They returned filled with inspiration about what was possible in their teaching. Students had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the culture and life of these two wonderful countries. Climbing the Spanish steps, visiting the Par- thenon and then having a gelato – what better way to spend a morning, for example. While students and parents would know this, its not unreasonable to shout it from the roof tops once again, that the enormous workload and responsibility associated with these study tours is appreciated. Katryce Nealan, HT History and the coordinator, was relieved that all went well. She had invested so, so much in this excursion. We are fortunate that she, and the other teach- ers, gave up family time before and during the trip, and even though they too had an opportunity that was a true adventure, there was no down time to relax with the respon- sibility to care for 29 young people. They had to be on” 24/7. Thank you once again to our wonderful staff who do these things for students.

Intrepid travellers return

Weary and jetlagged, but over the moon, twenty nine students and their four teachers – Ms Kartyce Nealon, Ms Cath Kenna, Ms Olwen Higgins and Mr John Wright - returned from their History study tour of Italy and Germany in the school holidays. This was our first History tour in decades and certainly was well worth the enormous effort made to get this trip “on the road”. Taking in such sites in Naples as Pompeii, Herculaneum, the Villa of Apolloni-us, in Rome the Forum and Colosseum, for example, in Berlin the Branden-burg Gates, Check Point Charley, the Berlin Wall and more, students and teachers were in awe. Up until now, these world heritage listed sites had only been seen in textbooks or on a computer screen. Many of the teachers have been teaching for years, having, as well, studied History at university, but still they learned many new things. They returned filled with inspiration about what was possible in their teaching. Students had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the culture and life of these two wonderful countries. Climbing the Spanish steps, visiting the Par-thenon and then having a gelato – what better way to spend a morning, for example. While students and parents would know this, it’s not unreasonable to shout it from the roof tops once again, that the enormous workload and responsibility associated with these study tours is appreciated. Katryce Nealan, HT History and the coordinator, was relieved that all went well. She had invested so, so much in this excursion. We are fortunate that she, and the other teach-ers, gave up family time before and during the trip, and even though they too had an opportunity that was a true adventure, there was no down time to relax with the respon-sibility to care for 29 young people. They had to be “on” 24/7. Thank you once again to our wonderful staff who do these things for students.

Half yearly exams and NAPLAN It’s that season again. Half yearly exams are up and coming for Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 students and NAPLAN tests are scheduled for Year 7 and 9 students. The following reminder could be useful for parents:

Tuesday May 14 – Thursday May 16 – NAPLAN for Year 7 and 9 Week 2 – Year 8 exams Week 3 – Year 10 exams Week 4 – Year 7 and 9 exams

Good study and planning with plenty of sleep and exercise will be important preparatory strategies to contend with exam pressure. Good luck everyone. New area for students We continue to modernise our recreation areas for students. Extra landscaping and seating construc-tion is underway in the area adjacent to the north oval. Students will very much appreciate this as it will nicely capture the sun’s rays in winter, making for a very pleasant place to have conversation and relax. It’s flu time! Mindful of the winter gremlins, all staff were invited to be vaccinated against the latest influenza virus on the afternoon of Tuesday April 30. Most of us will hopefully now be flu free. Welcome back Welcome back everyone. It’s quite a demanding term but I am looking forward to the many terrific projects and opportunities we have lined up for students and teachers.

Careers NEWS: Firstly, thank you to the numerous organisations who generously gave their time at the two Careers Days towards the end of last term. The days were intended to be diverse in keeping with our students having very different interests, informative and, above all, to promote their consideration of many career options available to them. Pictured at the EXPO event during lunchtime on the Friday are Year 12 students Sam Knight, Kash-viran Naicker and Max Kownacki.

Careers this week: Sydney University representatives presented a great lunchtime INFORMATION session on Wednes-day, as did representatives from the University of Technology Sydney on Friday. Further Lunchtime INFORMATION sessions will be as follows: Thursday 9

th May: University of Notre Dame

Thursday 16th May: Australian Defence Force Recruiting Monday 20th May: Macquarie University Monday 27th May: Australian Catholic University Wednesday 5th June: University of New South Wales Friday 7th June: University of Western Sydney

As with all Careers Events, everyone is welcome to attend. On Tuesday 7th and Wednesday 8th May, I will be addressing concerns or queries about the UAC (Universities Admission Centre) process in the Upper Level of the Library. Naturally, as always, Year 12 students are encouraged to stop by the Careers Office anytime. While UAC applications opened much earlier this year, the closing date is at the end September.

Kind regards, Jane Curran Careers Adviser
