JANUARY PROGRAM UPDATE

What a fabulous send off to our 2019 sewing season by our guild! Thank you to our own Patti Dance for an incredibly inspiring presentation of her creative journey. Doesn't she have the perfect name? Patti makes the fabric Dance across her artistic pieces.

Thank you also to Carola's Thread Company for making the sea voyage from Sechelt. I am sure that we each found some fabrics and or threads we couldn't live without.

Let us all welcome 2020 with our annual January Garage Sale! There are 13 tables spoken for so bring your "I need" list and spending money.

Mickey and Ionne will introduce us to a "Quilt Challenge" and we have until our June meeting to complete our creation for judging. This, I think you will agree, will be a fun challenge....prizes are involved.

Happy New Year everyone!

BLOCK OF THE MONTH

Block of the Month/Scrap Harvest

Post-holiday we are usually full of resolutions! Also full are the scrap baskets lurking in the sewing area. Let's make them into 6 1/2" blocks. I am getting a nice collection of blocks to make into Comfort Quilts. Each guild meeting for the next three months I'll have a spot to accept blocks, any design, as long as they're 6 1/2" square. Please put your name into the draw for a prize drawn after the break at the evening meeting.

This month's block suggestion makes two at once: Take two different 7" squares. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the lighter one. Place the squares RST and sew 1/4" on either side of the diagonal line. Cut them apart on the drawn line. Open and press the seam to the darker fabric. Trim the blocks to 6 1/2". Voila! Two done.

Thanks for your continuing support for this effort.

Cheers,

~ Sara Medd

QUILT SHOW 2021—16 MONTHS TO GO

Raffle Prizes

We had exceptional entries for our 2021 Show, representing all types of quilting styles and techniques. Thank you to everyone who sent in an application and to the members of the Raffle Quilt Selection Committee, Donna Paisley, Fran Henney, Tracey Turner, and Joyce McLellan. The prizes that have been selected portray our guild’s talent, commitment to outstanding quality and the Show Theme of Colour the World.

The Show in 2021 will have 5 prizes, yes, 5 chances available to those lucky individuals who purchase tickets. If you would like to see a picture of the quilts as they are completed check out the Guild Website under the Show section periodically for an update.

In 2021 we will have for the first time a Grand Show Theme Prize, Gravity, a queen size quilt that has been created by Janet Finch and quilted by Lynne Schroeder. It is a perfect match to the Show Theme. A picture will be available on our website soon.

The next prize is also a queen size quilt that will be created by DiAnne Hill and others entitled The Queen and Her Court.

Charlotte Hitchin has created the third prize, an outstanding hand appliqued and hand quilted lap quilt. The next prize, is a lap quilt as well that has been created by Lola Denesyk. The quality and attention to detail is amazing. Pictures of these quilts will be available on the web site soon.

The final prize will be created by Quita Peverley, an art creation from an original photo of hers. Can’t wait to see this creation.

The Show still needs a few key Lead Volunteers. Please consider taking on one of these roles for the show! I am committed to making the roles manageable and fun!

1. Lobby Set- up and Welcome –We all know how important first impressions are. If you have some creative thoughts, or just want to tweak the set-up from the last show, this role is for you. We have an excellent template to help with this role.

2. Signage Internal and External –We know how critical it is to place information and direction in the best location to have a successful show. If finding your way is your thing – then this the position should be right up your alley. This could be one position, two individuals co-leading or two positions.

3. Show Events – Anne Pelton has taken the lead for this for the show but she really would like someone to work along side with her.

If you would like to learn more about the positions listed above or to volunteer, please, again please, contact Barbara at [email protected] or call 1-250-390-8003

If you are thinking of using the Show’s logo can you let either Elaine Eddie (Public Relations for the Show), Debbie Scheibel (Show secretary) or myself Barbara Korabek (Show convener) know. Just so we can keep track of how/who is creatively using the logo.

THOSE MUCH REQUESTED GLUTEN FREE BUTTER TARTS

Corn Flour Pie Crust 6 tbsp butter or margarine, slightly softened ¼ cup brown sugar 1 egg, slightly beaten 1 tbsp vinegar 1 cup GF flour mix (purchased mix, or: 2/3 cup rice flour, 3 tbsp potato or corn starch, 2 tbsp tapioca starch) 1 tsp xanthan gum 1/3 cup corn flour ½ tsp salt Cream together butter and sugar. Add egg and vinegar. Whisk together dry ingredients, add to wet. Mix until it all comes together. (My method: use the food processor. Put butter/margarine, brown sugar, egg and vinegar in food processor bowl and pulse until mixed. Add dry ingredients. Pulse until mixed, then run processor until pastry comes into a ball.) Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for about 30 minutes. To roll out, spread some GF flour on your pastry board, and also on top of the pastry before rolling. If/when the rolling pin starts to stick, sprinkle on a bit more flour as necessary. Makes 2 8” pie crusts or 20 to 24 tarts.

Butter Tarts 1/3 cup butter/margarine 1 cup brown sugar 2 tbsp milk ½ cup raisins ½ cup walnuts (optional, but I always use them) 1 egg, beaten 1 tsp vanilla Combine ingredients. Spoon into unbaked pie shells. Bake at 450°F for 8 minutes. Reduce to 350°F until crust is browned, about 7-8 minutes.

WORKSHOPS

MYSTERY QUILT WORKSHOP

DATE: January 25, 2020

PLACE: Lighthouse Hall, Qualicum Bay

FEE: $15.00 Maximum 60 participants

This workshop is very popular and we are registering folks for the wait list. Due to several withdrawals from the workshop due to personal reasons, the Wait list registrants will be contacted to replace those who become unable to attend the workshop. Remember this is a SECRET mystery so information will be revealed carefully. Details for preparation will be posted on the website and as a link from the calendar and also in the Membership Benefits—Workshop location.

CLUE….This year the Mystery Quilt is being designed to be a nice rectangular lap size that should be largely completed at the workshop.

BETWEENS are short demos of about 15-20 minutes held after adjournment of the afternoon meeting, and at 6:40 before the evening meetings. If you have suggestions for these topics, or if you would like to present a topic, please share these with anyone on the committee or send to us at [email protected] .

We will provide information regarding the future Betweens topics and presenters on the Guild Facebook page, plus we announce them before the Coffee Break at the afternoon meetings. Please note the January meetings will NOT have a “Betweens” due to the Garage sale activity. Betweens will return in February.

Workshops occur with the help of many volunteers as well. Thanks to all the help from Workshop committee “ANGELS” Lori, Mary, Nanette, Nancy and Carolyn.

At meetings look for a “COLORFUL ORIGINAL SIGN” that will designate the Betweens location.

DAZZLING DIAMONDS QUILT

Presented by Jackee Thaysen

DATE: March 7, 2020

TIME: 9:00 – 4:00

PLACE: Bradley Center

FEE: $50.00 Registration for this workshop began at the October meetings. The picture of the quilt made by Jackee may appear to be impossible for an inexperienced quilter, but it really is quite manageable for all. Once the construction of the quilt is explained in steps by Jackee, everyone should be happy with their creation.

There is a list of supply requirements and additional information available

from Jackee for participants when they register, and ALSO on the website –click on calendar for the link. This workshop will be so much fun. We enjoyed Jackee when she taught us the Stack and Whack quilt last Spring. The creativity in that workshop led us to want more from this clever quilter.

QUILTER’S CHRISTMAS SALE 2019

We are pleased to report that we had a successful Christmas Sale again this year.

Part of being a repeated success is credited to our Guild members who make up most of the merchants selling their wares on the day of the sale; those members who volunteer to assist on the day of the sale, and of course those members who come out and support our efforts by purchasing items crafted by our merchants.

We are set for 2020, so put November 28th, 2020 on your calendars and if you want to join in the fun contact Frankie either at a meeting or by email to secure a table for 2020.
