SECURITY STICKERS Dear All, Trust all our families are keeping well. Our second term has come to an end. It is a pity we lost our Easter break owing to the extension of the second term, to catch up with missed days in January. In spite of the delays and uncertainties we had this term, I am happy to re- port that our teachers and students are on course with their planned work. Heavy rains this year posed a bit of a challenge to our construction projects which are now complete. However, we also realized our sloping grounds need to be attended to in order to keep the water away from our new Sports Centre and play areas. We are now working on plans to work out drainage so that we do not face this issue next year. Our Jungle Gym has caught on with our primary children and it is great to see them play on it whenever they are free. Parents have welcomed the uniforms and book outlet at the school and we thank Ms Evelyn Musonda for doing a super job there! Our debators won several accolades at the World Scholars Cup regional round in Lusaka and many of them were selected for the International round. Congratulations to all of them. Our young scientists also presented their projects at the Science Fair at different levels and we have noticed a growing enthusiasm to explore new ideas. We thank Grey Matter – The Bookshop who sponsored the prizes for the Secondary Science winners. The School Hall Committee headed by Mr Franco Nulli has been busy last few months liaising with the architect and we are delighted that the initial design has now been finalized. Our hall will be called the ZICCT Cultural Centre and will be located to the right of our gate as you en- ter the campus. It will have a seating capacity of 300 people and will also house the ZICCT offices and the Board Room. The hall will have a stage to host musical/drama events and have back-stage facilities for dressing up and storage. The centre will also be a venue for art exhibitions and conferences. The architects are now working on the detailed technical plans. We will keep you briefed as we move forward with it. We have issued security stickers to all our regular visitors to the school, including parents and teachers. If you have not got one, please contact Mrs Ferris and get your sticker so that you are not inconvenienced at the gate. With this arrangement in place we hope to keep vigil and prevent unauthorized people from entering our premises. All motorists without school stickers will be expected to stop and sign in the book at the gate. However, at the regular school drop-off and pick-up times the gate will be kept open to facilitate quick movement of traffic. We hope all our parents will comply and support this arrangement for the safety of our children and property. Our IGCSE and A Level students are getting ready to start their examinations very soon. On behalf of the Italian School community I wish them the very best and pray they will do well. Our third term is going to be another busy one starting on 9 th April and ending on 29 th June, 2018. Please take note of the dates on the calendar that are relevant to your family. Wishing everyone a great term ahead. Lalitha Seshamani Head of School

We have a lot going on in the Primary section at the School as we head towards the end of year. Although our afternoon club pro-

gramme has finished until September, we do have intensive sports training taking place for Athletics and Hockey. Many classes are

having their annual field trips taking place during these next few weeks as well as a number of class assemblies.

A couple of highlights this term are the annual ISAZ Primary Arts Festival taking place at ISL on May 19th. Our Music teacher is work-

ing on an entertaining piece to showcase. Please could all students from Grade 3 to 6 ensure that they bring a piece of artwork that

they have produced at home to school on Mon May 14th? These will then be put on display for parents to view from 15-17th May on

the Primary Veranda. The students in KS1 will be displaying artwork that they have composed doing the course of the school year in

their classes.

On Sat Jun 2nd the annual ISAZ Primary Science Fair will

take place at Chudleigh House School. The following stu-

dents have been selected to present their science projects – From G3 Kaamilah, Sarah, Rachel, Muhammed; from G4 Aryaan, Sa-

rah, Devain; from G5 Jessica, Nuklin, Mainza; and from G6 Thandiwe, John, Rakshit. We wish them well.

The Nursery, Reception, Grade 1 and Grade 2 Science Fair will be on Thu May 24th

Since were now in the cold season, wardrobe malfunctions with school uniforms are becoming commonplace. I urge you to stick

with our colour recommendations for jerseys, tights etc.

Thank you

Mr Ishmael Mbatata’s Trip to Zimbabwe

I would like to thank the Italian School Administration for the opportunity which was given to me to attend the 2018 Zimbabwe

Olympic Committee Course which was held in Harare from March 27th to April 12th. My trip to Zimbabwe enabled me to upgrade my

knowledge in sport and also to realise that we have a lot to do in sports if we are to produce Olympians not only from the Italian

school but within Zambia as a Nation. During the time I was in Zimbabwe we had an opportunity to go for outreach programmes

around the top schools, clubs and academies. We also had time to do outreaches in the rural and mining areas in Zimbabwe.

It was a great exposure for me to be part of this course. Below are some of the major topics that I learned about:

The introduction of African culture sports in the next All Africa Games to be introduced in schools and clubs; What people ex-

pect when they come to sports; Setting high standards in sports; Children’s traditional sports and values; Studying sports and

analysing; Advancing in sports; Selections in sports; Good ways in sports; The mutual relationship in sports with members;

Discussion/team talks in sports; Sports and human needs; Faith with your team and parents; Proper understanding between

coach and family of the Olympian or player; Family in sports; Duties of coaches and managers at high level; The strong and

weak points of parents with kids in sports; An expression of unity; Results to the community; Red Cross First Aid; and Selec-

tion for team sports.

We also had time to learn a lot on what is our major task as coaches and managers. The main purpose for me as a coach is to

make sure that I develop kids in various areas and also identify talent at a young age for the bright future of our schools, provinces,

clubs and the nation at large. This will indeed bring competition at International Youth Games and Olympics. All this has to start at

school level. Giving a child the proper coaching package will be my biggest role as a coach.

I believe Italian school will be the first ISAZ School to introduce some of these traditional sports if we put this in practice. I am con-

fident that we can go all the way to become a centre of traditional sports once we educate some of our staff and introduce this to

other schools. We had to spend time with families from different backgrounds during our outreach. It also made me realise that

creating a good family with parents, players, coaches and managers helps to build the sport family and helps the players to aim

high.

Once again allow me to appreciate the Admin of Italian School for such a great opportunity given to me.

GRADE 5 TRIP TO THE RTSA PARK

The term has just started and our students are already busy training as we prepare to participate in various hockey events

as well as athletics festivals. As you might be aware that hockey is one of our best sports as Italian School, we are very

positive that our boys and girls teams will bring more trophies this year than they did last year.

We hope to participate in all the age groups starting with the Under 9, U11, U13, U14 and U16 boys and girls.

For athletics, we are sending both our junior and the senior teams this year. Last year only the junior team participated but

this year we have some very good sprinters in Grade 10 and Grade 9 that are capable of doing well in the regional athletics

festival. The senior athletes that will perform well during the Inter Schools Festival will be selected onto the Midlands Athlet-

ics team that will compete in the National Athletics Championships scheduled for Levi Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on the

9th of June.

Our key sports events where we would love to see everyone get involved in are;

The Gilardi Hockey Cup on the 12th of May

The Primary Athletics on the 29th of May

Secondary Athletics on the 31st of May

Nursery and Reception Sports day on the 20th of June.

I would like encourage all our students and parents to take note of these dates. We need your participation and support

during these events.

The PE/Sports Department staff wishes all the students that are writing their final IGCSE and AS/A Level exams all the

best. To the rest of the students, we say, you should all work hard both in class and on the sports field to bring the best out

of you.
