PRESIDENT’S JANUARY/FEBRUARY MESSAGE Editor’s Notes Page 3

Happy New Year South Florida Region Members!

Even though this month’s January/February newsletter is small, you are

receiving several inserts or attachments NEEDED TO BEGIN 2017: a survey form and several registrations for our three upcoming car shows, Art Deco on January 14 and 15, the judged Mercedes-Benz of Coral Gables Biltmore Way Classic Car Show on March 5, and the Deering Estate Vintage Auto Show for pre-60’s vehicles on March 12. I certainly hope that you will complete and return the survey and sign up for as many car shows as possible.

You have paid your national and club dues. You need to think about the sense of being in the antique car hobby and how you can be a viable part of our well established car club. It’s okay to say you want to have some fun with your car. We have several car shows and events where you can showcase your prized possession. We have events that are on a Saturday or Sunday. Most are free; others are not that expensive. Networking with other club members is a great way to find places and resources for your antique and modern vehicle if you need help, especially if your vehicle needs parts or a specialized service. Our members are an eclectic bunch of car enthusiasts. They span several decades of ages, work a full-time job or are retired, have no antiques to a multitude of them, some are mechanically astute while others have good contacts, some are reserved and others are very sociable. The comparisons and contrasts are lengthy. Hopefully you can see a pattern.

In closing, all I can say for sure is that if you do not participate in any of our club activities, you are the one who is missing out. We are not a perfect club, but we are working on it. Be a part of our journey. Happy Motoring,

Jean

Happy New Year! Can you believe it is 2017 already? Whenever I see a 7 and a date, it brings back memories of 1957, the great year of fins on cars, especially the 1957 Chevy. Now that we're into the New Year and making our New Year's resolutions, be sure to include all those little things your cars need.

We had a very nice Holiday Party with a gift exchange. Thanks to all who helped put it together, especially Manny and Millie Garcia, who both won the Most Valuable Members of the year 2016. Manny and Millie really worked hard all year on all events as well as provided us with snacks at our regular meetings. Thanks again Manny and Millie, an award well deserved.

Another individual who has helped us out at many of our events and was not even a member was Kenneth Hilton. It was my honor to appoint him as an honorary member to our club. Welcome aboard Ken. I would like to get another dozen of our hard workers to assist our club.

I invite all of our members to get more involved with our club, come to our regular meetings, meet other car enthusiasts, enjoy our lectures and join us at our events. Our next event will be Art Deco Weekend on South Beach, January 14th and 15th. Have a great year and be safe. Keep them rolling.

Ron Mitro, President

BOARD MINUTES: December 6, 2016 (Draft) Page 4

The A.A.C.A. South Florida Region Board meeting of Tuesday, December 6th, 2016 was held at the home of Board Member, Bob Squier. The meeting was called to Order by: Ron Mitro, President, at 7:00 PM. Minutes Presented by: Ira Shapiro In attendance: Cindy Endres, Chico Goldsmith 2nd Vice President, Frank Garcia, Manny Garcia 1st Vice President, Millie Garcia, Jean Hawa, Tomás Hernandez, Ron Mitro President, Gary Shanock, Ira Shapiro Secretary, Bob Squier and Philip Williams.

First Order of Business: Accepting the minutes of last month’s board meeting. The Chair asked if everyone present had read the minutes of last month’s board meeting; if so and if there were no questions, comments or corrections, would someone move to accept the minutes as posted. Manny Garcia made a motion to accept the November Minutes as presented. The motion was seconded by Tomás Hernandez. Having no further discussion, the motion was voted on and passed.

Second Order of Business: Treasurer’s Report – Since Mel Mann, the club treasurer was not present at last month’s Board Meeting, this month he is presenting both the October and November reports. A copy of the October 31 report was distributed to the Board for their review. Mel Mann then presented his report, Jean Hawa moved to accept the October report as presented and was seconded by Tomás Hernandez; having no further discussion or comment the motion was voted on and approved. Mel Mann then presented the November 30 Report as a copy of the November report was distributed to the Board for their review. As part of the report Mel stated that the club had collected $400.00 for reservations to the holiday party and, as agreed by the Board, that monies will be donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Jean Hawa moved to accept the November report as presented. The motion was seconded by Bob Squier; having no further discussion or comment the motion was voted on and approved.

Third Order of Business: Membership Report – Presented by Philip Williams, Membership Chairman. As of the December Board Meeting our membership stands at 147 families of which 56 are renewals. Philip reported that this is in keeping with previous years’ membership renewal rate. General Meeting: Ron Mitro explained that Daniel Botilla our guest speaker for last month had gotten ill and was hospitalized for a period. That explained his unannounced absence at the meeting. Chico Goldsmith included that he is working on a fellow who will bring his two military trucks and talk to us about their restoration. The discussion moved toward poor attendance at the general meeting and what to do about increasing it. The consensus among the Board is having guest speakers at the general meetings as a key factor to increasing attendance at the meetings. Additionally, it was discussed that

all board members should think about possible speakers to invite. Ron Mitro added that board members could also be guest speakers. Progressive Dinner: Manny Garcia began his report by thanking Bob Squier and Ken Kurtz for hosting the appetizer course as well as thanking Ira and Susan Shapiro for the dinner course and Jean and Maurice Hawa for the dessert course. Manny reported that the event was successful despite the attendance of only 41 people. Manny Garcia then presented a budget for next year’s event. After discussing the budget and determining that it would be $44.00 per person, the budget was tabled for later in the meeting and then for next month’s meeting.

Veterans Day Parade: Ron Mitro opened a discussion about the low attendance by our club at the parade. The discussion established several things to explain the attendance. The first and principle point was, the event was not a club event, the club was only promoting it to our members. The second point being the parade was scheduled on a work day and lastly, many of our members don’t generally participate in parades because of the chance of overheating.

Holiday Party: Manny Garcia reported that the event was successful, despite an attendance of only 42 people. Manny then presented a budget for next year’s event at $2,450.00. Manny further suggested that we should not host events at the same place twice in a row. The floor was then opened to discussion about the event. Several items came up that might explain the reduced attendance, the food choices and the feeling that in general members are not particularly friendly to new comers. Additionally, it was mentioned that some attendees had brought what appeared to be recycled gifts and that was not fair to the recipients. Mel Mann suggested we consider changing the format to a fully catered picnic, allowing the members to bring their cars and families. After more discussion, the following was agreed upon: the holiday party needs to be organized at the beginning of the year to provide for more optional locations, all board members should think about possible venues and bring them to Manny Garcia’s attention, participants in Memory Lane should be given invitations to attend the holiday party at the club’s expense; and a formal event may be the answer for next year. Further discussion was tabled for next month’s meeting.

Art Deco Weekend: Mel Mann reported that the 2017 Art Deco Show will be like last year’s event. There will be no parade. The show field will run from 5th Street to 10th Street. Cars for Saturday will be 25 years and older with no other restrictions. On Sunday, the vehicles will be 25 years and older in factory original condition or restored to factory specification, and no Hot Rods, Modified or Street Rods. Trophies will be awarded on both days. Holiday Party- (cont. from page 1): by the reading of “A Visit from St. Nicholas” as read by Ken Kurtz. We hope everyone ended up with something fun, useful, or tasty. But that wasn’t the only gift: Ira and Susan Shapiro were the lucky winners of the drawing for a weekend at the Costa del Este Resort, generously donated by Luis and Maria Quevedo.

Thanks again to Manny and Millie, and best wishes for a happy holiday season and a prosperous and safe New Year.

BOARD MINUTES (continued from page 4)

Volunteer Hosts for Board Meetings: Jean Hawa asked board members to sign up to host the monthly board meetings. Mel Mann brought up the issue of increasing the board meeting dinner budget. The Board has grown to 18 members. Mel Mann made a motion that the dinner budget be increased to $180.00; the motion was seconded by Ira Shapiro. After considerable discussion, the motion was voted and approved.

Other Business: Mel Mann reported on behalf of Andy Levy that the Coral Gables Show was on schedule. The event will be March 5th, 2017. Mercedes-Benz of Coral Gables will be the show supporter.

Jean Hawa reported that the Deering Estate Show is set for March 12th, 2017. Mercedes-Benz of Cutler Bay will be the show supporter.

Ira Shapiro reported on the success of our club members providing cars to the Vizcaya Halloween Gala and the Vizcaya Gala Party. All of this has lead to further discussion with Vizcaya to present a special show and lecture for the Vizcaya Members. Ira will report further as discussions develop.

Ron Mitro proposed that the club extend a membership to Ken Hilton for all the work he has done for our club. He must become a national member at his own expense. The board approved unanimously.

Sunshine: Jean Hawa reported that all the members are well and there was no need for a Sunshine Report. With no further club business, Ron Mitro thanked Bob Squier and Ken Kurtz for hosting the meeting.

Adjournment: Ron made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 8:26 PM. The motion was unanimously seconded and approved.

Page 6 TURKEY ROD RUN

Annual Turkey Rod Run in Daytona Beach November 24 –27, 2016

Submitted by Alex Fardales

As many invaded department stores throughout the U.S on Black Friday, we car guys invaded the Daytona International Speedway for the annual Turkey Rod Run, which has become as much a Thanksgiving tradition as turkey dinner!

This year, with well over 7000 cars displayed, there were some surprises from our 60’s past. One of which was a display of some television replicas as the Monkees’ Mobile, the Munsters Coach and DRAGULA. Although these cars were TV replicas, the owner of The Munsters coach and DRAGULA was as real as you and me. Butch Patrick, the actor who played Eddie Munster was there signing autographs, shaking hands, and greeting everyone who remembered the show.

One vehicle that was NOT a replica and used on the actual TV show was the Black Beauty #2 used in the 1966 to 1967 television show "The Green Hornet" starring Bruce Lee and Van Williams. The owner of this spectacular vehicle, Karl Kirchner, was gracious enough to allow me to get up close and personal with the Black Beauty. This car was built by Dean Jefferies, a very popular and well known custom car builder of the 1960’s who recently passed away. Jefferies built two Black Beauties for the TV show, and they are both in existence today. The #1 car is in Los Angeles, and the #2 car was being displayed at this year’s event. Mr. Kirchner lives in South Carolina.

Enjoy these pictures. I’m already making plans for next year.

Below: I was happy to catch up to my South Florida friends, Yovanna, Tomás, yours truly, Manny and Millie.
