Echunga Community Times

As another slow month draws to a close, we can see the light in the (coronavirus) tunnel getting brighter. Coronavirus cases in South Australia are virtually zero, and the government’s restrictions are gradually being lifted in the careful shift towards normality. “Step 2” of the SA Govt’s easing restrictions has been brought forward to June 1, at which time various types of business such as cinemas, gyms, restaurants, cafes and pubs will be opening up to indoor patronage, with 1 person per 4 square metres limitations. Funerals will be expanded up to 50 people maximum. The public will be able to start to move around more freely around the state, with caravan parks and national parks open. These businesses will have to have implemented a “Covid-Safe Plan”. My understanding is that the Hagen Arms will, however, stick to the original date of June 8 before they open up to indoor dining. We can be thankful in SA, and more broadly in Australia, that we haven’t experienced the devastation of coronavirus-related cases and deaths in other countries. But we need to remain vigilant and alert if we are to avoid the emergence of a “second wave” - we need to continue to practice good hygiene and appropriate physical distancing. We mustn’t become complacent. With all this in mind, the Echunga Community Times will for the time being continue to only be published electronically, and with reduced content. Where we can, we will provide essential information about local businesses and services, along with a couple of entertaining articles. The business directory of our sponsors will also be retained. Have a safe month. Mark McDermid

Meadows Vet News With the good news continuing with Covid 19 we are still offering all our services including home visits with the extra safety precautions in place. How good is SA to become one of the first states to be virus free! The recent wet weather is causing a lot of hoof abscesses in horses, cattle, sheep & goats. The first signs of a hoof abscess include lameness and sometimes swelling above the hoof and up the back of the leg. The lameness can become quite severe – some horse owners get extremely worried in that it appears that their horse has broken its leg! Treatment is required especially to provide pain relief and to correctly diagnose the issue. Please remember that penicillin is NOT usually recommended in the treatment of horses for hoof abscesses unless secondary infection is occurring and that we cannot sell penicillin over the counter without a consultation. Please phone for advice if you suspect a hoof abscess in one of your animals.

Another reminder to horse owners. There have been reports again of a non vet dentist illegally using sedation to work on horse’s teeth. The work performed was a poor standard and in fact caused unnecessary pain to the horse. The sad reality is anyone in Australia can buy dental equipment for horses and call themselves an equine dentist. The result is horse owners then mistakenly think that they are specialists in dentistry. If you want your horse to receive the best dental care please use an experienced equine dental vet as they are the only ones who can sedate safely and legally, take x rays and

provide medications if needed. Go to www.dentalvets.com.au to find your nearest equine veterinary dentist. A reminder that Dr Greg is a fully qualified, experienced equine dental vet. The arrival of cooler weather means mice, snails and millipedes are starting to make their presence felt! We recently have had an increase in the number of pets eating rat and snail baits. If treatment is given early enough, it is usually effective, particularly so with the multi-feed rodenticides but the golden rule is DO NOT WAIT FOR SYMPTOMS TO APPEAR if you have even the slightest suspicion your pet may have eaten some poison! There are many rat poisons and snail baits on the market, and some are safer for pets and wildlife than others. No matter which bait you use, be especially aware that all of them pose some danger to pets. Most rat baits that you can get from the supermarket are based on anticoagulants. These baits are of two basic types. The first are those generally termed multi-feed rodenticides such as Ratsak and Racumin. This means that rats and mice must eat these types of baits over several days to become affected by them. The second are those that are single-feed rodenticides such as Talon and Bromokil. These rodenticides act more quickly. These rat baits are much more toxic to rats and pets and a single dose is more likely to cause poisoning. What are the signs of anticoagulant (rat bait) poisoning? If a pet is affected by an anticoagulant poison, the signs of the toxicity may not be evident for several days. It is extremely important that if you suspect that your pet may have eaten some bait but are not sure DO NOT WAIT FOR SYMPTOMS TO APPEAR. It is vital that you seek our help as soon as possible. When the signs do appear they relate to anaemia from blood loss. The blood can be lost from many areas of the body but commonly it is seen in bloodstained faeces and urine, blood appearing in the saliva or appearing from the nose. Breathlessness, from

blood pooling in the chest cavity, is a serious sign also. Weakness is very marked and the gums and tongue are usually noticeably pale due to blood loss and the resultant anaemia.

What are the signs of snail bait poisoning? The most common signs of snail bait poisoning are convulsions, continuous shaking, bizarre behaviour, and an unsteady gait. Signs will vary depending upon the product ingested so it is extremely helpful if you can bring the product packet with your pet. Please phone us immediately if you suspect your pet may have eaten any type of rat or snail poison!

Finally, a few reminders: • We are taking bookings for the next K9 Kindy program – this program is by far the best puppy program we

have seen! • Don’t forget there is a huge range of options for arthritis medications and supplements available – talk to us

about what would be best for your pet if showing signs of arthritis. • Having pet insurance can be very beneficial in helping to cope with a large unexpected vet bill. We get to deal

with a number of companies for both small animals and horses and are more than happy to let you know which companies seem very good to deal with if a claim has to be made!

• Calving season is upon us! Please remember if there has been no progress in calving within 3 hours for a heifer or 2 hours for an older cow please call us for help!

What I’m Reading

The Secrets She Keeps by Michael Robotham Everyone has an idea of what their perfect life is. For Agatha, it’s Meghan Shaughnessy’s. Agatha is pregnant and works part-time stocking shelves at a grocery store in a ritzy London suburb, counting down the days until her baby is due. As the hours of her shifts creep by in increasing discomfort, the one thing she looks forward to at work is catching a glimpse of Meghan, the effortlessly chic customer whose elegant lifestyle dazzles her. Meghan has it all: two perfect children, a handsome husband, a happy marriage, a stylish group of friends, and she writes perfectly droll confessional posts on her popular parenting blog—posts that Agatha reads with devotion each night as she waits for her absent boyfriend, the father of her baby, to maybe return her calls. When Agatha learns that Meghan is pregnant again, and that their due dates fall within the same month, she finally musters up the courage to speak to her, thrilled that they now have the ordeal of childbearing in common. Little does Meghan know that the mundane exchange she has with a grocery store employee during a hurried afternoon shopping trip is about to change the course of her not-so-perfect life forever.

Constable on the Hill and Constable on the Prowl by Nicholas Rhea

The Constable books are probably Nicholas Rhea's best known work, since they form the rootstock from which the much-loved TV series, Heartbeat, sprang. Author Nicholas Rhea drew on his own experiences as a local bobby in a small Yorkshire village in the 1960s to chronicle the career of Constable Nick, from his first arrival in Aidensfield in Constable on the Hill (first published in 1979) to his retirement in Constable over the Hill (2011). Constable on the Hill and Constable on the Prowl first two books in the 38 book series.

Episode 1: York Minster. Although it’s known as York “Minster”, it is still a “Cathedral”, as “Minster” is defined as “any large or important church, especially a collegiate or cathedral church”. It is a stunningly beautiful building, both inside and out. Built over 800 years ago, York Minster contains half of all the world’s medieval glass, and has the largest stained glass window in the world. Robinson describes some of the many dramatic events that occurred here, including bishops that defied the Nazis, the appointment of the country's first black bishop, and the consecration of the world's first female bishop.

Episode 2: Canterbury Cathedral. A World Heritage site, this cathedral is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the UK, with nearly one million visitors a year from all over the world. Built over 1,400 years ago, Robinson explains how the cathedral was founded, and how, after the

cathedral burnt down, it was rebuilt by the Normans as a symbol of their power. Over time it became hugely wealthy thanks to its role as a major site of pilgrimage following the infamous murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket, who was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1162 until his murder in 1170, and subsequently venerated as a saint and martyr by both the Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion. He engaged in conflict with Henry II, King of England, over the rights and privileges of the Church and was murdered by 2 of the king’s knights in Canterbury Cathedral.

B r i ta i n ’ s C a t h e d ra l s w i t h To ny Ro b i n s o n Recently shown on SBS TV, this 6-part series turned out to be more interesting than I expected.

Hosted by the ubiquitous Tony Robinson, this series covers 6 of Britain’s most impressive cathedrals. Robinson has been a household name on British (and Aussie) TV or decades. Perhaps most famously, he appeared as Baldrick in the Blackadder comedy series starring Rowan Atkinson which first aired almost 40 years ago. Since then he’s hosted numerous documentaries such as Time Team (featuring archaeological digs in the UK), Coast to Coast, and Walking Through History (including one series filmed in Australia including Hahndorf).

As with most of his documentaries, for this Cathedral series Robinson is an entertaining presenter with a reasonably animated style of narration sprinkled with an occasional amusing quip. He provides a mix of known and lesser known facts about each of the Cathedrals.

Episode 3: Salisbury Cathedral. Considered one of the leading examples of Early English architecture, it was consecrated over 760 years ago, after one of the biggest engineering projects of the Middle Ages which saw it moved from a wind-blasted Iron Age hill fort to its current location in just 38 years. Since 1549, it’s had the tallest church spire in the UK at 123m. It also has the largest cloister and the largest cathedral close in Britain at 80 acres.

Episode 4: Durham Cathedral. One of Britain's first Unesco World Heritage sites, the cathedral is over 900 years old and built like a fortress. The bishops at Durham were so powerful that they were given the title Prince-Bishop to reflect their huge wealth and influence.

Episode 5: Liverpool Cathedral. This is the Church of England's newest cathedral, and the largest in Britain. It was designed in the Gothic style by Giles Gilbert Scott, who also designed the red telephone box. It took 74 years to build. It is where Paul McCartney composed and performed his first classical piece of music, the Liverpool Oratorio.

Episode 6: Winchester Cathedral. Consecrated in 1093, it is the longest medieval cathedral in northern Europe. It’s the burial place of novelist Jane Austen, although only four people attended her funeral. Winchester's bishops were among the richest, most influential and most badly behaved in the country - some were wealthier and more powerful than even England's kings.

This series is available for free viewing on SBS OnDemand until June 19. MMcD.

Funny Quips I have the heart of a lion and a lifetime ban from the Taronga zoo. Wife says to her programmer husband, "Go to the store and buy a loaf of bread. If they have eggs, buy a dozen." Husband returns with 12 loaves of bread.

Communism jokes aren't funny unless everyone gets them.

What did the pirate say when he turned 80 years old? Aye matey.

What do the movies titanic and the sixth sense have in common. Icy dead people.

Have you heard about those new corduroy pillows? They're making headlines.

Two men meet on opposite sides of a river. One shouts to the other "I need you to help me get to the other side!" The other guy replies "You are on the other side!"

I couldn't figure out why the baseball kept getting larger. Then it hit me. Guy walks into a bar and orders a fruit punch. Bartender says "Pal, if you want a punch you'll have to stand in line" Guy looks around, but there is no punch line. I've been told I'm condescending. (that means I talk down to people) How did the hipster burn his mouth? He ate pizza before it was cool. Before your criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you do criticize them, you're a mile away and have their shoes. What's ET short for? He's only got little legs. What's the difference between a dirty old bus stop and a lobster with breast implants? One is a crusty bus station the other one is a busty crustacean. Why aren’t koalas actual bears? They don’t meet the koalafications

It's hard to explain puns to kleptomaniacs because they always take things literally. Some people think it's romantic to carve their names on trees in the park while on a date. I'm more worried about why they're bringing a knife on their date. 2 cows are grazing in a field. 1 cow says to the other, "You ever worry about that mad cow disease?". The other cow says, "Why would I care? I'm a helicopter!".
