“Sing It First” by Wycliffe Gordon

“Sing It First” is based on the premise that if you can sing something, then you can play it or train yourself to play it. The concept applies to all instrumentalists—brass, wind, percussion, strings, etc. When you are able to sing rhyth-mically, melodically, and harmonically through a given exercise, etude, excerpt, or chord pro-gression, this means you have “internalized” the music you are attempting to make, and this is the best place to start. While it is something that came to me in the latter part of my musical development, it is not so “unique” a concept, and certainly not new. Many of the great master perform-ers and teachers have applied and employed this concept throughout the history of musical pedagogy and performance. I have been told from the earlier years of my development, “the instrument is an extension of your voice.” Of course, I understood what it meant, but until I began to practically apply it to everything I worked on, I was unaware of its true and immediate benefits. As instrumentalists (trom-bonists), we spend lots of time trying to learn

and “figure out” music while we are playing on our instruments, oftentimes thinking of chord changes, scales, key signatures, positions, tonguing, etc. This applies to every situation, such as learning an etude or excerpt, right up to transcribing a JJ Johnson solo. Try leaving the horn on the stand—or in the case for that matter—and “sing” through the etude or exercise first. Sing along with the recording of a solo that you are attempting to learn before attempting to do it on the instrument. “If you can sing it, you can play it!!!” is what I always say. It is important to sing accurately and in tune, and if difficult at first, with practice it will come with great ease. When you are able to execute this, it means you have “internal-ized” the music and it now resides where music should come from: within. You can always learn to play something on an instrument, but when you can sing it, you got it!!!! When you “Sing It First,” you learn it more expeditiously, as you will always have your voice with you, whether you have your trombone or not. Your only evidence that you know the words to your favorite song comes when you sing it. If you want the same verification that you know something that you’re working on musically, Sing It First!!!!!

President’s Messageby Dave Becker STJS PRESIDENT

< d ave @ s a c j a z z . co m >

I hope everyone has rested up from the 2015 Sacramento Music Festival. WE HAD A GREAT FESTIVAL! Our

2016 Sacramento Music Festival is in its planning stages, and starting July 1st, you can purchase your tickets online through Eventbrite. If you really like a band or group, the best way to get the band to the Music Festival is to help sponsor them. Give us a call or email me ([email protected]) if you are interested in sponsoring your favorite band.

Admission for Jazz Sunday—effective immediately—has been lowered to $8.00 for Members and $10.00 for Non-Mem-bers, Student prices remain the same, please pass the word. Do you have any ideas how we can get the word out to everyone about our Jazz Sunday, each month attendance has been going down, I would really like to have some ideas to bring people back to our Jazz Sunday. If you think about it, it really is a Mini Music Festival — three rooms of great music.

And don’t forget the Elks’ Sunday Buffet Breakfast from 9:00 to 11:00 am for only $9 per person—a great way to start a great day of music.

Anyone interested in buying a used piano, we are selling our pianos and replacing them with electronic keyboards. This will give us more room in the Warehouse for other items, and save us money.

Thank you all for your support — Dave 2

Have a great time

at the Festival!

Presto Change-oby STJS Music Committee

Reminder: After much discussion among musicians (instrumentalists ..AND vocalists), the Music Committee

decided—as an experiment—to have the Vocal Set happen earlier, to begin at 12:50 p.m. and end at 2:25 p.m. (90 min-utes). The rest of the day will consist of instrumental sets with sign-ups, as usual. This change began with the June 14th Jazz Sunday. At its upcoming August 17 meeting, the Music Com-mittee will reevaluate this three-month (June–Aug.) experi-ence to see if the change has increased attendance and partic-ipation by instrumentalists, and review the impact on the very popular Vocal Set.

Your participation will be the primary factor for assessing the positive or negative impacts of this shift. Come to Jazz Sunday and take part! 2

Danny Coots (cont.)European tour. It was a success, so they are planning another tour of Germany & Austria featuring the Draga-Coots All-Stars, September 15–29, 2015. They will explore the beautiful alpine region of Bavaria and Austria while enjoying live jazz daily.

This November, just before Thanksgiving, Danny will join Allan Vaché and his brother, Warren Vaché, aboard the MSC Divina for a Caribbean cruise. http://www.jazzfestatsea.com/ Next year, Danny and several of the “International All-Stars” that Janet Young sponsored for our recent Festival will sail Northern Europe — from London to Copenhagen — with Jazzdagen Tours, June 5 - 12, 2016 on the Crystal Symphony. They’ll visit London/Tibury (England), Antwerp (Belgium) Overnight, Amsterdam (The Netherlands) overnight, Arendal (Norway), Goteborg (Sweden), Copenhagen (Denmark). Visit Danny’s website for a list of upcoming events, tours, festivals and more. http://dannycoots.com/

Kidney Donation to Danny Matson In December 2013, Danny Coots underwent surgery to gra-ciously donate one of kidneys to jazz fan Danny Matson from Columbus, OH. The two Dannys had met in 2009 at a rag-time festival in San Antonio, and discovered they had much

in common besides a love for jazz music. While Danny seems to be friends with just about every jazz fan he knows, he said that Matson stood out. They continued building their bond of friendship whenever they saw each other at jazz festival here and there. When Matson brought up the subject of needing a kidney donor, he mentioned that the donor would first need to match his rare blood type to qualify. Now ask yourself: could anyone BE more POSITIVE than Danny Coots? Well, he hap-pens to have B negative blood, just like Danny Matson. From there, Danny became more interested and educated about the process of being a live organ donor.

6 July 2015

July Jazz Sunday is moved to the 3rd Sunday, July 19 with guest artist Danny Coots.

STJS musicians and audiences are nothing if not flexible – well, that’s what Jazz is all about, right? Improvisation? Mica

Dugan brought the River City Swingers from the Sacramento Youth Band (trumpet: Grady Flamm, Kelsey Smith, Bryce Hansen, Antonio Nova-Castillo; alto sax: Brandon Charriere, Sophia Flores, Sophie Modar; tenor sax/vocal: Joanna Koford; baritone sax: Stephen Fratallon, E.J. Monjares; trombone: Thomas Monce, Claire Parker, Carrie Parker; and pianist Montana Monce, bassist Ryan Ioanidis; and drummer Garrett Frazier). And they got about two numbers into their excellent set and we shut them down!

The thing is, the Elks Clubs was instrumental in having Flag Day set permanently on June 14 – signed into law in 1949 by Elk Member Harry S Truman. So a Flag Day ceremony is mandated in the Bylaws of the Elks. Richard Cherry organized the cere-mony, which this year, in this place, included a very respectful audience of STJS members.

Following the flag ceremony, the RC Swingers returned unper-turbed and swinging without restraint. They were followed by even less restraint from the West End Stompers, our June Guest Band. Well, you and I know that a band helmed by trombonist/vocalist and unrepentant cut-up Brandon Au lacks inhibition, balanced by a LOT of talent, wit and expertise. Brother Justin Au on trumpet and Otis Mourning on reeds were supported by banjo/guitarist Bill Dendle, with Zack Sapunor on bass and Jack Stan-fill on drums. Zack’s two-handed attack on that stand-up bass is just mind-boggling. Lots of fun, and a goodly number of dancers!

The “sandwich set” (Set 3) was a version of the Seldom Herd Band, with vocalist Geri Eckert and “guest vocalist” Jim Fusaro, Dick Lockwood and Parker Weis, Carl Kaiser, Mark Kramer, Ray Farley, Larry Tyrell, and Carl Warmdahl. This group is rapidly becoming one of my favorites. So – OKOM won the day in excellent style.

The Gold Card Room had its first trial of the “time shift”, with the Vocal Set moving to Set 2 rather than 3. The instrumen-talists who clamored for the change didn’t step up as expected. Don’t misunderstand – the music was grand all afternoon; there just needed to be more musicians to justify the alteration. We hope you’ll all be present and accounted for on July 19.

Carl Kaiser, Dave Metz, Eddi Benjamini, and Jim Laveroni, gave GCR a big trad rush to start, and another version of Seldom Herd (Kaiser, Weis, Lindskoog, Farley, Warmdahl and Eckert, with Head Herder Lockwood) closed out the day with Set 4. Set 2 was—“natch”—Charlie Hull, Ken Meyers and Alan Ginter, with Dan Lobay setting the tempo. Jim Roberson went to New Orleans Jazz Camp, and he and Eve made a Grand Tour of it afterwards, which accounts for Lobay filling in. Charlie Hull continued into Set 3, with Jimmy Spero, Mickey Bennett and Tony Bellacera.

Edd Burhans and Vanna Turner started the Vocal Set with a clever presentation of Simon & Garfunkel’s “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” – Vanna fielding a list longer than she is tall. She swears that Edd said he chose her because, of all the women in the Vocal Set cohort, she is the meanest and nastiest! Bad Edd.

Pat Kennedy sang – not Percy Sledge’s “When a Man Loves a Woman” – but one of Billie Holiday’s first hits, “When a Woman Loves a Man.” Dorit Benjamini is tied with Alan Ginter as a storyteller, but edges Alan out because hers usually tie into her song. She was 19 years old, renting a room at the Y. She met a young man, a member of the Israeli Air Force (Eddi), in the U.S. on a visitor’s visa. On their third date he told her she didn’t know it yet, but they were going to get married. She scoffed, resisted,

but finally said “alright, okay, you win.” She only later discovered it was a song, and she sang it.

She also showed us a “cartoon” of husband Eddi’s band, the MusiCats, which was painted by Susan Meyers, Ken’s wife. It really is like a family in the Vocal Set, and a very talented family at that. Alan Ginter (sorry for the slam, above) sang “I Sure Had a Wonderful Time Last Night. Least wise, they tell me I did.” Very amusing. So maybe it was a tie with Dorit.

GCR Honcho Paula Dula introduced Wally Hawkins as her Music Festival running buddy. He sang “Slow Boat to China.” We heard “Street of Dreams” from Harry DuVall, and “You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To” from Keith Williams. Vivian Lee said she was not doing the “Gene Kelly bouncing along” version of “Singing in the Rain.” Vivian will be at George Esposito’s Sunset Jazz Series on August 27. Before that, (Devan Kortan’s )the Kortet with Brady McKay will be at Esposito’s on Thurs., July 16. Reservations: (916) 407-8904. It’s only $10 for a lovely evening of jazz under the trees (with wine and snacks). Check out the Sunset Jazz blog at http://espositosunsetjazz.blogspot.com This is his 11th year of turning his patio into a jazz venue.

Gwenetta Brooks said “I Ain’t Got Nothing but the Blues” and Jeanette Hall talked about “Old Fashioned Love.” Joanna Koford asked “Do You Know What (continued on page 8)

It Means to Miss New Orleans,” and Larry Sikorski hit us with “Begin the Beguine,” with Todd Morgan and Wally Hawkins using the sign-up table as tom-toms to give a little emphasis to that swivel-hips rhythm. Todd then claimed the piano bench and worked as the back-up act for Paula and Wally (okay, maybe they were HIS back-up act) on “Baby, It’s All Right Now,” which certainly wasn’t OKOM, but certainly did have mostly everybody dancing in the aisles. Conrad DeCastro was dancing with Cheryl Hill.

Before the Vocal Set closed, Gwenetta and Paula made a pre-sentation to Anne and Tony Muljak in honor of their 66th wed-ding anniversary. (We mentioned back in November that Tony is 91 and a 71-year Elk.) Anne and Tony have 5 children, 8 grand-children, and 3 greats. Their friends, Lloyd and Ellen Sipkin, and Serena Canussi, were celebrating with them.

The Tailgate Room was WAY different this month. Before we had signed the contract to use the Elks’ facilities, a longtime Elk had a reception booked into the “Emblem Room,” where we usu-ally meet. So, we were invited to make use of the “Game Room.” We moved the poker tables, the bar, the comfy seating – every-thing but the pool tables and bookshelves – and had a delightful afternoon. Sound Crew booking agent Judy Hendricks said if we were in there again, she would probably agree to put in a min-imal sound system, but this month she was a meanie, and it was completely acoustic except for a bass amp. Singers had to strain just a bit, but since the seats were within knee-touching distance, it worked fine. Very homey.

Trombonist Bob Gonzalez led Set 1, with Parker Weis, Frank Lindskoog, Dave Sieber and Carl Warmdahl. Claude Purcell was the vocalist. Set 2 was primarily a youth set, with Grady Flamm on trumpet, Grayson Clift on trombone, Toby Keys on reeds, Montana Monce on piano, the Fraziers, Owen and Gar-rett, on bass and drums, and TG Honcho Jane Reinmuth on vocal.

TG 3 featured Ken Champion, Jack Mootz, Toby Keys, Billie Menz, Ned Poffinbarger, Jack Orlove and Mike Mel-nikov. Mike, when asked how he was, said he was staying afloat in a leaky old boat. I know JUST what he means.

Tailgate finished up the day with Grady Flamm, Gene Mondro, Jake Nalangan, Dave Rees, Jim Lavaroni and Kate Rees. And, no, I didn’t get a chance to talk to Jake, but I hope he’ll be back so I can get his story for you. I’m guessing middle school, with talent to spare. Karl Jacobsen said he studied the trumpet briefly in grade school, but just “never caught on.” He bought a tuba last summer, has been studying since about April. He was tucked in behind the band on Set 4. He and Barbara are headed up to the Pacific North-west, where they’ll meet up with Bert and Rose Marie Barr and other friends in the Trailer Trash Jazz Band. He vows to find a teacher when he comes back. Tu-bah, tu-bah!

(Cont. from page 7) Vanna Turner’s grandson, a tot with the weighty moniker of Emerson Crawford-Turner, was enjoying the day with his dad, Jeremy Turner (who brought the Joe Panini Food Truck to the Sac. Music Festival). On the other end of the spectrum, I ran into Pat and Robert Holzknecht as they were heading home. Robert is 94 years old, a longtime Elk who comes over to the Athletic Room several times a week to work out!

I was saddened to learn that Russell Burke died back in Janu-ary. He and Allyn were among the first STJS members I met, and they were involved in many, many other organizations, including the Sacramento Ragtime Society. He and Allyn were married for 63 years and have 4 daughters, 9 grandchildren and 16 greats. All our sympathy goes to Allyn and family.

Betz Storey announced that she may have sent out her last “JazzRus” column due to some health issues and @&*!% inter-net problems. She has been a fabulous resource for the jazz com-munity. Sure hope she can get back into the fray.

I talked to Yvonne Butler, who said she is only able to come to STJS intermittently. She worked in the Musician’s Hospital-ity Room at the Festival for several years, but difficulty walking caught up with her. We’re glad to see her when she CAN make it.

Susan and Larry Weinstein said they’ve lived in Elk Grove for 13 years, and have known about the Jubilee, but had another commitment on that weekend in the past. This year they attended on Senior Day (Monday), had a great time, and joined up. That’s what we like to hear.

Looks like a particularly strong quarter out at Straw Hat, including (Bonnie Otto) Smart Fellers on July 22 and Gene Mondro and Pat Blucher on August 5. Sign up with Don Luth-ringer <[email protected]> to get a schedule emailed to you. And you should know that Cell Block 7 will be at San Joa-quin DJS on Aug. 2 (Stockton Elks at 8900 Thornton Road). You can also dance the afternoon away Tuesday afternoons from 2:00 to 4:30, at the Stockton-Lodi Ballroom (9650 Thornton Road). The Sutter Creek Ragtime is August 14-16 this year, so you don’t even have to miss STJS. www.suttercreekragtime.com 2

Danny Coots (cont.)While many tried to discourage him with fearful thoughts of a worst-case scenario, Danny maintained a positive outlook and mindset – his mind was set on donating a kidney to his friend, Danny Matson.

“Danny made it seem right,” said Matson. For several years, Matson had been dependent on kidney dialysis, so finding a close match for a kidney donation was miraculous news for him. Danny continued to the next phase of the risky procedure “with the realization that there are no guarantees.”

Coots said, “I’m not trying to make the best business deal.” For him, with his kind and generous nature, it was an oppor-tunity to act in a manner that honored his own best image of himself.

“If the worst happened, and he [Matson] died on the table, at least at the end of his life, he knew he was loved,” said Coots of his friend and jazz fan. He was also prepared for any and all complications that could quite possibly befall him as well. That is true courage, Mr. Coots! To quote Nelson Mandela: “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the tri-umph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”

The two surgeries took place during a brief but adequate hiatus in Danny’s touring schedule, and both procedures went very well, with a speedy recovery. Incidentally – quirky kook that he is – Coots had his surgeon take a photo of his kidney during the moment it sat on a table. (You can understand if I don’t wish to print it here.)

The two Dannys spent time together while recuperating, and we can only imagine that Danny’s laughter was great medicine for Matson’s healing. It’s admiral and incredible that Danny Coots resumed a full touring schedule in 2014, a little over one month after surgery.

Let’s come out to Jazz Sunday on July 19 to show support for Danny, for trad jazz, and each other. 2

Letter to the Editor“Give Love Back to Eddie”

Make checks payable to Elinor Hackett, who will deposit them into Eddie’s account. Be sure to put “Gift for Eddie” on the Memo line of your check, and include your e-mail address. Then mail to: Elinor Hackett 9037 Mojave Drive Sacramento, CA, 95826-4521

FROM THE EDITOR

It’s been posted on Michael Steinman’s “Jazz Lives” website and in The American Rag, so by now you’ve read or heard about this fundraising effort to help beloved musician Eddie Erickson pay medical bills after his recent heart valve replacement. Super fan Elinor Hackett set up an account to receive personal checks by mail, and Sue Kroninger has helped get the word out. Then Ken McMurray set up a GoFundMe.com account for making electronic contributions online. We’re including mention in “AATJ” to inform all of Eddie’s fans and youth musicians who know him from many years on the STJS Jazz Camp Faculty (The Professors) and as a clinician at our Trad. Jazz Youth Band Festival. (Eddie Erickson was our 2008 TJYBF Guest Clinician.) When mailing checks to Elinor, please include your E-MAIL info to make thank-yous easier and less expensive for Eddie.
