An exciting month for K4BFT. Have a look
in the shack and check out the new HF
station featuring the IC-746 Pro. Thanks
Bob K8KI for the successful Ebay bidding
to get the rig below our target cost. We’ll
have pictures in next month’s issue.
Thanks also goes to Gigaparts for sponsor-
ing part of the purchase of the Heil Proset
Elite headphones. We’re indeed fortunate
to have a supportive Ham Radio dealership
in our area, not just for major purchases
but for that weekend “I need another coax
patch cable” moment.
This month’s VOX marks what I hope is a
turning point in that material is coming in
from different sources. Thank you con-
tributors! With the diversity of authors &
subjects, we hope there’s something of inter-
est to all readers.
This month we’re starting a new column fea-
turing a “Hamshack of the Month” photo.
Send yours in to be included in a future edi-
tion. The repeater list is also expanded and
updated. It may not run every month due to
space but will be posted to the HARC web-
site.
There’s still time to get that wire antenna
into the trees before the spring leaves ob-
scure those upper branches. Hope your pro-
jects are nearing completion. Good DX.

Remember the excitement of opening that box containing
your new radio? The club room was full of that excitement as
we opened up the Kenwood TSKenwood TSKenwood TSKenwood TS----590 590 590 590 HF radio brought to the
meeting by Robert Barnett KE4GNN. There certainly was lots
of interest in the new (s/n 00006xx) radio.
The power cable pack-
aging was still sealed!

ARES stands for Amateur Radio Emergency Service. We are ham radio operators who have made ourselves available and have participated in training and testing of our skills and stations. If local agencies have a communications need, they can call to acti-vate us for operations. We host the Emergency Training Net on Thursday nights at 7:30 on the 146.94 repeater. We also meet together on the second Thursday of each month at the Emergency Operations Center, downtown, about 6pm. Let me introduce you to the leadership of the Madison County, Alabama ARES organi-
zation.
Rolf Goedhart, K4RGG, is the Emer-gency Coordinator, or EC, of our area. He is a past president of HARC. Rolf has the great ability of a leader, in that he finds people to perform tasks, and then lets them do it without micro-managing or nagging. He is always there to help when needed, and has volunteered for many exercises and events like racing. Speaking of racing, Rolf has become quite the athlete. I don't quite know if he is running to
something or away from it, but you will usually find him in the mix of it! Rolf has been quite instrumental in pushing our ARES group harder and equipping them with the newest of technolo-gies. APRS, Digital Modes, and, D-Star are just a few of the things that have come into our arsenal while under his watch. After the exercises and events are all finished, Rolf is the one who stays up late to file the paperwork. He has recently received his Citizen-ship here in the U.S., and probably knows more about our govern-
ment than I can remember from middle school.
Chuck Lewis N4NM, Tim Holland KK5H, and Doug Mathes N4CZ
Doug Mathes, N4CZ, Assistant Emergency Coordinator (AEC), is the newest member of our leadership, but he is definitely not new to Emergency Communications (EmComm). He has completed
volumes of training, and has participated in many different nets and exercises. Doug has taken his training into the “real world” by serv-ing in Haiti during their massive earthquake. More recently, Doug has been spearheading the task of implementing ham stations in our local hospitals. This has been on ongoing task, as putting in the radio is the smallest part. The real difficulty arises with the logistics of the antenna system. He has been very helpful in putting together the D-Star files for our W4HMC stations so they are all on the “same page.”
Always ready to help, Doug has been a real asset to our group.
Alan Sieg, WB5RMG, AEC, may be the most computer-savvy of us. He has set up and maintains our HMCRACES.ORG HMCRACES.ORG HMCRACES.ORG HMCRACES.ORG website that has been a real resource to us here in ARES. He has worked as an Assistant EC in Mississippi, Colorado, Tennessee, South Carolina, and now, Alabama. He works with satellite com-munications, digital modes and has played with Amateur TeleVision (ATV) some too. He most recently has been instrumental in resurrecting the Redstone
Arsenal Amateur Radio Club. Alan is the go-to guy if you need help in connecting through many different resources like our website and
many other social-networking methods.
Chuck Lewis, N4NM, AEC, is the self-proclaimed “geezer of the bunch.” Chuck is an avid DX'er who has a wonderful (if not tactical) qth that overlooks our fair city. Having a lot of experience has not kept Chuck living in the past. He always has a vision and implements it through a lot of planning. His real forte may be in setting up simu-lations like the SET that we went through last fall. He's always a joy to be around and will lend a willing ear and some advice to help. Just
don't get him mad though, he plays ice hockey in the evenings!
As for myself, I am Tim Holland, KK5H, AEC, Deputy Radio Officer. I work as the Net Manager for our group. I help to set up the sched-ules, formats and training for the weekly nets. I also try to have the resources (read, operators, like YOU) in place with some training in case a real event comes our way. I do spend some of my time actu-ally handling “personal issues” between people in our group. I don't shy from this, because we are all different, and may handle situations differently. I just make sure the personalities don't detract from the accomplishment of our mission. I enjoy HF phone, SSTV, and some digital modes. I spend a lot of my day, through my work, in my truck. It is during those times that I try to keep in contact through 2 meters with everyone that I can. I want us to become familiar and comfort-
able with our radios and repeaters.
Well that's all for this month! In upcoming articles, I hope to cover station setups, proper EMCOMM operations, and exercises that we
will be having. Join us on the air, and let's get trained!
Tim,
KK5H
P.S. QRV? means “are you ready?” I hope your response is “I am
ready!”

The shack committee's recommendation to pur-
chase an Icom 746 Pro has been fulfilled. The
radio was purchased for $849, shipping included,
and there was another $125 in expenditure for a
new set of Heil Pro Set Elite headphones with
boom mike and Icom adaptor, and a foot T/R
switch, provided by Gigaparts at half price.
Mark, Charlie Tedder W1CST, and others noted
there are HF weather nets operating between
3930 and 3980 kHz, and that these have been
active during recent winter storm events nation-
wide.
Skywarn classes will be held March 8, 2010 from
6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Jaycees building on Airport
Road.
Jack Hemby, W5WQQ reported that HARC's next
license class for General grade will be held from
6:00 to 7:30 pm on eight consecutive Fridays be-
ginning March 11.
The VP8ORK South Orkney Islands DXpedition
continues until Monday, 2/8/2011. NADXC con-
tributed to this DXpedition. A few HARC members
reported having worked VP8ORK.

The Icom 740 for sale because of the shack up-
grade was purchased for $200 by Dan Miller,
KI4PMW.
Woody Ziegler, K8GNM reported on behalf of the
antenna committee that a local sign company
can provide a bucket truck for $85/hour for
work on the Red Cross tower. He proposes tak-
ing down the tower to paint it, refurbush the an-
tenna and rotor, and replace all wiring. During
discussion on this topic Johnny Winter, KR4F
said the tower should not be painted, but cold-
galvanized if rust was a concern. Woody says
there is no intention to work on the tower until
after the weather improves.
