DEAM is upon us! Throughout Canada and the USA, October has been deemed Disability Employment

Awareness Month. Throughout the month of October we use Facebook to highlight

some of Cosmo’s business partnerships that employ or provide op-

portunities to the men and women of Cosmo.

If you or anyone you know are looking for skilled workers here are 10 reasons why you should hire a person with a disability:

1. People with disabilities have talents, skills and insights that our workforce needs.

2. Inclusion of people with disabilities in your workplace can strengthen your business and employee morale.

3. Community programs and services can help with training, coaching, and re-training where required.

4. People with disabilities represent 1.3 billion people globally – plus 2.3 billion in family & friends.

5. One in every six Canadians has a disability of some kind and the UN describes this group as the fastest growing minority in the world! Reflecting the market you serve is important.

6. When you hire people with disabilities, you’re communi-cating to your customers that your company believes that people with disabilities make a contributions and deserve to be included.

7. According to Forbes Magazine, Innovation is higher at workplaces that reflect diversity and inclusion.

8. Improved understanding of workplace accommodations will help you retain valuable employees.

9. Most accommodations that allow people with disabilities to succeed at work cost nothing.

10. Learning how to include and accommodate people with disabilities creates ‘transferable skills’ for effective com-munication and leadership.

Giving Back To Our Community

Participants from Supported Work recently attended a volunteer appreciation BBQ at the Saskatoon Foodbank and Learning Center. They received an award for “Spirit of Community”. They were thrilled to receive this award which was well deserved for their dedication and hard work for their weekly contri-butions at the repack sta-tion.

Supported work will host another food drive for the month of October. Look for the Food Bank’s blue barrels to donate your non-perishable food items, which will be located in supported work, life enrichment, and the front office.

Thanks for your support!

Elmwood Goes to the Exhibition

From August 6th to the 9th,

the Elmwood Day Program

joined the Elmwood Recreation

team in all the Exhibition festivi-

ties. A group went to the Exhibi-

tion parade where they got to see dogs, horses, clas-

sic cars, and many awesome floats. Groups enjoyed

the food, drinks, watching and going on rides, and of

course shopping at the Exhibition.

We had a wonderful time, and we are already

looking forward to going again next year!

Plums, Plums, and

Plums!

A huge thank you to

Mr & Mrs. Janzen on the

lovely donation of plums

for participants and staff to

enjoy! They graciously

dropped of bags at our sat-

ellite locations & Cosmo

main centre. Anyone who

had the pleasure of enjoy-

ing them have shared they are delicious and sweet!

SUMMER ALWAYS ENDS WITH GOOD MEMORIES

Cosmo Sherbrooke - 2019

Barbecuing for the Colliers Cup

On Friday, September 6th, Cosmo participated in it’s third year at Colliers Cup. Colliers Cup is a 3-on-3 Street hockey tournament hosted by Colliers International. Through our connection with Colliers, we have had the opportunity to coordinate and run the BBQ and canteen for the day, along with providing ball runners for the afternoon.

We would like to give a big THANK YOU to the volunteers, staff, and program participants who helped make the day a success. Without you, there is no way this day would be possible.

Thank-you to Colliers International for this wonderful op-portunity to participate in your fundraising event. The par-ticipants thoroughly enjoy interacting with all who attend the BBQ. We look forward to a continued partnership in the future.

Summer at the

Cosmo Day program

at Elmwood The highlight of our summer at the Cosmo Day program at Elmwood was enjoying the sights and sounds of Saskatoon. We are thankful to the Community Lotter-ies Grant for providing us the op-portunity to enjoy the Saskatoon Zoo, a ride on the Prairie Lily, and a craft at the Glen at the Cross-mount. We enjoyed treats at Snowy Village, Dairy Queen, Jerry’s, and Pink Cadillac. We got caught in the rain at Taste of Saskatchewan but enjoyed the music. The SUM Thea-ter put on an amazing play which we greatly enjoyed, they did a fabu-lous job. We just barely avoided the rain at the Exhibition parade and everyone was able to enjoy the food, rides, games, and shopping at the Exhibition. This summer seemed to fly by so quickly it should get a speeding ticket. As the leaves begin to fall and everything tastes like pumpkin spice, we say goodbye to summer and we hold onto all the special memories we were able to make.

L.E. 2 Takes Off!

On August 22, Roy, Brendon, Evelyn, Andy, Liza, and Keith from L.E. 2 had the opportunity to go and enjoy a guided tour of the Saskatoon Aviation Museum. It was very interesting to hear about the different types of air-

craft's that were used in the wars. Andy and Liza had the opportunity to go in to the simulator plane that they used to train pilots in. Keith got to try on the outfit that a pilot would have worn back in the early days Evelyn got to sit in an old cargo plane. Roy and Brendon enjoyed the dif-ferent planes that we learned about. We would like to send a big thank you to Carrie (Beth) and Gary Hardy They were wonderful tour guides.

Gus Cherry October 15, 1986 – August 18, 2019

On Sunday, August 18, 2019, Gus Cherry passed away at the age of 32, surrounded by family and friends. During his 10 years at Cosmo, Gus en-joyed different outings such as picnics, going to the Jazz Festival, and going to the malls around the city. He loved being with his group and al-ways had fun dressing up for different Cosmo event such as Halloween. Gus also enjoyed listen-ing to music and audio books like Harry Potter. A celebration of his life was held at Hillcrest Memo-rial Gardens, and those in attendance shared po-ems, memories, and stories with each other about Gus. He had so many friends at Cosmo and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Kiwanis Club of Saskatoon

Celebrates 100 years of Serving Saskatoon

Please join Cosmo in congratulating and thanking the Ki-wanis Club of Saskatoon for their 100 years of serving Saska-toon. The Kiwanis Club has supported numerous Saskatoon initiatives over the past 100 years. For Cosmo, we are espe-cially thankful for the over 36 years of support that the Kiwa-nis Club has offered to our Rhythm Band. In addition, Cosmo would like to congratulate Jerry

Helfrich for his 51 years of volunteer work with the Kiwanis Club. For most of us at Cosmo, we know Jerry because of his weekly assistance with the Rhythm Band. This is a signifi-cant accomplishment and milestone, and Jerry we thank you for your lead-ership and all that you have provided to our community.

Summer Wind Up 2019

For most, September marks the end of summer and the start of cold weather, leaves changing colour, and busy schedules. Cosmo decides to celebrate this wild time of year with a summer wind-up. This much-anticipated event brings excitement amidst the chaos of September. This year, we chose a Summer Camping theme to plan our activities around. The after-noon kicked off with lunch catered by the staff at Cosmo including a barbecued hot dog, maca-roni salad, baked beans, and s’more ice cream sandwiches. Activities commenced around 1pm and con-tinued throughout the afternoon. We had a camp scene photobooth with a tent, camping chairs, and a beautiful night sky. We had a vol-unteer help run a campfire sing-along and sto-rytelling activity. For the craft, participants were given small wooden discs to decorate as orna-ments. A dance, as always, brought movers and groovers into the gymnasium. Telemiracle, as well as some other donors, gifted Cosmo with various items that we were able to sell in our Camp Store. Thank you to everyone who donat-ed to it, it was such a hit! To go along with the theme, we sent participants and staff on a build-ing-wide scavenger hunt. We were fortunate to have volunteers and staff help out with each station giving out clues, stamps, and items to fill their scavenger hunt bags! Thanks to everyone who helped make this event happen. We are so lucky to have so many people willing to step up and help make these events so successful!

Cosmo Acadia Highlights! The Acadia satellite location opened on Feb-ruary 1st 2019 welcoming eight program participants. We have been busy build-ing community partnerships with the Tykes and Tots Ear-ly Learning Centres at both St Anne’s School and Cardi-nal Leger. We have also cre-ated a partnership with the Walter Murray Collegiate’s life skills and work study class. Our participants

have had the opportuni-ty to be part of the Col-lege Park Community Garden this summer which is something that everyone has been able to help with and has

enjoyed. This summer, we enjoyed many special out-ings which included the Forestry Farm, Walter Lane, Theatre in the Park, Taste of Sas-katchewan, Fiddle Fest, and a visit to Lesya’s garden (past Cosmo staff member). Our group has also had the opportunity to go on several tours this summer at Sundog Alpacas, Ebon Stables, and a Geolo-

gy Building at the U of S. Our group has taken a few day trips such as a barbeque at Trina Mierau’s farm (Acadia Staff), a

geocaching adventure and a swimming day trip. It has been a very busy few months at Acadia and we look forward to building more commu-nity partnerships and hav-ing new adventures with our group!

Cosmo Work Team Employer:

Ashmeade & Low

Ashmeade and Low has been a part of supported work for over five years. Over those years, many participants have had the oppor-tunity to work there, such as Colin Brisebois, Roberta Miller, Jennifer Matthuis, Jordan Graves-Westfield, Janessa Vance, and Justin Tharpe. Three participants along with one job coach work there two days a week providing janitorial services like vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, and cleaning washrooms. We appre-ciate the opportunity to work for the amazing team at Ashmeade and Low. Thank you to Sherry, Lisa, and their team for all the support and for creating a great working environment for all our participants.

Just a reminder, the weather in the morn-ing is beginning to be quite cold when the buses pick everyone up. Please dress participants for the cool morning weather. We can always pack up their jackets and send them home if the weather warms up in the afternoon.

Tyrell, Victoria, and Reba attended the United Way Stuff the Bus and Annual Kick Off.

Cosmo takes on the U of S! On Monday, September 16th the University of Saskatchewan Men’s Huskies Hockey Team vis-ited Cosmo and played floor hockey against our ‘Cosmo All Stars’. What a game it was! Both teams showed excellent sportsmanship and team-work! The Huskies got off to a very early lead but the ‘Cosmo All Stars’ kept working hard and tied the game with 9 seconds remaining. In overtime Frank Binny fired a laser shot to the top corner to win the game!

Thank you to the Huskies for their visit and to all members of the ‘Cosmo All Stars’ for their excellent efforts and positive

attitudes!
