April 2017 My Two Cents As mentioned in a previous president’s message, we will endeavor to prepare and present more informative and
educational programs at our monthly chapter meetings. Last month we discussed the Model A engine block and this month
our Technical advisor, Richard Bronstrup, will discuss the Model A cylinder head and after-market alternatives. Art Moore has
agreed to bring and share several different heads available from current manufacturers. In the coming months we plan on
featuring topics like: intake manifolds, exhaust manifolds and headers, steering adjustments and upgrades, etc. If you have
any preferences or suggestions on topics to be featured please contact myself: [email protected] OR Richard:
[email protected] Spring is shaping up to be quite busy for Model A enthusiasts. March found 30 members of our chapter braving the Mojave
Desert to make a run to Laughlin, NV for what may become our annual Spring tour again. Friday night, March 24th, found us
rocking to the tunes of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper at Don Laughlin’s Riverside Resort theater. Saturday
about a dozen model A’s could be seen cruising old Route 66 to Oatman, Arizona where we strolled the streets of an authentic old mining town, fed domesticated donkeys and were treated
to authentic gunfights in the streets. Our Saturday closed with a barbeque hosted by long time members Tom and Johnnie Baxter at their home on the Colorado River. Our deepest
appreciation to the Baxter’s who just went through the tragedy of losing a 3 year old grandson. Here is a news excerpt from the internet: “On March 10th at 11:30pm tragedy struck the home of
Tommy and Tania Baxter. While everyone slept a fire started and nearly cost the entire family their life. Sadly little Lyric
suffered burns to 80% of his body. He was transported to USC Medical Center and is currently on life support in the burn
centers ICU. …” Young Lyric succumbed to his wounds and passed away a few days later. A Go Fund Me account has been
set up to help offset medical costs: https://www.gofundme.com/lyric-baxter-family
Other activities planned for this Spring include: April 2nd annual Orange County Pancake Breakfast at Hart Park in Orange, April
22nd Hubley Tune Up Day at the Bronstrups in Highland, April 29th tour of Chapman Ranch in Mt. Baldy Village, May 20
Riverside Vintage Home tour, May 27th Hubley Derby at San Bernardino Women’s Club and Saturday June 3 the Steve
McQueen Car Show in Chino Hills. And for those seeking a little long distance adventure can join several members touring to Coos Bay, Oregon this summer for the Northwest Regional
Meet held June 22-24. Visit their website for more information: http://2017nwrm.weebly.com/
Please take time and visit our chapter website and bookmark it for future reference. The club calendar can be found there along with copies of past chapter newsletters and tour photos. Much appreciation to those who contribute on a monthly basis with
photos and news. We also have current posts from our Facebook page where chapter members can share info with
each other as well as the public. We can be found on Facebook under Pomona Valley Model A’s. The website address is:

Chapman Family Ranch tour on Saturday April 29th … Dust off your ‘A Bone’ and get her on the road to join in the fun. April features a tour to our local mountains and visit to
the historic ‘Chapman Family Ranch’ near Mt. Baldy. We’ll meet in the parking lot of Sammy’s Café at 131 W Foothill Blvd in Upland and leave at 9AM sharp. We’ll caravan up Euclid Avenue through San Antonio Heights to Mountain Avenue and Mt. Baldy Road to the enchanting village of Mt. Baldy. There, just above the Mt. Baldy Trout Pond, we’ll
leave the main road and visit the Chapman Family Ranch where Clarence and Eleanor Chapman first arrived on horseback in 1901 to eventually found the Chapman Ranch. We will tour the lumber mill (still operating) where timber
was cut for the many structures in Ice House Canyon and see the many original structures built by the Chapman family. We will also see many vintage fire-fighting vehicles and a working small gage train. Our tour will be led by Evan
Chapman, grandson of the founders who currently still lives on the property. The Ranch is NOT open to the public so this is an opportunity that can’t be missed!
A barbeque will be held on the Chapman property following the tour with our chapter furnishing hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks along with paper goods. All we ask is that you bring a side dish or dessert to share.
For more information on the Chapman Ranch see this 1993 LA Times article: http://articles.latimes.com/1993-05-04/local/me-30750_1_pat-chapman or read about them in the popular book series entitled Mt. Baldy by Kimberly J.

CAR OF THE MONTH The Saga of the Gilmore Gas Truck
The truck began its life in the Ford assembly plant on Terminal Island (Los Angels bay) in Long Beach in August 1931. Its early years were spent as an orange grove truck in the foothills of Claremont, CA, specifically Mountain Avenue area at the base of the hills (Claraboya tract of today). The grove owner George Towne sold his citrus grove and moved to the Temecula area of DeLuca Canyon to raise avocados. For many years it helped tend avocados in this hillside country. One day in 1968 through the help of a longtime friend of Bill Towne, George Towne’s nephew, I was able to buy the truck for a whopping $125.00. It had a military 6 x 6 steel bed attached that was not my style. When I got it home, off came the bed which I made into a very serviceable work trailer. Well the truck sat in my yard on Kingsley Avenue, along with about 14 other Model A’s in varied conditions, from 1968 until 2004. We had classy yard art for quite a long time, still do have some remnants. The truck waited all those years until it was decided to build a gas truck. This decision arose from the “find” of a 3 piece compartment vintage tank in a backyard in Chino. Our son George purchased the tank and delivered it to our Pomona sanctuary. While Phyllis and I were on a cruise to New Zealand / Australia in 2004, our sons George and Keith hauled the truck and tanks to George’s house where they and a friend Robert Smith dismantled and rebuilt the truck into its present configured condition. When we returned from our adventure, there was my truck sitting in my driveway, running. What a surprise! We then sent it to San Diego to a friend that is a professional sign painter, who by our instruction replicated the “Gilmore” infield gas truck from the ‘30’s Gilmore race track days. The address and phone number on the door is the actual address and phone number of the day. We gained permission from the Gilmore’s, still owners of the property of track (LA Farmers Market), to use these numbers. We have had lots of fun with this truck, going to car shows and drawing so much attention to a by-gone era. We have shown at such places as the NHRA Winternationals where we were honored as the lead vehicle in the opening parade, Ontario 4th of July parade, Upland Christmas parade, Wrightwood car show, Loma Linda Veterans car show, Ninth street Gang car show in Upland. The truck spent many years on display by the entrance at the NHRA Museum at Fairplex. It is presently on display at Cable Airport in Upland. ~Article by George Munday and photo by Ron Blackwell
