Day Out

Here is a picture of Evelyn who will be 99 this month! She has been attending the Day Out Program the longest of any of our current par-ticipants. She says she always has a good day when she comes here. We grow our to-matoes in the summer especially for her. She had quite the garden at her home in Alabama! I would like everyone to know that though some of our participants do suffer from some form of dementia, we have several whose minds are as sharp as when they were in the work force. This mix of abilities is vital to the success of the program. Participation due to a medical issue, medication reminders, fall risk, socialization, dietary requirements —there are many reasons why they participate in our program. The patience exhibited by our able minded participants with those who are not is amazing. We always have fun ac-tivities and conversations going on all day long. Joy and laughter is the easiest prescrip-tion for health and happiness, and that is my number one goal for this program. I appreci-ate everyone who comes in to visit and partic-ipate in our activities. Thank you to those who have donated bingo prizes and easier to do puzzles. Please keep them coming! We now have our activity calendar posted outside the Day Out and also on our website. I hope that everyone who participates in Facebook will go to the Betty Ehart Senior Center page and “like” us. Please follow our page. We are always posting photos of current activi-ties. Remember: Live, Laugh, and Love! Thank you, Laurie Hochhalter, Day Out Program Director

Donations Requested due to funding cuts. We were notified by the State Adult Pro-tective Services office that funds for our Day Out Program were being cut by $6,300 for this year. Every month we bill about $7,000 to the state for this program. We are disappointed that the most vulnerable participants in this vi-tal program may have to reduce the hours that they can attend. Just months ago, we expand-ed the hours that this program is open (7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. weekdays) in order to accom-modate families who are working and caring for frail seniors. If we are able to raise the amount that was cut, we will not have to ask these families and individuals to reduce their hours. Please consider a financial gift to LARSO for the Day Out program. With Appreciation, The LARSO Board

Spotlight on a Station – Self Help Self Help has been around for nearly 50 years! This non-profit helps those in need who are in emergency situations, such as recently losing a job or having medical bills that they are una-ble to pay - the idea is to provide some financial help to indi-viduals or families temporarily. Self Help and RSVP (now LA-VA) formed a partnership in 1974. LAVA helps to recruit sen-ior volunteers for both the Self Help program and to help with bell-ringing during the holidays. Self Help is the Los Alamos County representative agency and raises funds through bell-ringing to help Los Alamos County residents with basic needs such as food, shelter, and utilities. Smith’s has been very gra-cious in providing a place to ring the bells each year in White Rock and Los Alamos. Last year, the funds raised amounted to $19,000! Volunteers are always needed for the bell-ringing and are scheduled for 2 hour shifts, from 10:00 in the morning to 6:00 in the evening. The bell-ringing begins the Friday after Thanksgiving and continues through Christmas Eve. If you are interested in volunteering for bell-ringing, please contact the LAVA office at 662-8923, or Ellen Morris Bond, Executive Director for Self Help, at 662-4666. Self Help is also in need of 2 or 3 volunteers who can help in the Self Help office with answering the phones and some clerical projects.

LAVA Quilters The LAVA Quilters made their semi-annual trip to Santa Fe and Albuquerque on October 12 to drop off handmade quilts and knitted items. The Youth Shelter of Santa Fe was delighted to receive 24 quilts and one crocheted blanket, and the Ronald McDonald House in Albuquerque received 46 soft knit hats, (including baby hats), four fleece hats, 32 quilts, 13 flannel baby quilts and 27 slipper sets. Many thanks to the LAVA Quilters who put in countless hours making these wonderful quilts. These donations brighten the lives of many people deal-ing with difficult sit-uations in their lives. The LAVA

Quilters meet at the BESC every Wednesday from 8:30 – 11:30 am. Stop by sometime to see what they are working on!

New Stations LAVA is pleased to announce three new nonprofit partners:

The Manhattan Project Historic Park – this newest national park is getting up and running and is in need of volunteers to greet volunteers at the Visitor Station and to rove the Ashley Pond and Historic District. If you have a knack for history, or are interested in learning more about Los Alamos’s unique history and would like to volunteer, please contact the LAVA office.

Bradbury Science Museum Association – this newly designated nonprofit’s mission is to serve neighboring and underserved communities through field trips, workshops and STEM educa-tion efforts. Partial funding for these endeavors will be through proceeds from a gift shop in the Bradbury Science Museum. Volunteers are needed for two-hour shifts to staff the shop.

Family Strengths Network (FSN) – FSN provides educational and fun activities to all types of families, parents, teens, and children. Volunteers are needed for special events throughout the year, such as “Lucky Ducky Day’ in the early fall. Volunteers are also needed to help with their “meal train” program, which provides meals to families with newborns.

Please let LAVA know if you are interested in volunteering with any of these organizations.

Other Volunteer Opportunities Festival of Trees – volunteers are needed to help with this year’s Festival of Trees. We need

greeters, volunteers to staff the LARSO table and volunteers to sell tickets and collect the donations from each vendor for the raffle. The Festival is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 12, from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Cookies & Cocoa & Tree Decorating – would you like to help decorate the Christmas tree in the great room at the BESC? We’ve reserved Monday afternoon, Nov. 28 from 2:00 – 4:00 pm for volunteers to decorate the tree and enjoy cookies and cocoa. Please join us!

White Rock Senior Center Meal Helpers – we are continuing to sign up volunteers to help with the congregate meals at the newly renovated White Rock Senior Center. If you are interested in becoming a meal helper or money helper (most likely starting in January, 2017), please give LAVA a call or e-mail.

Teen Tech Tutoring If you would like help with your smart phone, laptop, tablet, or iPod, please call the LAVA office for an afternoon appointment at either the BESC or WRSC with one of our wonderful tech savvy teens!

An Open Letter to the HELP Volunteer Drivers: Thank you, dear friends, for all that you have helped us. You helped Joe come and go from dialysis for 12 whole months, three times per week with so much friendship and charisma, and you left Ra-mona, Joe’s mother, at home without a worry. Like to Drive? Want to work for us? The Senior Center is recruiting for substitute drivers. Several times each month, we need people to fill in during the hours between 7:30 a.m.—4 p.m. Monday-Friday and occasionally evenings or Saturdays. Responsibilities may include delivery of meals, routine trips bringing seniors to our cen-ters, to the store or doctor appointments or driving for group day trips. We provide the vehicles. Applicants must have a good driving record and be able to interact professionally with patrons indi-vidually and in small groups. Experience with wheelchairs helpful. Applications are available at the Betty Ehart Center, 1101 Bathtub Row, Los Alamos.
