Day Out

Here are our new planters! We have straw-berries, peppers, tomatoes and even savory!

For those new to the area I would like to in-troduce our program. We are the Day Out, an Adult Day Program for those Seniors who should not be home alone all day.

We have a great time in here and if you would like more infor-mation please stop in anytime we are open or pick up a brochure from our front table. Now that is it nice and warm we will be enjoy-ing our garden area more often. Hopefully we will have fresh veg-etables to go with our egg breakfasts.

Thank you, and remember to live, laugh and love! Laurie Hochhalter, Day Out Program Director

2 and Friday, August 3. Volunteers are needed for registration and preparing sandwiches for the donors.

• Historical Society – From 10 am to 3 pm on July 15 (ScienceFest), the county will be running

the trolley around a short historic route. Volunteers are needed as guides on the trolley to ex-plain to visitors what they are seeing and to share some of the community’s history. The Histori-cal Society will be providing training. There are two trolleys and the Historical Society is looking for four volunteers to do 2.5 hour shifts. Please contact the LAVA office if you are interested.

• Chamber of Commerce – ScienceFest volunteers needed! The Chamber is in need of volun-teers to help with ScienceFest (in addition to the volunteers for the Historical Society). They need one volunteer at Main Gate Park and one at the information booth at Ashley Pond. Volun-teers will be needed from 9 am to 3 pm for 2 hour shifts. Please contact the LAVA office if you are interested.

• White Rock Senior Center Lunch - With the new lunch program up and running at the WRSC,

volunteers are needed to help at the money table to make change and sell meal tickets. Meal helpers are also needed to help with trays and set up and clean up. Especially needed are vol-unteers willing to be a substitute for those times when regular volunteers are not able to make their shift. Thank you so much to the wonderful volunteers who have already been helping with the lunch program!

• LAVA Office – Volunteers are needed for poster distribution. Posters are delivered twice per

month and we would love to have volunteers willing to substitute or take a regular shift for this important community contribution.

• Home Delivered Meals (LARSO Transportation) – LARSO is looking for volunteers to help

with a short route (about one hour from start to finish, 10:30-11:30 am) to deliver home-delivered meals for approximately nine homebound individuals in the Eastern/Downtown area. We’re looking for volunteers who can either take one day a week, or who can be a substitute for when a regular volunteer cannot make their shift. Volunteers will use their own vehicles for delivering.

• Bradbury Science Museum Association – Volunteers are needed to staff the retail kiosk at the

Bradbury Science Museum. Proceeds from these sales help to provide funding for STEM field trips and workshops for neighboring and underserved communities.

• Family Strengths Network – FSN is beginning a new program called “adopt-a-grandparent”,

matching senior volunteers with young families for intergenerational socializing. If you are inter-ested in being a part of this program please call the LAVA office or Family Strengths Network at 662-4515.

LAVA Volunteer Program Survey Thank you so much to those taking the time to fill out the LAVA online survey sent via e-mail (to the volunteers for whom we have an e-mail address) on June 2. The survey closed on June 30 and the number of responses far exceeded our expectations. We will evaluate the results to find out how we can help to make your volunteer experience an even better one!

E-Mail Addresses Speaking of e-mail addresses… I have begun to send out some information via e-mail and have up-dated e-mail addresses as I get them. In addition to some general informational e-mails, I would al-so like to begin to send out quarterly reminders about hours for those of you who would like a re-minder. If you have not received an e-mail from me, please let me know if you would like to be in-cluded.

If you would like a complete listing of volunteer opportunities, please contact the LAVA of-fice at [email protected], and we will be happy to e-mail you a copy of both the LARSO volunteer opportunities and those at the stations with which LAVA partners.

Thank you everyone for all that you do for our community! Happy summer to you! Linda and Sarah
