Principal’s Report:
C ongratulations to Mrs Barbara McCarty who earlier this
week was recommended as our preferred applicant for
the Assistant Principal position. Barbara has been Acting
Assistant Principal several times as she is currently, she has a
thorough knowledge of how the school runs, her passion for stu-
dents reaching their full potential is beyond dispute and she has
strong links with the Rochester community. I am thrilled to an-
nounce her appointment and I am confident our school will con-
tinue to maintain our high standing with her as our Assistant
Principal. See page 2.
Over the years I have been here at Rochester Secondary College
we have been most fortunate to have had a very active and sup-
portive Parents Club this year ably led by Maree Macague. Not
only have they raised tens of thousands of dollars which they
have directed back into the school in many ways but they pro-
vide an outstanding source of advice and guidance to the school.
Parents Club meet once per month in a convivial and friendly
atmosphere. If there are any new parents or ‘old hands’ who
would be interested in supporting us in this way please contact
the school. Your support would be highly valued.
In the same vein we have been extremely fortunate to have an
outstanding canteen manager for many years, Beulah Brann, but,
from time to time she appreciates an extra set of hands. If there
are any parents who could spare a few hours in the mornings to
help that would also be much appreciated.
Congratulations to our swimming team who won the overall
handicap last Monday in Echuca, particularly well done to Zahra
Hayes and Rachel Johnson who won age championships—full
results on page 5. Many thanks to Mr Harris and all other staff
who attended and commented that our team were a credit to
Rochester Secondary College.
Mobile phones are banned at Rochester Secondary College. If
they are seen or heard on school grounds they will be confiscat-
ed and ‘arrangements made for collection by parents’. This rule
has caused consternation with some students. To avoid tension
and anxiety I strongly recommend students leave their phones at
home.
Once again many thanks for your ongoing support.

New Appointment
Mrs Barbara McCarty takes over the reins as
Assistant Principal at Rochester Secondary Col-
lege.
Year 12 Update
C ongratulations to Mrs McCarty for her well
-deserved promotion to Assistant Principal.
The students I have spoken to are pleased
that she has gained the position but more im-
portantly they are understanding of her value to
our college community.
Mr Altmann and Mrs McCarty have been working
on “Raising the Bar” for all students and the col-
lege as a whole. Part of the program is to increase
the out of class study. The VCE was designed to
have 40% of the work and learning to be outside
of class for all subjects. This equates to 15 hours
of study and preparation per week. I know some
students are doing this but many are not. The end
of the term is always busier for assessment as
teachers ‘finish’ units or Areas of Study. As such,
students should be aware they will possibly have
several assessment tasks due. They should be pre-
paring for their assessments at home.
Soon all Year 12 students and some Year 11 will be
receiving information regarding Edrolo - this is an
online tutorial/study/homework program. We are un-
dertaking a free trial to evaluate if it will be of benefit.
I will forward more details as they come to hand.
Finally, the Year 12 trip is in the first week of May. It
will be four days and last year’s cost was approx.
$300.

Acting Senior School Manager
Lions
Youth of the Year
L ast Sunday three of our senior students compet-
ed at the Rochester Bowling Club in this pres-
tigious annual public speaking and community
leadership event. As well as being interviewed about
themselves and their general knowledge, the contest-
ants presented a five minute speech on a topic of their
choice. They were also expected to give two im-
promptu answers to questions in front of their audi-
ence, something that very few people would be com-
fortable to do!
Molly Taylor spoke about the necessity for feminism,
Elise Anderson’s talk was about breastfeeding in pub-
lic and Genevieve Foott discussed the mandatory de-
tention of children. Genevieve was the overall winner,
with Elise taking out the public speaking award. Con-
gratulations to all three students who represented our
College so well, as they always do.
Many thanks to John Prigg and the local Lions Club:
this competition is a great way for our students to
show the local community what they can do, gaining
fantastic interview and public speaking experience in
the process.

Strive For Progress, Not Perfection
The Campaspe Academy of Sport would like to welcome a selected group of students in Year 8 and Year 9 into our program.
There were a large number of students arrived at our college Tuesday morning at 7.40. The students were involved in a variety
of training methods including: interval training, circuit training and weight training. The session finished at 8.30 and although
the students found it challenging, they were rewarded with a hearty breakfast and some freshly baked banana muffins supplied
by Mrs W.
Thanks to Leigh Millard, Luis Harris and Leisa Evans for conducting the early morning training session. There will also be an
opportunity for CAS students to attend the Friday morning training sessions where they can work on their individual training
program or refine their skills and technique in their chosen sport.
