arithmetic, algebra, geometry or trigonometry can be solved mentally.

Date - 1.12.11

Class – I A and I B

Theme – Winter Season

On 1.12.11 students of class IA and I B had a combined assembly on winter season.

The assembly started with the prayer song. The children then high lightened the beauty and charms of the winter season, the beautiful flow-

ers, the dew drops on the leaves in the misty mornings, the happiness of the farmers, the fruits that grows in this season.

The children also presented a dance to welcome the festive mood of the winter season.

The assembly ended with the news and thought for the day which stressed specially on the note that we are fortunate that we have food and

warm clothing to protect us from cold winter but here we all need to spare a thought and a prayer for those who are poor and homeless all

over the world.

To create interest in the students about General Awareness and to be

updated about the important news, the students of class 3B have taken

up a project to create awareness amongst students by means of

gathering information from newspapers and other magazines and

displaying them in an attractive manner on the back of old chart

papers thus setting an example of recycling/reusing old materials.

Students of other classes are then invited to read these news cuttings

during break time thus developing their interest also.

This is just a stepping stone in creating awareness amongst the

students about the environment and at the same time develop the habit

of reading newspapers and magazines.

WORLD HUMAN RIGHTS DAY

Creator House presented World Human Rights Day on the 5th of December 2011 as their topic

for their Morning Assembly. It comprised of an informative PPT depicting the various kinds of

Human Rights and how they are violated and why one needs to be vigilant to protect them.

This was accompanied by a song by Bob Marley „Stand Up for Your Rights‟ followed by a

candle light group march to show solidarity with the downtrodden and the oppressed of the

world.
