    THE LAWYER’S ROADREVIEW

    BY PETE PATTERSON

The CongressoAs of this writing the Bush administration has leaked

a few billion in loans to the auto industry with a mandateattached to fix themselves by the end of March 2009.Congress has not been so generous.

And perhaps this is better. During the debates overCongress authorizing loans to the car makers many ideasfor Congressional control were floated most of whichsounded a lot like state mandated production of the sortthat brought citizens of the Soviet Union and India thevery best a planned economy could offer; a really lousycar, generally not available for purchase. We need not worryabout this being rushed to market here either. Assumingthe government does indeed end up owning GeneralMotors, it appears there will be years of work to generatethis politically acceptable vehicle, and in the end few willwant it anymore. A little like Amtrak.

To get a jump on things, my comrades and I havebeen thinking about what the eventual auto mandated byCongress would look like. Most often offered as part ofthe mandate the car has to be “green”. If this is going to bethe choice of our public over other hybrid vehicles thatostensibly sell well, the car has to have enhanced “greenness”.

Perhaps a biomass induction system fixed to the backend of the car would allow the occupants to toss in compost, left over Freedom fries, outdated continuing legal educationmaterials, anything that could burn in the rear mountedfurnace and be converted to energy. Given the farm lobbyhowever, the car would run best on ethanol, or even rawcorn. The manual would forbid the use of sugar beets fromBrazil lest you void the warranty. Note that warranty isonly two years long in the case of the House version of theCongresso.

Of course the main propulsion and braking system isfound through holes in the floorboard, a Fred Flintstoneapproach which are supplemented by pedals the passengersare instructed to employ to compensate for their extraweight in the vehicle, sort of a user fee for riding along. That’s right we go back to the stone age with this model, how green can we be?

The car rides best on the bridge to nowhere, but if you have to turnoff on to some state route and find the going tough balloons deployfore and aft and fill with Congressional Hot Air, to give the impressionof a better ride. The air reservoirs can be refilled at any state capital.

The car pulls hard to the left, or the right, making travel in astraight line to a given destination difficult, just as in Congress. However, if you buy shares in pork projects around the country, saya waste water treatment plant in Idaho Falls, keeping the vehicle oncourse is much easier. Debate over the color will last for years, themembers equating this issue to race, thus leading a rather boringcompromise: red, white and blue.

The vehicle expands as well as the family grows and contracts.A skate key is issued to lengthen the middle. The body is made ofsolar panels to power the head lights and radio. One flaw of course isthat one just cannot drive all night on the energy produced in thismatter, unless you have a battery, but that is not truly green so auxiliarypower cranks are installed where window controls would normallybe placed. Twin cords on the left and right front seats allow thedriver and passenger to alternately pull the windshield wipers backand forth, saving further energy.

To start the car, one must enter a valid social security or tax IDnumber on to the touch pad on the dash, thus satisfying severalconstituencies.

A “Patriot chip” is hidden somewhere in the vehicle to track themovements of the drivers transmitted via satellite to Washington.“Patriot” is an acronym for “Pathetic Attempt Towards RighteousImmigration Or Truth”. The right donations to the right people canhave this removed. Major contributors to congressional campaignsare found in the appendix of the manual.

I know I have said this before, but it bears repeating: It’s not thateasy being green. "

It’s not just for the LUCKY!It’s not just for the LUCKY!It’s not just for the LUCKY!It’s not just for the LUCKY!It’s not just for the LUCKY!

    Tulalip Resort Casino

    Saturday, March 7, 2009 5:00pm

It’s close to that time of the year again—the Snohomish County Bar Association and Snohomish County LegalServices’ Annual Dinner & Auction. This year we have a new venue, the Tulalip Resort Casino. We are veryexcited about the location. From all reports, this will be fabulous venue, with excellent food and service. Manypeople are booking rooms at the Resort for that night so they can stay late at the auction and bid on more items.

Your favorite items from previous auctions will still be here, from the dessert auction to Geoff Gibb’s Barbeque toweekend stays at local resorts. We will also have some new items for you to bid on. One example is an “InstantWine Cellar”. As part of this item, we are asking everyone to bring one bottle of wine as a donation. The bottleswill be combined and auctioned off together in the live auction portion. Just think, you could instantly acquireover 200 bottles of wines. What wine connoisseur wouldn’t love this! Another new development is that we hopeto have an on-line catalog for you to preview prior to the actual auction. See Snohomish County Legal Servicesweb site for more details.

The auction is more important this year than ever. The ranks of low income persons needing civil legal aid areswelling at the same time funding opportunities for legal aid are shrinking. This year Snohomish County LegalServices is facing serious budget cuts due in part to the financial crisis and increasing costs. This means cuts instaffing and interpretative services, which in turn leads to cuts in the amount of legal services offered to the lowincome families in Snohomish County.

So, how can you help? First and foremost, come to the Dinner and Auction and bid on items. Second, fill out aprocurement form and donate articles for the auction. Third, invite your friends and co-workers to the auction.Fourth, consider sponsoring the auction. In return for your monetary donation, you will receive recognition at thevenue and in the auction program, as well as free admission tickets for the auction.

If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me or Threesa Milligan, ExecutiveDirector of Snohomish County Legal Services. We look forward to seeing you on March 7th!

    NORTH SOUND COLLABORATIVE LAW

Collaborative law is “a different way to divorce.” It is supportive, considerate, sensible, constructive, and mutual. Disputes are resolvedrespectfully. Ultimately, the collaborative law process creates “sharedsolutions that acknowledge the highest priorities of everyone involved.”

In this model, lawyers work with other allied professionals toaddress the divorcing couple’s emotional, financial, legal andparenting issues. Most importantly, collaborative team membersagree not to litigate their disputes. If litigation is inevitable, clients arereferred to trial attorneys and the collaborative attorneys withdraw.
