GUIDANCE CORNER

There are a number of important dates coming up very soon for 7th and 8th grade parents and students. For 8th grade parents Eighth grade parents should have received a paper with three important field trips listed. The first trip is to tour WMHS on Feb 13th. Students will get a chance to tour the campus, talk with administrators and teachers and have an opportunity to eat lunch there instead of at WMS. School lunch that day will be pizza from Tony’s. Students will use their student numbers and pay for lunch just like they would over here. If students would prefer to pack their own lunch they can do that as well. The second trip on April 5th is to Valley Career and Technical Center’s Information Fair where students can see the various programs and participate in some hands on activities as well for about an hour. The third trip on May 16th is to Blue Ridge Community College to tour the campus and learn about all of the options including dual enrollment courses. Last year we were part of a pilot program that went to BRCC and the trip was so successful they are offering it to all middle schools in the area and providing a free lunch. The paper that went home was an OPT OUT option only. You only sign and return the form if you do not want your child to attend any of these trips. The high school is also hosting another information night for you to ask any questions on February 27th at 6:30pm at WMHS. High school counselors will be available. Course requests for 9th grade will go home in report cards on March 20th. For 7th grade parents Beginning February 12th, students who are interested in taking a foreign language in 8th grade will be able to come to the counseling office and pick up a foreign language paper to be filled out, signed and returned. Students who return their forms will take a Foreign Language Aptitude Test at the end of the month. There will be a Parent Night on Tuesday, February 20th to learn about foreign language and Algebra opportunities in 8th grade and the selection process at 6:30pm at WMS in the cafeteria. There will be foreign language forms available at the meeting. The deadline to return a form to take the foreign language test will be on Wednesday, Feb 21st.
