On the Day of Pentecost, the disciples of Jesus Christ stationed at Grace-St. Luke’s joined the church catholic (universal) in singing the famous, exceptional, and inspirational hymn, “Come down, O Love divine.” (There are many glorious offerings of this great hymn online.) Members of the body of Christ, the Church, sang its brilliant text

by Bianco de Siena (1367-1434) to the tune, Down Ampney composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958). When it comes to Pentecost and any chance to celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit, I turn to this hymn. Why?

“Come down, O Love divine” rejoices in the imparting of the Spirit of God to all who have been baptized in the name of the Trinity and with water. Five new Christians were baptized at GSL during the Sunday 10:30 a.m. liturgy after our Catechesis of the Good Shepherd children and catechists lit seven red candles before the altar to signify the seven gifts of the Spirit (Isaiah 11:1-3a): Wisdom, Understanding, Fear of God, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, and Piety. The morning and evening liturgies revived souls to the fact that the Spirit, the wisdom of God, lives forever within each of us, and therefore calls us to live boldly with the fire of the Spirit.

The annual Day of Pentecost in the life of the Church unapologetically communicates that the Spirit is not to be taken for granted. It is to be the daily energy, passion, and radicalness that our Lord trusts will lead our lives as followers of Jesus. Rooted in the love of God, the Spirit is the source from which we are to lead and serve, faithfully offering our abundant time, talent, and treasure to build up the kingdom of God through and beyond life at Grace-St. Luke’s.

Now that we have entered Ordinary Time (the Monday after Pentecost through the Saturday before the First Sunday of Advent) on the Church Year Calendar, daily opportunities are ahead for us to embrace and to live with the fire of the Spirit as vessels of God. In so doing, our lives and the world will be changed to the glory of God who loves us unconditionally

Living with The Spirit’s FireThe Rev. Ollie V. Rencher, Rector

and calls us to show the same with our neighbors. On our long summer and fall journey to the season of Advent, may this hymn become a prayer of gratitude for earthly and eternal life in the Spirit. Come down, O Love divine, seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with thine own ardor glowing; O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing. | O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming. | And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling; for none can guess its grace, till Love create a place wherein the Holy Spirit makes a dwelling. Amen.

Godspeed and blessings as we try,– The Reverend Ollie V. Rencher, Rector

Director of Music and Organist Search Process UpdateDear Grace–St. Luke’s Parish and School Communities:

As follow-up to the May 9 announcement and June 2 retirement of Wesley Emerson from the post of GSL Organist-Choirmaster, I am grateful for the dedicated service of Interim Organist-Choirmaster, Debbie Smith. Debbie has agreed to serve while I work with a search advisory team to assist me with recruiting a Director of Music and Organist who ideally would be hired, from the more than 30 applications received, for appointment by September. Upon such hiring, Debbie will be appointed Assistant Organist and Choirmaster to support the Director of Music and Organist.

Meanwhile, please join me in appreciation of the cross-representation of persons from the Parish and the School now serving as my Search Advisory Team: Grant Adams, John Baur, Alice Crow, Natalie Davis, Patricia Gray, Jim Greer, Sidney Hickey, Linda Khumalo, Brenda Maguire, Lucius McGehee, Arthur Nave, Leslie Reddick, and Dan Swanson. They, along with Wardens, Clergy, and Staff, will have particular opportunities to learn about and/or interact with candidates throughout the process. A majority of their work will occur whenever finalists visit for interviews which will consist of small group meetings, a brief organ recital followed by hymn and service music playing, conducting a choir rehearsal, fellowship with choristers, and important time to explore Memphis.

If you have questions or comments along the way, please contact me directly. During this prayerful process, I ask you prayers for the Search Advisory Team and me, and for those who have expressed an interest in serving as the next lead parish musician at GSL. Stay tuned for another update.

In thanksgiving for the faith that binds us,

Ollie+

Exodus: GSL Parish Retreat

Sept. 27-29gracestlukes.org/events/

parish-weekend/Exodus is a Friday to Sunday excursion for GSL parishio-ners to The Gray Center, an Episcopal Camp and Confer-ence Center north of Can-

ton, Mississippi. In the beautiful lakeside setting of Camp Bratton-Green, participants can connect with God and fellow parishioners, and do as much or as little as they want. Retreat activities include canoeing, fishing, campfire, zipline, pool and lake swimming, disc golf, yoga, hiking and exercise trails, and more for all ages. Indoor and outdoor chapel worship is enhanced by a guest musician and officiated by one of our priests who also leads meditations and informal conversations throughout the weekend.

Most people arrive to Exodus late afternoon on Friday for dinner followed by a night of fellowship and play, and remain through the closing Eucharist by the lakeside on Sunday morn-ing. Saturday is full of daytime group and optional activities and nighttime of more relaxed fun including a bonfire. House-holds of children and youth stay together at Camp Bratton-Green in rustic cabins (bunkbeds) around Rose Hill Lake. Scholarships Enhance

Educational Opportunities for Deserving Women

A Step Ahead Foundation, a GSL Outreach Grantee, strives to improve educational, economic, and health outcomes for Shelby County women by providing access to the most effective reversible methods of birth control so they can plan their futures and achieve their full potential. On Tuesday, June 4th, ASAF sponsored a reception to honor recipients of this year’s ASAF scholarships. The organization awarded $300,000 to 82 Memphis area women who are attending college or trade school in 2019. Since ASAF began the program in 2014, the organization has awarded $1 million dollars to 160 young women. For more information on how GSL parishioners can support the scholarship program, please visit www.astepaheadfoundation.org.

Those parishioners who are interested in learning more about ASAF, are invited to attend their Lunch and Learn on August 20th, from 11:30-1:00. Parishioners can also volunteer at ASAF. Their next Volunteer Training is on July 20 from 10:00-11:30. To register for either event, go to https://www.eventbrite.com/o/a-step-ahead-foundation-4463693655. Outreach Ministry

This summer begins MIFA’s inaugural annual event, Our City, Our Story. Based on MIFA's founding values and the issues addressed by its programs, the event is designed to inspire, foster unity, and forge community conversation. For this year’s Our City, Our Story, MIFA is offering our community an opportunity to explore the realities of homelessness through a series of three events culminating in September. It will highlight award-winning author and life-changing advocate for the homeless Kathy Izard of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Community-Wide Read of The Hundred Story Home

by Kathy Izard In a shared reading experience, Memphis opens the same book and closes it in greater harmony using Kathy Izard’s inspirational book The Hundred Story Home - A Memoir about Finding Faith in Ourselves and Something Bigger.

Purchase the book for a 10% discount from novel. bookstore at 387 Perkins Extended in the Laurelwood Shopping Center or borrow from Memphis Public Libraries.

For more information on Our City, Our Story visit https://community.mifa.org/our-city-our-story.

About the book: The Hundred Story Home captures Kathy Izard's search for purpose and how a combination of doubt, faith, and doing the right thing led to something extraordinary. Author, Kathy Izard, owned a graphic design business and volunteered at the community soup kitchen, but she still felt unfulfilled. When a formerly homeless man pointed out that what they really need is a home, Kathy realized her calling and closed her design business in two months. She joined the staff of the Urban Ministry Center and developed Charlotte’s only Housing First program for the chronically homeless.
