I encourage you to find what works to help you engage Scripture on a daily basis. A short question I ask myself many days after I read ScriptureLord, how does these words speak to my life and what is happening today? Give Faithfully – Give yourself faithfully to God this year. I do not know what that may look like for you. Perhaps it is using your talents in a whole new way to serve; perhaps faithfully using your resources to help make something happen; perhaps it is preparing yourself for a new season of life. Pastoral Reflections from Dr. Tony Lankford

I am not sure what you may be resolving to do this coming year…loss weight, get

healthy, save money, make a big decision, be better at x,y, or z. Please know I do

hope and pray for this year to be one full of peace, joy, and goodness in your life.

Regardless if you made resolutions or not, may I encourage you to reflect over these

below, whatever you hope for 2018 to look like, I am confident these can only help.

Pray Regularly – 1 Thessalonians ask followers of Jesus to pray without ceasing

(5:17). This scripture, I believe, encourages believers to be in an attitude of prayer

throughout the day. I, like you, have my default response to situations good and bad.

What would it look like if you or I tried to have prayer as our first response setting

throughout the day?

Engage Scripture Daily – In today’s world there are many ways to have Scripture

as part of your daily life….devotionals, apps on your phone, social media posts, or

just opening the Bible with a cup of coffee. I encourage you to find what works to

help you engage Scripture on a daily basis. A short question I ask myself many

days after I read Scripture…Lord, how does these words speak to my life and what

Give Faithfully – Give yourself faithfully to God this year. I do not know what

that may look like for you. Perhaps it is using your talents in a whole new way to

Happy New Year!!! I hope that your 2017 ended on a great note with family

and friends.

There are few events that are as fun as the youth Christmas party. Every year we get together for dinner, fellowship, and a white elephant gift exchange. It is always amazing getting to see what people come up with for a white elephant gift. Some of my favorites were: a top hat that looked like a chimney with Santa stuck at the top, a drinking glass in the shape of a boot, a mac-n-cheese maker, and a rubber band shooter. We laughed, we hung out, and we had a great time.

Parents and Grandparents, please remember to let me know if you and/or your student is interested in going to the Dominican Republic for our mission trip this summer, even if you aren’t 100% sure, or are needing some serious fundraising help, let me know. We are working on planning out fundraisers for 2018 and will get information out about them as soon as they are available.

It is truly impossible to overstate the awesome work that you, as this congregation, do for our youth. Whether it is through prayer, encouraging words, or just taking a minute to get to know them when you see them around the church. Specifically, I would be remiss if I didn’t thank all the many volunteers who helped with the youth in some capacity throughout 2017. I am sure I will forget someone, so please forgive me if I do, but here goes: Blake Hightower, Susannah Mize, Sharon Proudfoot, Tom and Susie Arnold, Jim and Lisa Jinkins, Barbara Hanzalik, Anne Packard, Chris and Nikki Pope, Garrow and Wendy Alberson, Fern Thompson, Monica Colquitt, Sam and Christine Norris, Edwin and Anna McGlamory, Kurt and Paige Browning, Lon and Joy Lewis, Adam Lewis, Kevin Pearce, the FBCSSI staff and, of course, my family! Thank you for making 2017 an awesome year. Here’s to an even better 2018!!

Season of Grace

Happy New Year! As we begin the 2018 year may we reflect on Scripture to help us prepare. In Matthew 22:37-40, Jesus’

summarization of the Law and Prophets aid us in how to prioritize our lives. He says, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.” As we are making New Year’s resolutions and pondering what this year may bring may we seek God and strive to reflect the message of Christ. I am looking forward to what God is going to do here at First Baptist this year!
