An Evening to Remember

By JD Davis

In some respects, it’s like a costume

ball, you find yourself starring, trying to

identify your friends without their

shorts, tennis skirts, hats, and

sunglasses. The phrase you hear

throughout the evening is, “Goodness,

you look so different, I didn’t recognize

you with clothes on.” And I must say, the

ladies, in their heels and gowns, were

worth the price of admission.

The 2018 Tennis Gala was a

magnificent affair from start to finish.

From the decorations in the Agave

Room, to the entertainment, one

hundred and sixty-three friends

gathered to celebrate the holidays and

the blessings of being able to play one

of the greatest games on earth, TENNIS,

in such a stunning venue as

Saddlebrooke. The evening event was

sold-out early, and for those who

missed it, you really missed it.

The food, as always, was exceptional,

but the entertainment was a wonderful

surprise. You know how it usually goes;

a DJ plays music and if it’s good, a few

couples wander onto the floor and

dance. However, Harry Mathews,

brought the house down. He began the

evening on his SAX, with a slow, mellow

rendering of some holiday classics and I

thought, hey, he’s pretty good. When he

sang some ‘memorable oldies’,

accompanied with his guitar, you think,

‘hey, he’s really good’. With a packed

dance floor, and Harry, standing atop

his piano, belting out rock and roll,

switching between, his sax and guitar …

“we were all hopping and bopping to

the Crocodile Rock.”

As the song goes, “It’s a wonderful

time of the year,” but gathering with

fellow competitors, celebrating,

laughing, and dancing, it was certainly

an evening to remember.

Artistry in the STC

By TJ Duffy

Watercolor artist, tennis player

and SaddleBrooke Tennis Club

treasurer shares her work with the community. Some months back, I

had had the opportunity to visit

Kay Sullivan and seven of her

watercolorist colleagues at an

exhibition in Mountain View Ballroom West. The intimate

setting was perfect for displaying

her work and greeting friends. I

must say, Kay’s work on canvas is

quite impressive. Kay came to

SaddleBrooke eighteen years ago

and began her art career with a

drawing class by the SaddleBrooke Fine Arts Guild. Who would have

guessed that skill had remained

hidden until she finally had time to

explore it? She is now known in

the community for her pet portraits but she loves to

experiment with other mediums,

surfaces and themes. However,

watercolor is her first love. She says that the very first piece of

“real” art that she purchased in the

70s was a pen and ink drawing

with a touch of watercolor. She

has been drawn to it ever since.

When she

and her husband

Riley came to

Tucson for the

SaddleBrooke preferred guest

program, Kay

saw the work of

Diana Madaras

at the airport. She told Riley,

“That’s what I want to do! Look at

those purple shadows in

watercolor!” The rest is history. She took classes, worked for

Diana, took more classes, served

in every position of the Fine Arts

Guild, took more classes and kept

painting.

Travels over the years inspired

Kay to capture some of the scenes

she saw. In Barcelona, there were the stone-carved statues outside

the Gaudi church, Sagrada Familia.

In Capitol Reef National Park, the rock formations and trails were

stunning. In Austin, there were

cool looking cattle with huge

horns. In Portugal, there was a

calico kitty in the window. Her iPhone camera is always ready.

The biggest problem Kay has is

finding enough time to paint all the

things she wants to paint and still

have time to do all the other things that must be done: tennis, tennis

board meetings and tennis

bookkeeping.

After four years of exemplary service, Kay is “retiring” from the

STC Board of Directors. We all

appreciate her contributions to our

club and wish her well as she

paints the next chapter in her fruitful life.

NOTE: January Scramble OP days will be Tuesday the

22nd for the men & Friday the 25th for the ladies.
