Arrowhead
Another election season is here. The board is developing the budget for the 2019-2020 fiscal year and the events schedule. If you are interested in volunteering on the Board of Directors, please follow the instructions on page 5.
The Arrowhead Property Owners Association continues to be a special community that thrives because of volunteerism. This past year, new volunteers have joined our community through joining the Board of Directors and participating in the events held throughout the year.
Arrowhead volunteers serve on various committees such as Communication Committee, Welcoming Committee, Nominating Committee, Neighborhood Watch, Communication Committee, Park and Recreation Committee, Long Range Planning Committee and the Bi Laws Review Committee. Volunteers show up for clean-up days, donate baked goods and refreshments for events like the second community Expo and Fall Festival. Members help at the newsletter “folding parties”. Last fall, generous members donated food to the Food Panty and will donate this year as well.
As a community, we came together to celebrate traditions like covered dish dinners, opening and closing the park, neighborhood clean-up, card nights, appreciation dinner, our second Fourth of July golf cart parade, community Expo, food drive and fall festival. We welcomed new neighbors and property owners making Arrowhead Beach their permanent home. None of this would be possible without the strong sense of volunteerism.
Arrowhead Beach is also a great place to instill skills like citizenship through volunteerism in children. We are always looking for new ways to promote volunteerism and parents are welcome to involve their children in the many opportunities to volunteer.
The Board of Directors work together to manage the business of the
property owners and listen to the concerns expressed throughout the year. We encourage our owners to participate in an open dialogue and express concerns directly to the Board. Your input is welcomed and everyone is encouraged to join us at the monthly meetings and contribute to the community conversation. Along with the suggestions and concerns, we encourage members to participate in solving problems. You can communicate with the Board of Directors by calling the office at 252-221-8331, email [email protected],
write to the APOA Board at 600 Sioux Trail, Edenton 27932, and/or attend a monthly business meeting.
I wish to thank the APOA Board members for their service to the community. They voluntarily meet twice each month (work sessions and association business meetings) to ensure business of the Association is carried out with efficiency and efficacy.
With the upcoming election cycle, the Nominating Committee has been formed and will be receiving nominations for the three available seats on the Board of Directors for 2019-2022. If you have concerns or are interested in effecting change, run for the Board. If you want to get involved in something positive that has a real impact, run for the Board. If you are seeking fellowship that comes along with being active in your community, run for the Board. You can nominate yourself or someone else. All nominees must be in good financial standing with the Association. See the insert for details.
Overall, the Board continues to receive positive feedback and continues to be inspired to work on your behalf. We are encouraged by the many people that have come together in the common goal to enhance our beautiful community.

The Watch Report By Dana Nicholas Neighborhood Watch Committee Chairman
On Halloween night, 4 Neighborhood Watch members in 3 vehicles patrolled Arrowhead Beach during the peak trick-or-treat hours of 5 PM to 8 PM. Members monitored the trick-or-treaters and gave out candy. We want to remind all AB residents to please make plans for any type of package deliveries this holiday season if you are not going to be home. Contact a neighbor to hold the packages for you or alert the delivery company to drop off the package at a secure location at your house or wait and deliver when you are home. Members reported 350 hours of patrol during the last 90 days. The next meeting of the Neighborhood Watch Committee will be announced for December. If you are interested in joining, call the APOA office anytime and leave a message. If you see something, say something. Call the Sheriff’s Office first. Then let the Arrowhead Beach main office know within 48 hours so that we can keep track of suspicious activity. Sheriff’s Office: 252-482-8484. Arrowhead Beach Office: 252-221-8331.
The Board of Directors wishes everyone a happy and safe holiday season.
We have two new neighbors that recently purchased homes in Arrowhead Beach. We welcome Dawn Hare and another new owner, Joshua Street. We encourage all our new property owners to attend the monthly business meetings and volunteer on committees and at events.
We send condolences to the friends and family of Michael Scalpi. He was a good friend to many people and will be missed.
Margaret Talbert has been transferred to a rehabilitation facility. We wish her the best in her recovery.
The APOA office will soon have a new handicap ramp. The Board of Directors approved building a handicap ramp to make easier access to the office.
In addition to the ramp, the board is working on plans to repair or replace piers and bulkheads.
The number of Tuesday night card games players has increased. If you
are interested in joining the group, they start playing every Tuesday evening at 6:30pm. No invitation necessary. All Arrowhead Beach residents are welcome.
There will be a “Love is in the Air” themed covered dish dinner dance on February 2nd at 6:00pm in the Clubhouse. We are taking music requests. Email or call the office with your selection and we will do our best to get your favorite tune on the play list. Email: [email protected] or call 252-221-8331.
Last issue, we informed our property owners that we could no longer deliver the newsletter at the outside of the mailboxes. You can still pick up a paper copy of the newsletter at the office and in the breezeway to the park. It will also be posted on the arrowheadbeach.com website. If you would like the newsletter emailed to you, please email [email protected]. The November-December and March-April newsletters will continue to be mailed.
Happy Holidays to All!

News from the Edenton-Chowan Food Pantry Join the “12 Families of Christmas” program. Over the past few years, an increasing number of families have come by or called the food pantry to see what items might be needed for the holidays. They shop with their children at a pre-arranged time so that the children can help stock the items to the shelves. This year, the food pantry is looking for 12 families willing to take on this responsibility. Minimum purchase $10.
If you or someone you know would like to participate in this educational and rewarding program, call the food pantry at 482-2504 or email to [email protected].
The food pantry is also preparing 300 “Holidays without Hunger” food baskets to be handed out to families during the holidays. The baskets will be handed out to eligible families during a three week period beginning Dec. 3rd.
Arrowhead Beach Food Drive To assist with the food pantry’s goal of 300 food baskets, the Board of Directors is sponsoring our 3rd annual food drive to support the Edenton-Chowan Food Pantry. You can donate foods such as canned fruits, vegetables, beans, dry milk, pasta, soups, canned meats (tuna or chicken), beans, peanut butter and canned vegetables. Food donations can be dropped off at the APOA office, the clubhouse, Bandon Chapel during services or at the Food Pantry at 1370 Broad Street on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday between 8:30 and 11:30 am. Checks can be mailed to Edenton-Chowan Food Pantry, PO Box 643, Edenton, NC 27932. For more information, please call 482-2504, email [email protected] or visit www.edenton-chowanpantry.org.
Cranberry Christmas Pudding By M. Claus
Ingredients
2 cups cranberries 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/3 cup boiling water 1/2 cup molasses 1 cup white sugar 1/2 cup butter, softened 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions 1. Lightly grease a 2-quart metal pudding mold or a clean 1-pound coffee can. Pick over whole cranberries; wash and drain.
2. Sift together the flour and salt; dredge cranberries in flour mixture.
3. Dissolve soda into boiling water and add molasses. Stir and allow to foam up.
4. Add to the flour and cranberry mixture. Mix together until well blended. Spoon into prepared mold or pan; cover with a double layer of aluminum foil and fasten with heavy elastic band or string.
5. Place into a deep saucepan and fill with water up to about the halfway mark on the pudding can. Cover saucepan and place over high heat. Bring water to boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 1 hour. Remove from water and allow to cool.
6. Prepare the sauce by mixing together the sugar, butter and cream. Cook over medium heat until thick, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and add vanilla.
7. When ready to serve the pudding, invert pan or open bottom of can and push through. Slice in 1/2-inch pieces. Pour sauce over individual slices of pudding.
Holiday Decoration Holiday Decoration Safety TipsSafety Tips
Fresh Trees—Place tree away from fireplaces, radiators and other heat sources. Keep your tree in a liquid solution of water and baking soda to keep your tree moist and fresh and won’t dry out.
Artificial Trees—Many artificial trees are fire resistant. If you buy one, look for a statement specifying this protection.
Lights—Indoors or outside, use only lights that have been tested for safety. Identify these by the label from an independent testing laboratory. Use no more than three standard-size sets of lights per single extension cord.
Turn off all lights on trees and other decorations when you go to bed or leave the house.
Never burn candles near evergreens. Burning evergreens in the fireplace can also be hazardous. When dry, greens burn like tinder. Flames can flare out of control, and send sparks flying into a room, or up the chimney to ignite creosote deposits. Plan for safety. Remember, there is no substitute for common sense. Look for and eliminate potential danger spots near candles, fireplaces, trees, and/or electrical connections.
Budget Preparation for Fiscal Year 2019-2020 Budget preparation has begun for fiscal year 2019-20 which must be approved by the Board at the January 12, 2019 business meeting. Budget presentations for the members will be held in the clubhouse

in the March/April 2019 newsletter for approval by the membership. The results will be given at the annual
meeting on April 6, 2019. Our budget is designed to maintain our facilities and infrastructure with the goal to enhance our quality of life.
