38th annual SAC. JAZZ FESTIVAL & JUBILEE

May 27–30, 2011 – Memorial Day Wknd.

This past weekend, I had the honor of attending the 6th annual Tra-

ditional Jazz Youth Band Festival. This is what it’s all about, folks: amaz-ing music played by the jazz musicians of tomorrow—and they hold their own even as youth musicians! Special thanks to Festival Director Steve Roach, and Festival Coordinator Yvonne Au for making this event truly special. STJS strives to educate the community about traditional jazz, and nowhere is this more apparent than at the Youth Band Festi-val. We heard some truly special musi-cians, but also enjoyed the feedback and evaluations by the clinicians (locally and nationally recognized jazz stars). If you missed it, plan on getting an early ticket for 2012. Also, special thanks to the tireless volunteers that helped make the event a success.

How about that Crab Feed? Once again, Paula Vance (with huge help from Kathy Becker and a team of com-mitted volunteers) put together a won-derful event that ultimately benefits the causes of STJS. It’s always wonderful to get together to eat a big meal, enjoy a drink or two, and of course, listen to

great music. The Red Skunk Jipzee Swing Band rocked the house and had folks tapping their toes or dancing the night away. Be sure to catch one of their sets at the Sacramento Jazz Festival & Jubilee.

Speaking of the Sac. Jazz Festival & Jubilee, plans are coming along. Look for the second year of partnering with the Northern California Ace Dealers (your local ACE Hardware Store). We’re working with the folks from Alaska Airlines, too. Check out Alaska Airline’s super cheap rates from Sacra-mento to Hawaii—but not before you get your Festival & Jubilee tickets!

Be sure to patronize the businesses that help the Sacramento Jazz Festival & Jubilee carry on: (to name a few) The Golden 1 Credit Union, the good folks from DBI (Coors and Coors Light), the CA State Railroad Museum (a part of CA State Parks), Set It Aside recycling, and the Sacramento Metro-politan Arts Commission (S.M.A.C.) I’ll keep you posted about other new Sponsor Partners. You can always catch the latest Festival and Jubilee news at www.sacjazz.com

President’s Messageby Tom Duff STJS . PRESIDENT

< to m . d u f f @ h p. co m >

On February 2nd , Ground Hog Day 2011, Punxsutawney Phil came out of his burrow and did not see his shadow.

According to tradition, we’ll have an early spring. This is great news for the Sacramento Jazz Fans because in 2011, we have some stellar talent and some very hot jazz to entertain you.

I heard many positive comments about the Jan. 29 Crab Feed featuring the Red Skunk Jipzee Swing Band. My thanks go out to Paula Vance and Kathy Becker, who spent count-less hours to make this a successful fundraiser for STJS.

The TJYBF (youth festival) was also very successful. It was wonderful to see the talent of these elementary, middle, high school and college performers learning from the best. The clinicians really know how to draw out the best from musi-cians at all levels, and that is the true meaning of educating. Yvonne Au and all her volunteers did a great job in giving us this event for a 6th year. If you would like to sponsor a young musician or a youth band, please contact Yvonne.

Planning for the 2011 Sac. Jazz Festival continues, and with the predictions of Punxsutawney Phil, the weather will be per-fect. The music will be absolutely great as well. There will be more diversity of music than you may have seen in the past, with some new and exciting talent. Visit the website or follow us on Facebook for updates. The office staff is really working hard to provide you with interesting acts, mixing some of your old favorites with new talent not previously seen at this festi-val. I hope you will enjoy what we have in store for you.

Attention Festival Volunteers: Please complete the Vol-unteer Information Form on that can be downloaded from www.sacjazz.com in the Volunteer section (lower right). Also please let your manager know if you would like to purchase a volunteer t-shirt, be available for $10. The shirt makes you recognizable as a volunteer and is a great collectable souvenir.

Visit <sacjazzcamp.org>, the STJS Trad. Jazz Camp web-site for 2011 details: Adult Camp runs from July 31–Aug. 5; Youth Camp runs from Aug. 7–13. Sign up by April 1st. 2

Notes... (cont.) While you’re at it, check out www.sacjazz.org and sign-up for the SacJazz-E-News (if you haven’t already). The E-News offers timely news with full-color images, and active links to relevant websites and information. If you signed up but haven’t received it, there may be a problem with your e-mail address; please write and let us know at <[email protected]> Thanks to Nancy Giffin for volunteering to put together a great monthly e-blast (in addition to all the other things she does)!

Be sure to check out Jazz Sunday in March and April. With world renowned guests like Allan Vaché and Dan Barrett, great music and good times are, once again, guaranteed!

Last month, I acknowledged some key volunteers that donate their time and efforts in the STJS Office. I neglected to mention Linda LaFranchi! Thanks, Linda. Your help at the office and at the Festival & Jubilee are so very important...and appreciated!

I love and appreciate the spirit of volunteerism and passion-ate support for jazz music that I get to see everyday. Thanks to all of you who help keep this music alive, and for helping to bring smiles to so many people! 2

Workshop, which will precede the Jazz at Chautauqua jazz party in September. This Workshop will feature a staff of eight respected jazz artists, coaching both student performers and amateur musicians toward improving their skills.

Born in Pasadena, California, and raised in nearby Costa Mesa, Dan Barrett began playing the trombone at the age of eleven, and the cornet shortly thereafter. In high school he formed his first group, the Back Bay Jazz Band. This sextet pre-sented the music of King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton and other early jazz greats to Southern California audiences. During this time, Dan played many local jobs with the great New Orleans musicians Ed “Montudie” Garland, Alton Purnell, Mike DeLay, Joe Darensbourg, Nappy Lamare, and Barney Bigard, hearing about the “old days” first-hand.

In 1977, Dan made the first of many trips to Europe, to appear at the Breda International Jazz Festival in Holland. Sev-eral passports later, he has become a welcome guest at dozens of jazz festivals abroad, and has formed close friendships with many musicians overseas.

Dan and his wife, Laura, moved to New York City in 1983. He spent a busy couple of years touring with and writing for the Widespread Jazz Orchestra, and later was a frequent guest at Eddie Condon’s jazz club and other Manhattan night-spots. It was at Eddie Condon’s that Benny Goodman first heard Dan play, and shortly thereafter asked him to join what would be the King of Swing’s last orchestra. While in New York, Dan also co-led the popular Howard Alden–Dan Barrett Quintet (the ABQ). Dan has played both valve and slide trombones for many motion pictures, including The Cotton Club and Brigh-ton Beach Memoirs, as well as Woody Allen’s Mighty Aphro-dite, Everyone Says I Love You, and Bullets Over Broadway. If you look fast, you can see Dan on the screen in the latter film. (He’s featured a bit more in the movie Wild Man Blues. This award-winning film documents a three-week tour of Europe by Woody Allen’s New Orleans Jazz Band.)

Dan has performed four times at Carnegie Hall: with Woody Herman (and the New York Pops Orchestra), with Joe Bushkin, and in two tributes to Louis Armstrong, respectively. Additionally, he has composed and arranged the theme music for the American Playhouse television production of “Rocket to the Moon,” and Christopher Munch’s motion picture star-ring Jacqueline Bisset, The Sleepy Time Gal. Dan still finds the time to appear at numerous jazz parties and festivals through-out the United States, Canada, Europe, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Japan.

Barrett has recorded under his own name, and with many respected jazz artists. A partial list includes Doc Cheatham,

Dan Barrett (cont.) Scott Hamilton, Bob Haggart, Rosemary Clooney, Ruby Braff, Joe Bushkin, Jay McShann, Buck Clayton and Benny Good-man! Dan is especially proud of his associations with Messrs. Clayton and Goodman, for each of whom he played lead trom-bone and was a featured soloist.

In addition to his freelance activities, Dan continues to pursue his interest in arranging and orchestration. One of his more ambitious projects was scoring the “St. Louis Blues” for jazz band and symphony orchestra. His writing can be heard on many Arbors Records CDs, including I Saw Stars, Moon Song, and Blue Swing (all featuring vocalist Rebecca Kilgore), and Look What I Found, with vocalist Daryl Sherman. An earlier recording (for another label), arranged by Barrett and featuring the great Bobby Short, garnered a Grammy nomination.

John S. Wilson of The New York Times wrote of Dan: “(He) is one of the delights here, a melodist, a colorist who knows how to use a plunger mute with taste and, in total, a player Duke Ellington would have loved.”

In 1996, Dan and his family returned to Southern California. He has since been nominated for the 1999 Bell Atlantic Jazz Award for “Trombonist of the Year,” and came in on top in a 1999 poll as The Mississippi Rag readership’s “favorite living trombonist!” He is mentioned with high praise in the new Bio-graphical Encyclopedia of Jazz (by Ira Gitler and the late Leon-ard Feather), as well as the Guinness Who’s-Who of Jazz.

Dan currently tours the majority of the time with the Rebecca Kilgore Quartet, an ensemble consisting of longtime friends and musical cohorts Rebecca “Becky” Kilgore, Eddie Erickson and Joel Forbes. It is the Rebecca Kilgore Quartet that is featured on the soundtrack of the aforementioned film, “The Sleepy Time Gal.” With a total of five recordings together (four under the name of “BED”), the Rebecca Kilgore Quartet continues to gain friends and fans at its numerous appearances at festivals and jazz parties both in the USA and abroad.

The all-star assemblage Blue Swing combines the Rebecca Kilgore Quartet with four other all-star performers. Blue Swing has been getting together for gigs (and a recording) for a number of years, and features some of the finest “two-way” players (those who excel at ensemble and solo work) around the scene these days. For a fun and exciting jazz group at any private party or event, both the Rebecca Kilgore Quartet and Blue Swing are “only a phone call away.”

Today, jazz is not the popular music that it was years ago, and Dan greatly appreciates the support that STJS has shown him and many other jazz musicians who have been presented over the years. Dan says, “I first learned to play at Southern California jazz society meetings, and now it’s societies like the STJS that are helping to keep the music alive.” 2

Snack Bar help wanted

Jazz Sunday has been offering a variety of snacks thanks to a small group of volunteers led by Elinor Hackett. They

need more volunteers to help for an hour or two (after the first guest set), or better yet, take over for one Sunday (planning and coordinating the food and volunteers).

They would also appreciate suggestions for the snack bar menu. So far, they have served ice cream sundaes, brownie sundaes, cheese & fruit trays, and have plans for more ice cream and ice cream sandwiches as the weather warms up. Please contact Elinor: jaznanor48@ yahoo.com 2

Many, many happy people at February Jazz Sunday. When you know the person next to you is ALSO there to see Bria and Draga and Eddie and

Jason, you just pull in your elbows and scrunch up and ENJOY the music! Non-stop fun and fabulous music.

Since it was the day after TJYBF (Trad. Jazz Youth Band Festival), we had two exciting youth band sets along with three—count ‘em, 3—guest star sets. The Jazzinators (ages 13-18) are sponsored by the East Bay Trad. Jazz Society and mentored by the Mission Gold JB. They were so enthusiastic—the perfect kick-off for the day. See page 13 for lineup. They were actually TWO bands at TJYBF, but coalesced into one fun bunch on Sunday.

They brought a BIG crew with them—Mike Messier; Alan Fernando with wife and tiny charming baby girl; Dominic Smith’s grandfather Michael Novotny; Kathy Burke; Marina Kagawa; Donna D’Ambrosio; Dexter Williams; Rex Thuan (and those were only the ones I could catch). Thank you to ALL the families supporting all our young musicians. Director John Soulis joined the parasol parade, and Sharon Soulis handed out promo materials for the band.

High Altitude Dixieland Jazz Band (ages 16-24) from Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado was on Set 3. See page 13 for lineup. Instruc-tor Dr. Robert Barrett was justifiably pleased. This is another unequivocally TRAD band; musicians knew their stuff and gave us a joyful, toe-tapping set.

They were followed by an impromptu performance by Shelley, Bill & Eddie, at the top of their form. Not much I can say about our guest stars that hasn’t already been said better by somebody bigger than me. In fact, Don and

Marilyn Jassowski were there especially to see Draga in spite of Don’s shoul-der surgery just 3 weeks ago. And you can bet Joe Burgess, he of the Jubilee Telephone Crew, was there for the guest stars. Likewise Mike and Angela Donovan—they’ve been to jazz festivals, but this was their first Jazz Sunday.

Speaking of first visits, David Harmon is 13 months old and made his first visit, with Mama Vicki, after moving back to California in August. David is Alicia & Kurtis Fulbright’s grandson—so fragile when he was born, but so interested in everything around him now. Alicia shocked us all by announcing her retirement from STJS and Jubilee volunteering after 30 years! After meet-ing David, I can see why she wants to spend more time with him. Thank you for all your work in all areas over the years, Alicia & Kurt. (Of course, they will still be around—they’re not retiring from the music, for heaven’s sake!)

Slightly older attendees: Theo Carvajal (will be 2 next month) and sister Beatrice (will be 4 in June). We’re so pleased parents Lisa & Nick are expos-ing them to OKOM. Then there were the two whirlwinds: Kaylana Ventittelli (Joey V’s daughter) and Azaria McCauley (Mabel Burhans’ granddaugh-ter). They were careful never to run into anybody, but they had a LOT of fun all OVER the place. Joyful to watch.

An even older “kid”—Karl Munz’ son, Mike—was visiting from the Bay Area. He got to hear his Dad sing “Say It Isn’t So” in the Gold Card Room during the Vocal Set. Karl was one of 26(!) vocalists scheduled—unfortunately Bob Sumners had to scratch, so 25 vocalists—WOW. GCR Honcho Paula Dula really kept the set moving. Lisa Ellis said it was the one-year anniver-sary of receiving her Gold Card. She sang “My Funny Valentine,” the only Valentine song but not the only love song. Wally Hawkins introduced “‘Deed I Do” by saying it was his 19th Anniversary. Jane Reinmuth dedicated “It Had To Be You” to “the man who saved her from spinsterhood!” Claude Purcell’s “Sentimental Reasons” prompted Norm Echols to confide that, when he was first married, he used to sing it to Jan, accompanying himself on the banjo.

We also had “When Somebody Loves You” (Christine Rowe); “Secret Love” (Bob Shea); and “Too Misty and Too Much in Love” by Margie Ruiz.

Wasn’t all hearts and flowers, though... Edd Burhans put the moves to “Quando, Quando”—women cried and strong men swooned! Barbara Paulus sold “Secondhand Rose” like CRAZY—what a hoot. Melissa Collard did “Meet Me Where They Play the Blues,” and Larry Sikorski did “How Little We Know.” Alan Ginter was a surprise with “I’m Walkin’,” and Gwenetta Brooks ended the set with a perfect “That’s All.”

Then Larry Sikorski, Harry Duvall, Edd Burhans and Paula Dula, on behalf of all the vocalists, presented pianist “Maestro” Ken Meyers with a plaque commemorating the December 8 performance of his composition by the Jesuit High School Orchestra. Ken gives much support and encouragement to our vocalists, along with Jim Roberson, Charlie Hull and Alan Ginter.

Tressa Dahlberg came in from Clarksburg to sing “Summertime.” She has a new CD out. We also heard from Rachel Jackson, Dorit Benjamini, Harry Duvall, Clint Ritchie, Pat Galyean, Jay Casl and Vicki Tama.

Dorit was also keeping an eye on Eddi, who seems to have made a good recovery from his hip repair. Ned Poffinbarger was also on deck, following his early December surgery. Now that I think about it, Mary Stewart was here LAST month, after her surgery. Glad you’re all back where you belong.

Did you see? Did you see? Marcus Crowder named our own Vivian Lee in the Sac Bee’s list of 18 Reasons We Love Sacramento. Yes, she IS.

Steve Barbone just gushed on the Dixieland Jazz Mailing List about Espe-ranza Spalding, Grammy winner for Best New Artist. “Perhaps not OKOM, and not limited to jazz, but she is a jazz musician. You go, girl.”

We were so pleased to see Joe Walton after a two-month absence, but so very sorry to hear of the death of his 27-year-old daughter, Heather Michele Carr, killed in a car crash last November. Our deepest sympathies, Joe.

GCR Set 1 was led by Jared Blum and Ken Champion. See page 13 for lineup. Jared was awarded a $500 Kenton O. Smith Scholarship at TJYBF. We thanked Lauralee Humes, sponsor of that award, because Jared has been a regular at STJS for YEARS, and we feel that the award reflects well on us. Jared was only one of several local scholarship winners; check out page 10.

The Stan Band—love the name—was featured on GCR Set 2. See page 13. The Stan would be Jarmolowicz, with Joe Berry on reeds and Nathan Bickart on piano, joined by Melissa Collard on vocals. A winner, for sure.

Bria joined Charlie Gehlbach, Jay Paulus, Bill Bua, Dave Chan, Eddi Benjamini and Dan Lobay on GCR Set 4—you think that swung some? Jerry Ford, Tom Carpenter, Frank Lindskoog, Pearl Nicolino, Dave Siebert and Susan Phillips finished up the CGR schedule for the day.

I talked to Bill Pesce, escorting wife Elaine’s sister, Eloise DiPietro, vis-iting from Moraga. Mark & Cat Stadlar said this was their first Jazz Sunday, although Mark’s Dad, Frank Stadler plays 2 or 3 times a week with his band, the Seacoast Stompers, in Boston. Mark just started taking piano lessons. And Max Hayes is a guitarist from El Dorado High School. He said he’s already been pointed in the direction of the Tailgate Room.

Happy Anniversary to bartender Felipe Gutierrez! March will mark his 30th year at the Dante Club! What say we all tip him 30% in March?

We had a nice spread of ages in the Tailgate Room, although Set 1 was uniformly on the middle to older side—Ira Greenstein, Burt Wilson, Tom Carpenter, Frank Lindskoog, Dave Sieber, Greg Ayala and Claude Pur-cell. Set 2, though, had Andrew Stephens, Bryce Korte, and Jared Blum, along with John Soulis, Howard Pearson, Jan Buhlert, Greg Collver, Carl Warmdahl, Pam Lenhart and Vicki Tama.

Set 3 was Nolan Cyr, Ammi Racket, Mary McHenry and Jacob Swed-low, with Rich Lockwood there for a little balance. (cont. on page 10)

Outstanding Musician — Music Lessons Awards ($250 each) Funded by the STJS Foundation

Kenton O. Smith Traditional Jazz Scholarship ($500 each) Funded by Lauralee Humes

Outstanding College Musician: Jared Blum, American River College

Outstanding Jazz Club/Private College Musician: Nathaniel Holzgrafe, Ohlone Dixieland Jazz Band

Outstanding Sac State University Musician: Alex Reiff, CSUS Jazz Combo I

Bob Draga Clarinet Award Outstanding High School Clarinet

($500 each) Funded by the STJS Foundation

MRH: Matthew Ricafrente, Fremont Christian Room 151: Andrew Block, J Street Studios

STJS YOUTH Trad. Jazz Camp — 3 Partial-Scholarships ($300 value each) Funded by the STJS Foundation:

Middle School: Nolan Cyr, Arden MSHigh School (MRH): Alex Remiticado, Rio Americano HS

H.S. (Rm. 151): Drew Thomsen, J Street Studios

STJS ADULT Trad. Jazz Camp — Half-Scholarship ($400 value) Funded by STJS:

Jeff Worrall, Western State College

The bands selected for encore performances were:

Arden Middle School, Rio Americano High School, Crazy Eights (J Street Studios), and American River College.

Set 4 had Brett Jackson on drums, with Ken Champion, Larry Tyrell, Bob Noren, Billie Menz, Dave Sieber, Karl Munz and Judy Noren on vocals.

TG 5 was Jared Blum, Bob Gonzalez, Pat Galyean, Ned Poffin-barger, Mike Melnikov, Jack Scott and Jane Reinmuth. And Set 6 had, by age progression, Anna Chan on drums, Bryce Korte, Jared Blum, Brandon Au, and Greg Sabin, followed by (see page 13 for exact lineup) Dave Chan, Bill Au, Jim Pryce and Jane Reinmuth. A well-rounded group to end the day.

We don’t see Dennis & Judy Tusboi often enough. And we were glad to see Jean Gray in attendance. She was there with boyfriend Frank Scalo and caretaker Kristin Sommer. Jean was enjoying Eddie Erickson’s lovely “Rockin’ Chair” but wishing she had requested “What a Wonderful World” in time. It was her late husband’s favorite song.

Okay, okay. You didn’t really think I was going to just ignore our guest stars, did you? Just kidding, really. Could talk about them for HOURS. Set 2 was Bria, Draga and Eddie. See pg. 13 for backup musi-cians. On Set 5, Bob invited two of our finest young musicians, Bryce Korte and Andrew Stephens, to shine on Main Stage.

The thing about Bob Draga and Eddie Erickson (and Dendle, for that matter) is that they can have you laughing so hard your sides hurt, and the next minute they take your breath away with the beauty of their music. Eddie’s “Rockin’ Chair” was lovely, and Draga’s “Louisiana Fairytale” was achingly sweet—so was his shout-out to his good friend (and our Veep), Ron Jones. Eddie joined Bill Dendle in dedicating their goofy duet to Patron Member Scotte Doggett, who donated all his instru-ments to the Jazz Camp when he gave up playing music.

As Jane Butler & Keith White said, Eddie and Bob and Bill are SO entertaining—always something new. George Fairbrook, Cynthia Lambert and Vick Vickland were appreciating them for their danceable music. The three of them are International Folk Dancers. Cynthia and Vick are also members of Vintage Dancers of Sacramento. Lots of fun to watch! Jerome Sprague & Kathy McDonald thought we could use MORE danceable music. Could be.

Bria was the Guest Clinician at TJYBF and leader of the band on Sets 2 and 4. We saw a WHOLE new side to her. Not surprised that she took charge and ran the sets so competently, or that she blew the roof off the Dante Club. No, it was the hula-hoop—honest. Bria now lives in New York; just as every musician who ever lived in New York, she and trombonist Emily hit the subway to earn extra dough. Apparently two gorgeous young women playing excellent music is not enough to get the attention of your sophisticated New York subway rider, but add a hula-hoop and va-voom! It certainly brought down the STJS house!

While I can’t guarantee that Allan Vaché will be hula-hooping, I can guarantee that he will play splendid music with excellent musicians, and you should be on hand to hear him. See you March 13. (Remember that Banjo-Rama is March 24-27. See ad on page 4.) 2

Letter to the Editor

THE FRIDAY NIGHT JAM at ROUND TABLE on Kiefer Blvd [on the eve of our TJYBF] has

become an overwhelming success—standing room only!! The host band with special guests Bria Skon-berg, Bob Draga, Eddie Erickson, and Jason Wanner certainly spurred the young musicians to a frenzy. After a few numbers, Edd Burhans called up young musicians by 2s or 3s to augment the “old timers.” It was a real thrill for all of them. If this gets any bigger, we’ll need the Convention Center, but none can replace the atmosphere, the good pizza, and the generous donation from Round Table to TJYBF!

Elinor Hackett[.STJS.Voluntter.and.coordinator.for.our.Round.Table.events.].

Pre-TJYBF Jam (L-R): Bill Dendle, Ron Jones, Eddie Erickson, Bria Skonberg, Jason Wanner, Bob Draga.

We truly appreciate thesupport of these sponsors(above) who make it possibleto enjoy our 38th annualSac. Jazz Festival & Jubilee
