Last weekend we joined the Tree Planting and Caravan of our District. With me were Lt.G. Eric Ignacio, AG Dante Verano, PP Ronie Masangkay, PP Benjie Malaya, Dir. Manny Pecho, PRO Joel Relleve, Sgt.-at-Arms Peter Co, Rtn. Boyet Culminas and Rotaractor DL Verano. Having four cars from our club, we joined the caravan with other clubs of the zone from Shell Marcos Hway to Ynares Complex Antipolo City where we joined the caravan of the other zones of the district. From Ynares Complex the caravan proceeded to Camp Capinpin, Tanay Rizal. A mass, Band Exhibition, Jungle Fighter formation exercises, a boodle fight lunch and ceremonial tree planting were among the activities at the camp. Each Club was given at least ten (10) Kamagong tree seedlings which I think would be best to be planted at our Rotary Park along FVR Road. IVC Complex. This weekend, April 25 to 26, 2015 most of us will be going up Baguio City to attend the DIS-TAS 2015 at Camp John Hay Convention Center, though some will already be there tomorrow for the District Golf Tournament. PE Willie Reyes have arranged accommodations for us at the Teacher’s Camp and at the Forest lodge in Camp John Hay. For those who still want to attend the District Assembly, you can register on-site. Next week’s regular meeting, we have a candidate to be inducted as the 4th baby Rotarian and the 73rd member of our club. PSSUPT/Col. Vincent S. Calanoga is at present the chief of po-lice of the Marikina City and from Marikina Heights. His sponsoring Rotarian is Rtn. Rogel Santiago. Tonight, we will be inducting the officers of our 3rd Rotary Community Corps. Dir Joey Ramos with Rtn. Rogel Santiago and Rtn. Peter Co organized these men and women from Malanday as our partner in service. They had their orientation and election of officers last week. Their induction will be witnessed by the District Chairman for Rotary Community Corps, PP Jack Sia of the Rotary Club of Mandaluyong North.

Again I would like to remind those who have forgotten to settle their dues to please update them with our Secretariat Jean Josef or to Treasurer Jerome Josef. Thank you.

Happy 385th Foundation Day Marikina! (Part2) In 1906, the Manila Railroad Company completed the 31-kilometer steam train line called "Marikina Line", also known as Rosario-Montalban branch, (converted into the road which is now known as DaangBakal, including Shoe Avenue), Marikina Railway Depot (Marikina Elementary School in the pre-sent-day) and Marikina Railway Station (which stands today as Marikina Sports Center), connecting Montalban and Rosario (now known as Tramo, in Pasig). Marikina Bridge, a vital economic link to Ma-nila, was formally opened in 1934. During the construction of the train line, not far from Marikina Railway Depot, Marikina Airfield was completed and used for civilian airfield. The runways were subsequently converted into the road known today as E. Rodriguez Avenue and E. Santos Streets, and the airfield stands today as Paliparan Subdivision. In 1936, the train line was completely abandoned, while the air-field became primarily used by the Japanese during World War II. After the war, neither was rebuilt.

In 1942, Japanese Imperial forces occupied Marikina. The town was liberated in 1945 by combined U.S. and Philippine Commonwealth ground troops, who attacked the Japanese Imperial Army by artillery from Quezon City. Almost all of the large buildings, including the church bell tower, were destroyed. In reality, the Japanese had already left the town and retreated to the north. The town saw over 400 civil-ian casualties by the end of World War II. Local Filipino troops under the pre-war 4th and 42nd Infantry Division of the Philippine Commonwealth Army entered Marikina and assisted U.S. forces in attacking Japanese troops during the liberation.

In 1956, Marikina had re-emerged as a town of shoemakers after World War II. Honed by years of shoe manufacturing experience, the natives had developed a work ethic that prepared them for the arrival of heavy industries, and the town was finally named as the "Shoe Capital of the Philippines". With the in-dustrial plants came waves of workers who chose to stay, rapidly increasing the population. In 1968, Kapitan Moy's house (now known as SentrongPangkultura ng Marikina) was declared a national shrine by the town council and the National Historical Commission. In 1969, Rodriguez Sports Complex, known today as Marikina Sports Center was completed.

On November 7, 1975, by virtue of Presidential Decree No. 824, four cities and thirteen towns of Rizal, including Marikina, were made part of Metropolitan Manila Area. On October 23, 1988, Typhoon Unsang brought heavy rains, causing widespread flooding in Marikina for the first time. Large parts of Marikina was submerged by floods and many residents were stranded on their house rooftops and trees, and their properties and businesses were extensively damaged.

By 1992, Marikina had become an industrialized urban municipality under the leadership of Bayani Fer-nando. Marikina River was transformed into a waterway, with parks along the riverbanks. On December 8, 1996, the municipality of Marikina became a city and transformed rapidly into a highly urbanized. Ma-rikina became a First Class City by virtue of Republic Act No. 8223, the day of the Feast of Immaculate Concepcion, signed by President Fidel V. Ramos. To be continued next week

MAGAZINE MONTH Rotary International designates April as Magazine Month, and when we hear this we immediately think of the beautiful glossy Rotarian magazine we receive each month in the mail. It’s a magazine filled with wonderful articles about Rotary’s humanitarian work around the world, interviews with World leaders, heartwarming articles of Rotarians telling their “Rotary Story” and much more. But what do we really know about the genesis, and history of this magazine and other magazines Rotarians look forward to receiving each month? As President of Rotary International, Paul Harris in 1911, along with Secretary Chesley Perry felt that a periodic publication was needed to share information among a growing number of Rotarians and Rotary Clubs. Perry was the first editor for the magazine and held the position until 1928. The first edition of “The National Rotarian” debuted in January 1911 and consisted of just 12 pages, and had a few news items from Rotary clubs, announcement of new clubs, and an essay written by our founder Paul Harris titled “Rational Rotarianism”. In the second issue published in July 1911, he wrote, “the primary purpose of The National Rotarian is to provide a means for the exchange of ideas between Rotarians throughout the world, not to give the national officers an opportunity to ex-press their views. These messages are not written merely to fill space; nevertheless we look forward to the day when they will be literally crowded out by surging mobs of virile Rotarian ideas struggling to be heard.” Only a year after it’s beginning the name of the magazine was changed to The Rotarian due to clubs begin formed outside the United States, principally in Canada, Great Britain and Ireland. The early editions of The Rotarian were dedicated primarily to business ethics, character development and mem-bership growth. Over the years the works of many renowned artists have graced the cover of The Rotarian, includ-ing Norman Rockwell, Arthur Crouch and Eugene Iverd. Iverd’s last painting, just before his untimely death at age 49, titled The First Ride was featured on the cover of the May 1939 issue. However, The Rotarian was not able to reach all areas of the growing Rotary world, or adequately reflect the local culture or address regional issues. So soon after the debut of The Rotarian, regional Rotary magazines began to appear. In 1912 The Rotary Wheel, which was the first regional magazine was published presenting Great Britain and Ireland. In the 1920’s Australia began it’s regional maga-zine which was the forerunner of today’s Rotary Down Under, and was the first regional magazine approved by Rotary International. Ceskoslovensky Rotary first appeared in Eastern Europe in 1929 but was banned by the Nazi’s from 1938 to 1945, and by the communist from 1948 to 1989. In 1990 the publication regained life and was renamed Rotary Good News in 2002. To be continued…

77 photography techniques, tips and tricks for taking pictures of anything

Landscape photography technique 07: tilt-shift landscapes Tilt-shift photography enables you to combine the sharpness of large lens apertures with the extensive depth of field you normally associate with small apertures.

This is achieved by using a tilt-shift lens, which can be both tilted (to control the plane of focus) and shifted (to correct any converging verticals).

However, by tilting the lens to give an ultra-shallow plane of focus and, you can make landscapes look like miniature models.

The most convincing tilt-shift landscapes combine an element of hardware (trains , boats, cars) and a raised shooting position to mimic the view of looking down at toys on a bedroom floor.

Tilt-shift lenses are expensive though, so why not create a fake tilt-shift miniature photo in Photoshop? The results can be just as effective.
