Ted Smith

District Fire Chief , Thousand Oaks, Moorpark and Simi Valley

Volume 59, No. 24 Week of January 9, 2017

Jim Friedl introduced Ted Smith, 37 year veteran of the Ventura County

Firefighter’s District. Fire Chief Smith serves the Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley,

and Moorpark districts. Ted and Hugo Roche’s son, John, have been close

friends for much of their lives. He credits firefighting with changing his life, his

wife for saving his life, and his sons for giving purpose to his life.

Ted gave details of the challenges faced in fighting the extremely aggressive

Springs Fire that started on May 2nd, 2016, that plagued Camarillo Springs and

quickly burned a 28,000 acre path of destruction clear through to Pacific Coast

Highway in the short span of 17 hours. The terrain hadn’t burned since 1983.

250 fire engines were on site by the end of the 1st day, and how their Defensi-

ble Space Program saved lives and property. Only 7 houses burned. Fire Chief

Smith said that even though weed abatement hadn’t been completed for the

year at that point, the fact that many had 100 ft. weed clearance in place,

saved lives and structures. He said the scope of the fire affected him deeply

when seeing Mt. Boney go up in flames.

Jim Friedl commended the Chief on his efforts to notify COSCA so they could

take an active role in determining the best locations to place bulldozers so as

not to have an adverse effect on archeological and other protected sites dur-

ing the fire-fighting efforts.

Minutes of Meeting

December 15, 2016

Joani Pappas opened the meeting with her Moment of In-

spiration. Her theme was “ Make your Decisions Count.” This

means, she said, we should take each day and make the most

of it, see it as a new beginning, do not waste energy, focus on

happiness, and set goals for success.

Joani and Karen Furnari led us in singing “God Bless America” after Joani led us in

the Pledge to the Flag.

Mike Hebert introduced guests of the club, including Kevin McNamee, Lauren

Torres, and Chris Hanner.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

President Robert Bianchi announced news of President Elect Karen Furnari

which was very well received by the Club.

Robert also mentioned that Heather Frankle, wife of District Governor

Frankle, passed away on December 23rd. Her Celebration of Life will take

place on January 15th at Mt. Sinai Cemetery in Simi Valley.

David Masci presented a Paul Harris x 6 pin to Lois Curran-Klein, and Paul

Harris x 8 to Neil Scribner. He acknowledged Nate Harimoto for becoming a

Major Donor and presented him with a pin, as well as Tammie Helmuth for

becoming a Bequest Society Member Level 1. These important contributions

help with many causes both domestically and internationally.

Tammie Helmuth presented a personal Paul Harris to Meghan Lopez for

being a driving force on many of the Boards that Tammie serves on, and for

all that she does for Tammie and the community.

Patricia Jones spoke on how thrilled she was to be a part of the preparation

in Rotary International’s float in the Rose Parade, and to be a representative

of Rotary as she waved to the masses on their trek down Colorado Blvd. She

explained the process of the judging which led to the prestigious Princess

Trophy, and how she so appreciated Tanya Caligiuri’s involvement, as well as

Bob Biery cheering her on from the crowd. Patricia thanked those who con-

tributed towards the float, and mentioned that they still needed to raise

$70,000, as the float cost $150,000 to build. The theme of the float was

“Doing Good in the World”.

Vicki Arndt encouraged members to invite friends and family to attend the

meeting in a couple of weeks when Steve Brown, past RI Trustee, will be our

speaker. She said that he is very inspirational.

Haider Alawami announced the need for note-takers for the remainder of

the Rotary year. He said most slots were filled but they still needed about

11 days covered. He looks forward to members contacting him to sign up.

WOW!

At our Blood Drive we did good work. At the December drive 18 people qualified to donate and we

collected 21 units of lifesaving blood! Thank you so much for all you do to help patients in need.
