India Weaver earns CMAA

Once again it’s time for middle school basketball in Shelby County. To start the season, the SCIAA had its annual middle school bas-ketball meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to give coaches important information about rule changes, additional teams, im-portant dates, scheduling additional contests, and to improve as leaders. This year the coaches were treated to former Grizzlies Coach Lionel Hollins. Coach Hollins was gracious enough to take some personal time out of his busy schedule to talk to our middle school coaches. There were two things that stuck out in his presentation about life and basketball; one was that he empha-sized for the coaches to “have fun”. The second thing he stated was that “fundamentals are more important than X’s and O’s”. These two statements were profound because as coaches we can some-times lose our joy for the game. We can get caught up in winning and lose sight of how to make children better. We appreciate Coach Hollins attending the SCIAA Middle School Basketball meet-ing and speaking to our coaches.

Rhodes College has recently made two donations to SCIAA schools.

Late in the summer Rhodes College Athletics donated 28 large lockers to Germantown High School. Theses lockers were excessed due to renova-tions at Rhodes and made a great addition to the German-town Gym. The girls basketball and football coaches unloaded and installed the lockers to be used by the Freshman Football Team.

This fall, the Rhodes Men’s Soccer team upgraded their soccer balls and made a dona-tion of soccer balls to the mid-dle school girls soccer pro-gram. These balls were dis-tributed to American Way,

Ridgeway, J.P. Freeman, Chicka-saw, Hickory Ridge and Sher-wood middle schools to be used as practice balls for the teams.

Soccer is a growing sport at the middle school division and this donation certainly will not go to waste

INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- The Na-tional Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) is pleased to announce that India Weaver, Athletic Manager at Shelby County Schools, has been recognized by this association as a Certified Master Athletic Administrator.

To earn this distinction, India has demonstrated exemplary knowledge, contributions and on-going professional develop-ment in the field of interscho-lastic athletic administration.

The voluntary certification process included a thorough evaluation of the candidate's educational background, expe-rience, NIAAA Leadership Courses and professional con-tributions. It is culminated with a practical written pro-ject.

India Weaver is one of a very elite group of interscholastic athletic administrators nation-wide to attain this level of pro-fessionalism.

The NIAAA is a national pro-

fessional organization consisting of all 50 state athletic administrator associa-tions and more than 10,000 individual members. It is dedi-cated to promoting the profes-sional growth of high school athletic administrators and preserving the educational nature of interscholastic athlet-ics and the place of these pro-grams in the secondary school curriculum.
