LATHAM — A Division of Military and Naval Affairs employee has been chosen to play for the United States Women’s Curling Scot Tour team in a curling competition in Scotland this Autumn. Nancy Drischler, section chief of mobile device support (pictured at right) was one of 20 curlers picked to be part of the 2016 United States Women’s Curling Scot Tour team. Drischler and her fellow curlers were chosen from a pool of 65 applicants. A 20-member women’s team is chosen every ten years to compete and represent the United States. The tour will last about three weeks, and Drischler and the other curlers will rise early every day, play a pair of two-hour games and retire late. Drischler’s father played the sport when he lived in New Brunswick, Canada and her mother picked up the sport when they moved to New York. Drischler’s mother passed her love of the sport to her. “What did my parents do when they were growing up in Canada? Children there were either into curling or hockey,” Drischler said. “It was the perfect way for my mother and me to bond, we would spend Tuesday nights together curling.” Drischler has spent 10 years playing and being actively involved in the sport. In addition to volunteering for numerous competitions, she’s participated in curling associations such as the Albany Curling Club, Albany Curling Club Women’s Whisks Board, Albany Curling Club Bonspiel. She’s in love with the sport, Drischler said. “It is gracious, respectful, and everyone has an awareness and a respect for the other teams you play against,” she said. Drischler will meet her teammates in Wisconsin in September, and they’ll finalize their preparations. Air Guard NCO Teaches Kids Military Basics

WATERVLIET — Students at the Maplewood School here learned about being Airmen — and some life skills and lessons — thanks to New York Air National Guard Master Sgt. Jeffrey Strickland, Jr.

Strickland, a member of Joint Force Headquarters and a personnel specialist at the New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs, taught about 150 pre-schoolers a number of basic Airmen skills on Jan. 19. Strickland also incorporated exercises and lessons about duty and respon-sibility into a game he conceived.

Strickland said his son Jeffrey III attends the school, at that he conducted the event at the school’s request. Strick-land spent most of the morning at the school, and taught six sessions of about 25 students each.

After showing the kids how to salute, stand at parade rest and stand at attention, Strickland gave them a “special mis-sion,” in which they had to imitate aircraft and navigate an obstacle course. The students had to crawl through a short tunnel, climb a rope and do a few push-ups and jumping jacks.

The students were enthused and had great time, and

they’ll be making cards to send to troops serving overseas, Strickland and school officials said.

Troops Take to Skates to Support Kids’ Hockey

Living in the Northeast, many parents understand or even encourage youth hockey leagues for their children.

For military parents however, hockey can be an expensive sport for children to play, especially combining the costs of pricey equipment, travel for tournaments and ice rental fees that come at all hours, day and night.

For those military families supporting a child’s love of hockey, the charitable organization Defending The Blue Line helps military parents by offering loaner equipment, training camps or even grants to help play hockey.

Defending The Blue Line was founded in the spring of 2009 by two Soldiers from the Minnesota Army National Guard. Their vision was to provide benefits to military families to encourage children to take up the sport of hockey.

The organization also helps families with association fees, free summer hockey camps, and NHL game tickets.

“Bottom line is that the charity is sponsored by the NHL Players Association and allows military families to put their kids into hockey for a drastically reduced price or even free,” said Lt. Col. Peter Mehling, commander of the 1st Battalion, 258th Field Artillery, who participates in the program. “It is available to all ranks.”

Nationwide, Defending The Blue Line expects to

distribute more than 1.75 million dollars in benefits to military families.

The organization is also branching out into other sports, offering assistance for baseball families through Defending the Base Line. That effort provides similar equipment loans or grants.

Questions about the program can be sent to regional coordinators Mike Moricas from Boston at [email protected] or Jason Hutchins in New Jersey at [email protected].

More information is available at www.defendingtheblueline.org.
