The Best Week of the Year - Summer Camp Beyond the Scars

Believe it or not, the week of July 30-August 4th marked the Burn Institute’s 26th summer session of Camp Beyond the Scars!

At this special time of year the Burn Institute Board of Directors and staff would like to thank you for your continued support of our very important mission. It is due to our many valued donors and corporate sponsors that over 70 burn-injured children attended Camp Beyond the Scars last summer. We were able to provide much needed support to over 50 families this year as their loved ones received care at the UCSD Burn Center. In addition, over 1,240 seniors had smoke alarms installed free of charge. Over 10,700 school children learned about fire safety through our Fire Safe Kids program and an additional 1,000 people were educated through other fire & burn prevention presentations.

Without our sponsors and individual donors we would not be able to provide the many important Burn Institute programs and services to our community. In addition, we are extremely grateful for our relationship with the fire service including the Firefighter’s Advisory Council to the Burn Institute and the San Diego County Fire Chiefs’ Association whose ongoing support builds

awareness for our efforts as well as raises much needed funds for many programs including Camp Beyond the Scars . This year’s Firefighter Boot Drive raised over $225,000!

We are especially appreciative of our relationship with the UCSD Burn Center. Dr. Bruce Potenza and his excellent staff go above and beyond on a daily basis to meet the needs of the burn-injured patients they care for throughout the year. Also, Dr. Ronn Johnson, University of SanDiego Department of Mental Health and his incredible team of interns from Alliant and Argosy Universities have helped to secure our place as the most successful Juvenile Firesetter program in the country.

We could not exist without the generosity of our community, corporations, donors and our many volunteers. To you we say THANK YOU. We appreciate and value your support at this time of year and each and every day. You have truly made a difference. Happy holidays!

Today was my second day of high school & I decided to wear my camp shirt. A lot of people

came up to me (students and teachers alike) and asked me about it. I told my story and answered all their questions. I got a few remarks but hey, who doesn’t? Over all, I felt good letting people know ‘this is what happened to me, it is a part of me, but it doesn’t label me.’ I’m not sure why I’m writing this but I just wanted to say thank you to my ‘extended family’ for showing me I was never alone in this and that over time, I’d come to accept it.”

BURN INSTITUTE BEACON PREVENTION

Fire and Burn Prevention Facts & TipsFact 80% percent of burn injuries are preventable.

Tip Protect your family with a practiced fire escape plan, and establish an outside meeting area. Download your free plan at: www.burninstitute.org.

The Plan, basic and uncomplicated, is based on the concept of “self-help” and “mutual aid”. The State of California, all 58 counties, and nearly all fire protection agencies are signatory to a Master Mutual Aid Agreement. The Agreement also provides the basis for exchange of mutual aid under any and all other circumstances.

The Plan provides for:

1. Systematic mobilization, organization and operation of fire service resources of the state and its political subdivisions in mitigating the effects of disaster

2. Comprehensive and compatible plans for the expedient mobilization and response of available fire service resources on a local, area, regional and statewide basis

3. Establishment of guidelines for recruiting and training auxiliary personnel to augment regularly-organized fire personnel during disaster operations

4. Annual update of fire service inventory of all personnel, apparatus and equipment in California

5. A plan and communication facilities for the interchange and dissemination of fire-related data, directives, and information between fire officials of local, state and federal agencies

6. Coordination and implementation at state level of government (Chief, State Fire and Rescue Coordinator)

Fire chiefs of each county (Operational Area) elect, from among themselves, an Operational Area Fire and Rescue Coordinator. Operational Area Fire and Rescue Coordinators are responsible for maintaining fire defense resource inventories, area mutual aid plan, and the dispatch of fire and rescue mutual aid resources. They are responsible for annual submission of fire and rescue resource inventories to Regional Fire and Rescue Coordinators.

Within each Operational Area there are zones. In San Diego County we have four zones representing a geographical area of the County. The Fire Chiefs of the County are always in communication with each other, and the Zone Coordinator and Operational Area Coordinator communicate whenever there is a mutual aid need within the County or State. It is this communication and network of collaboration that allows us to manage even the biggest of incidents in California.

For more information on the California Mutual Aid system go to www.oes.ca.gov.

Chief Dave Hanneman President, San Diego County Fire Chiefs’ Association

It can happen in an instant…

You looked away for two seconds, but that is all it took…

Scald injuries are the number one burn injury of children under the age of 11. It takes only 5 seconds for boiling water to inflict third degree burns; hot liquids burn like fire. One cup of coffee, tea or other liquid can scald a child from head to toe.

Burn survivors, especially children, face a long and difficult road to recovery. A child can go through up to 40 surgeries, including post-operation physical therapy, in their life time. The Burn Institute works with survivors and their families every step of the way; ensuring their physical, psychological, and emotional recovery.

It takes only a few seconds for a child’s life to change forever. Parents who are aware of the dangers of scald injuries, and prepared to prevent them can better protect their children from the unthinkable. In addition to supporting survivors, the Burn Institute works hard to prevent these devastating scald injuries from happening. Thanks to a grant from San Diego Gas & Electric, we have been able to educate our community about the dangers of scald injuries throughout the year and the campaign will continue throughout 2013. Please see some helpful safety tips below.

Hot Liquids Burn Like Fire

Often people ask how we in California respond so successfully to major incidents like wildfires and earthquakes. I attribute this to our system of mutual aid. In California, we have the California Emergency Management Agency, Fire and Rescue Division, which is responsible for the development,

implementation, and coordination of the Fire service and Rescue Emergency Mutual Aid Plan.

The holiday season has arrived – a festive and joyous time of year. It’s also a time for baking cookies, dragging out the holiday décor, and enjoying hot apple cider on a chilly night but that means increased risk of scalds and burn injury. Each holiday season in the U.S., fires injure more than 2,000 people and cause nearly $100 million in damage. The Burn Institute would like to offer some simple holiday tips to keep your season safe and reduce your chance of becoming a holiday fire statistic. Find more tips at www.burninstitute.org or www.firesafekid.org.

Tips for a Safe Holiday Season

Working Together in the California Fire Service

COOKING

Cook on rear burners and turn pot handles toward the back of the stovetop.

Avoid wearing loose clothing around open flames and roll-up sleeves.

Never leave food unattended while cooking; when preparing a meal, keep children out of the kitchen area.

When young children are present, avoid using tablecloths; keep hot foods in the center of the table.

LIGHTS

Before leaving your home or going to bed, unplug tree lights and electronic ornaments.

Do not link more than three light strands, unless the directions indicate it is safe.

If lights are frayed or have cracked wiring or broken sockets, dispose and replace the string.

Keep tree well-hydrated and away from heat sources.

CANDLES

Always extinguish candles before leaving a room.

Keep candles out of reach of children and pets; always make sure adults are present.

Use sturdy, non-combustible holders, large enough to collect dripping wax.

Keep candles away from curtains and other flammable materials.

Consider using “flameless” candles as a safe alternative.

SCALDS

Be aware of children in the area before carrying hot liquids; never hold a child while handling a hot beverage.

Turn water heater setting to 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

Always test bath water before bathing; youngsters and the elderly have thinner skin than adults and are more susceptible to burns.

BURN INSTITUTE BEACON BURN SUPPORT

Local Camper & Counselor go to D.C.

Summer Camp: A Counselor’s Story

Every year burn camps from all around the nation are invited to send one camper and one counselor to attend the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Charitable Foundation- Burn Fund’s International Burn Camp held in Washington, D.C. On September 22-29, 2012 those selected to participate

enjoyed an all-expense paid trip provided by the IAFF Burn Foundation, (including all travel, lodging, meals and activities). This year Camp Beyond the Scars selected camper Marius and counselor Tyra as our camp representatives for the IAFF International Burn Camp.

Activities highlighted some of the historic, cultural, and political activities that take place in Washington, D.C. They were able to visit the U.S. Capitol, several Smithsonian museums, Mount Vernon- George Washington’s home for 40 years and other sites. They also attended a special cookout at a local fire station. “People and relationships are what made the trip an irreplaceable experience”, said Tyra. “I personally witnessed several kids grow, blossom, experiment and take actions which demonstrated faith in the program, trust with the adults and courage. For me it was a gift to contribute and witness it all.”

During a public recognition, a 7-year-old camper voluntarily grabbed his younger sister’s hand and escorted her in front of the entire group.

As they swayed side to side with nervousness, hand in hand, he announced that he was proud of his little sister for attending her first camp, for participating in all of the activities and for having fun. The crowd erupted with clapping and admiration as the two timidly walked back into their group lines.

Do you know anybody who has a fear of public speaking and being in the spotlight? These two siblings started off scared but faced their fears because they had been encouraged and empowered by the San Diego Burn Institute’s summer camp program, Camp Beyond the Scars. More than 100 burn survivors, volunteer counselors and staff witnessed an inspiring act of courage that first day of camp.

Later in the week, the same two kids ballroom danced adorably to Frank Sinatra and then ended their talent show performance with the popular dance/song, “Teach Me How to Dougie.” I asked the six-year-old camper where she learned how to dance like that, and her response was, “I don’t know, I just made it up.”

This was my second year as a volunteer camp counselor with the Burn Institute.

Last year I was blessed to be a counselor to teenage girls. We braided hair, applied eye shadow and talked about boys. This year, four other counselors and I were charmed by the “itty bitty” girls, ages 5-8 years.

Collectively, the staff and counselors had the privilege to expose some of the children to activities they had never tried before, such as skateboarding, swimming, jumping off the high dive in the pool, stand up paddling, kayaking, playing outdoor laser tag, archery (throwing darts for the younger ones), walking rope course 60-ft. up in the air, playing disk golf and learning how to Zumba dance.

Some of the burn survivor campers had previous experience and helped the others out. For many of the campers (and counselors!), this was a first time exposure to several of these activities and nearly everybody tried everything.

It was a gift to share new experiences with new faces and a pleasure to see the growth and change of returning campers.

Last year there was a teenage burn survivor who attended her first year of camp.

She was burnt from the waist down from boiling water as an infant. She was shy, introverted, curious and

infinitely polite to everybody. She returned to camp this year, all smiles, and at any given time encouraged the new and younger teenage girl campers.

At the talent show on the last evening of camp, this angel of a girl boosted the younger teenagers as they sang and danced in the spotlight to Bruno Mars’ “Marry You.” She embodied everything Camp Beyond the Scars stood for, being comfortable in your own skin, sharing your experiences to help others, building friendships, living life as a kid and simply having fun!

During the week-long camp, I witnessed children make new friendships, cry from homesickness (the itty bitty girls), learn to solve problems by communicating with each other and try new and scary things.

Regardless of how these young bodies and lives had been devastated from burn injuries and the painful rehabilitation process and healing, they were kids just being kids at Camp Beyond the Scars. For me, I saw firsthand scores of children walk through (or dance through) their fears and demonstrate uninhibited courage.

These experiences are immeasurable in terms of how much they elevate the kids’ confidence.

Marius and Tyra enjoy the sites of D.C.

SAVE THE DATE!

The transition from adolescence to adulthood can be very difficult for anyone let alone those experiencing issues as a result of a severe burn injury. The Burn Institute has established a retreat for young adults, aged 18-25, to provide a mechanism of emotional support from a network of others who have shared and continue to share similar experiences. The Young Adult Burn Survivor Retreat is a peer-focused, support based, stimulating, intensive and empowering journey of self-discovery.

The next Young Adult Retreat is scheduled for April, 2013 (exact date TBD).

Contact Dana Kuhn at 858-541-2277 X21 or [email protected] for more information.

6 EVENTS

E V E N T S F A L L / W I N T E R 2 0 1 2

The 2nd Annual Sunroad Enterprises Chiefs’ Gala & Golf Classic presented by Ashford University took place on September 8th & 10th. In the elegant surroundings of the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine on a warm late

summer evening hundreds of community supporters and fire service personnel joined together in celebration and support of the Burn Institute at the Gala. They mingled while enjoying delicious appetizers and bidding on dozens of unique silent auction items.

The reception was followed by a presentation of colors by the Chula Vista Fire Department Honor Guard accompanied by the San Diego County Firefighters Pipes & Drums. The entire crowd was moved while Amazing Grace was performed by the Pipes & Drums. The National Anthem was sung beautifully by Jamie Edmonds of the Coronado Fire Department.

Guests enjoyed a scrumptious dinner followed by an evening program emceed by Kimberly Hunt from Channel 10 News and Billy Ray Smith from UT-TV. The very spirited live auction featured a wide array of interesting packages including a trip to Tahiti and a Corum watch valued at $8,000. The auction was followed by a moving speech from local burn survivor, Derek Thomas.

The fun didn’t end with the Gala. It continued two days later when the San Diego County Fire Chiefs’ Association joined forces with community and business leaders as they gathered at the prestigious Maderas Country Club and enjoyed a day of golfing.

The group of 144 players worked to master the challenging course, designed by former PGA Tour player Johnny Miller. All golfers were treated to their choice of sunglasses from Maui Jim’s in a special commemorative Chiefs Golf Classic case. After the tournament, sponsors, golfers and guests gathered at the clubhouse for a reception and awards ceremony. Both events raised funds for the Burn Institute’s programs and services including Camp Beyond the Scars for burn-injured children.

A big thank you to Phil’s BBQ for generously providing lunch, and to our beverage sponsors Lightning Brewery and the Four Graces.

When the two days of events concluded, nearly $230,000 was raised for the Burn Institute! We are truly grateful for the support of all of the sponsors, fire service representatives and volunteers that made these events an overwhelming success. We could not have done it without you!

Many thanks to the Honorary Committee which included Rolf & Mary Benirschke, Jerry & Carolyn Davee, Dan & Abby Feldman, Timothy J. Fennell, Bill & Amy Geppert, Mark & Mary Grant, Ben & Ann Haddad, Chief Dave & Sarah Hanneman, Scott & Lore Heath, Trevor & Tracy Hoffman, Randy & Marie Jones, Brian & Chantelle Malarkey, Tex & Kay Meyer, Mike & Barbara Niggli and Bill & Lori Walton.

Farmers Insurance has been a strong supporter of the Burn Institute since 2008 when It was introduced to the organization and learned of the wonderful work that is done for burn survivors as well as the many fire & burn prevention

programs the Burn Institute offers. In 2009, Farmers became the title sponsor of the FIRE EXPO/Firefighter Demo Derby and a major sponsor of the Spirit of Courage Awards and the Chiefs Gala and Golf Classic and has kept the title ever since. Farmers State Executive Director, Charles Dabelgott, the state office staff, agents and district managers have all enthusiastically participated in these events each year.

“As a supporter of the fire and law enforcement services for many years, the recovery programs the Burn Institute provides for burn victims, (children and adults) and the fire prevention programs offered throughout San Diego and beyond, are a wonderful testament to the dedication and support displayed by the Institute’s staff, firefighters and sponsors to help prevent burns and help victims of fires. Congratulations to the Burn Institute for its great work”, commented Jerry Davies, Vice President of Media & Public Relations for Farmers Insurance.

The Burn Institute would like to thank Farmers Insurance for the years of support and the difference they have made in the lives of our local burn survivors and our community.

Trophies were presented to the top departments in each division for funds raised at last spring’s Boot Drive which raised over $225,000 for the Burn Institute. Many thanks for all departments that participated and congratulations to the winners!

Imperial Valley: 13th Annual Fire Ball Dresses Up

2012 Spirit of Courage Awards Banquet

BI – Inland Empire Celebrates 10 Years!

Ashley Constans Named Volunteer Of Year

On October 19th, more than 200 guests from across Imperial County headed to the 2012 Fire Ball gussied up in their finest cocktail attire. Held at the newly remodeled Barbara

Worth Resort & Country Club, this year’s Burn Institute-Imperial Valley Fire Ball was an upscale affair.

The Burn Institute’s 2012 Distinguished Service Award went to Rosa Hernandez for her tireless efforts helping with many Burn Institute fundraisers including Fire Ball and for helping to distribute fire prevention literature throughout the Imperial Valley.

In its “Tribute to the Fire Service,” the BI-IV honored seven fire service professionals from Imperial Valley and neighboring communities. The Exceptional Service Award was presented to: Lieutenant Jesus Sillas; Winterhaven Fire Protection District, Battalion Chief Richard Burns; El Centro Fire Department; Firefighter Luke Hamby; Westmorland Fire Department, Firefighter Jorge Estrada; Imperial County Fire Department, Fire Inspector Humberto Felix; Calexico Fire Department, Firefighter Jesus Hernandez; Yuma Fire Department and Reserve Engineer Ivan Gonzalez; City of Holtville Fire Department. Each honoree received a commemorative plaque.

Following the presentation, guests enthusiastically bid on silent auction items, purchased opportunity drawing tickets, tried their luck at the casino tables (in hopes of winning a vacation getaway for two), and enjoyed the music. When the night was through, more than $15,000 had been raised for the Burn Institute-Imperial Valley.

All proceeds from Fire Ball 2012 will be used locally to service the Imperial Valley and its neighboring communities in fire and burn prevention education and support services.

Thank you to Associate Sponsors San Diego Gas & Electric and Barbara Worth Resort & Country Club and to Contributing Sponsors- Alford Distributing, Cal Energy Operating Company, First Imperial Credit Union and Mark & Marcia Osterkamp.

A big thank you also to the Table Sponsors: City of Holtville, El Centro Firefighters Association, First Imperial Credit Union, Heber Public Utility District, Imperial Valley Fire Chiefs’ Association, Imperial Valley Irrigation District, Imperial County Chargers Fan Club, Imperial County Association of Realtors, Victor Jaime, Ph.D., Jean Montenegro, Rabobank, T.O.P.S., Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians, Westmorland Fire Department and Winterhaven Fire Protection District.

Special thanks to Victor Jaime, Ph.D. and Cheryl Walker who shared presenting duties. Thanks also to Russell Johnston from Endless Thoughts Media and William Quiroz Photography for their services.

This year’s event would not have been possible without the Fire Ball Committee who organized the evening and were responsible for the great auction items and décor. A very special thank you to the following committee members: Rosa Hernandez, Kandyce Johnston, Shannon Johnston, Yanira Olivas and Pamela Volpone-Rasmussen.

The Burn Institute – Inland Empire honored 13 individuals at this year’s Spirit of Courage Awards banquet. The well attended event was

held on Friday, September 21, 2012 at the Historic Riverside Auditorium in Riverside. These thirteen individuals represented four stories of courage, saving others from burn injury and death. Thank you to this year’s recipients for your act of bravery:

Colby Hornick – Corona resident

Mike Molina – Corona resident

Deputy Andy Mata – Riverside County Sheriff ’s Department/Lake Elsinore Station

Officer Jody Kozakowski – Corona Police Department

Officer Joseph Waltman – California Department of Corrections

Captain David Faulkner – Fontana Police Department/Pilot for El Monte Police Department

Officer Michael Weathermon – West Covina Police Department

Detective Al Huff – Highland Police Department

Deputy Pete Gentry – Highland Police Department

Jhon Shuris – Highland resident

Christopher Shuris – Highland resident

The BI-IE also took time to thank and honor our Volunteer Firefighter of the Year, Trevor Wilding of the City of Corona Fire Department, and our Community Business Hero, Robert Visconti and the Gas Company.

The BI-IE has been serving the Inland Empire community for 10 years and celebrated their anniversary at the 25th Annual Wine & Food

Under the Stars on Thursday, October 11, 2012. The BI-IE was selected as a Charity of Choice for this prestigious event.

There was some nervousness on the day of the event due to inclement weather. After all, it is Wine & Food Under the Stars! We are made of sturdy stock in the Inland Empire and guests were content simply knowing the stars were above the massive tent that was protecting them from the rain storm. “I never would have thought, even for a moment, that 300-400 guests would attend for our celebration, we filled the tent even in the torrential downpour!”, stated Sherri Laffey-Long, Executive Director.

Guests circulated the tent tasting cuisine from some of the most prominent restaurants, along with the Pacific Rim Wine Competition’s gold-medal wine and craft beer from Inland Empire’s own Hanger 24 Brewery. They participated in the opportunity drawings, silent and live auctions, raising thousands of dollars to support our community.

It was a wonderful event and the Burn Institute-Inland Empire was honored to be selected to have this opportunity to celebrate our 10 years serving our Inland Empire community!
