Volume 34 Issue 10 October 2020 South Salem Senior Center still has its doors closed to the public. Roughly six and a half months now. I was there the other day and the center was devoid of anyone buy myself. It was so very quiet, I felt so sad as I strolled through it. Some of you might remember Francis Fredrickson and her presence in the thrift shop. She was very fond of stuffed animals, when they came in as a donation she would take them home and sanitize them. Well as I looked around I saw about five of her little creatures. I sat on the sofa and picked up a little bear. I just sat and talked to that little bear as if she were Francis. I am sure she would have told me to get a grip. I told her we had received some nice donations. Some for the thrift store and some monetary. I also told her we took in about $ 350.00 in dues this month. During this frightening time of out of control fires and oppressive smoke most of us felt helpless. We could sit back and watch the sheer nightmare of it on the television or on our computers. Some of us have sent in money, others have personally delivered donations to the fire victims. I hope this doesn’t stop when the smoke dissipates. We will need to continue for some time. I want to share some firsthand knowledge of generosity that took place right here in the Center. Most of you have heard about Soup R Meals. This Catering business starts right here within the Centers kitchen. It is owned and ran by Todd Wieweck and his family. He also has James who is his young side kick. It says a lot about Todd when one considers that about 350 of his clients donated money so his team could create meals for fire victims. A hotel here in town opened their doors to people displaced because of the fire. Todd and his team delivered meals to the hotel and I believe the fairgrounds. I have always been a supporter of Todd’s. But sometimes a blessing can come out of a crisis. Todd has also been present during the Covid Pandemic. He has been aware of shut ins and taken steps to help. I only hope after we get through this that Soup R Meals will be remembered and considered for a culinary delight. None of us know at this time when the Center will reopen. But I would encourage anyone that would be interested in volunteering or running for an office let me know. When we open maybe we can help you find your niche. Stay safe, take care of your body and emotions. Call that special friend. Blessings to you The SSSC would like to recognize Meals on Wheels for providing meals service for our seniors in these pandemic and forest fires smoke conditions. A special recognition to Kaila for her dedication and welcoming smile to our seniors members to distribute meals 5 days a week. Way to go Kaila Aubol-young !! Crafters News !

The Monday Afternoon Crafts group continues to meet in the parking lot on Mondays from 1:00 to 3:00, unless there is a holiday on Monday, as happened on Labor Day. Whenever that hap-pens, we switch to Wednesday. This year, there was too much smoke filling the air, so no one went. It just wasn’t safe, even wearing a mask. But, there is still news from the crafters. They were asked what they were doing with all of their free time because of the pandemic. Karen told about having a garden plot in Sunny-side Gardens. She enjoys working there and raising produce for her own use. She also do-nates the extra to Salem Harvest, which is sup-ported by farmers in the area that donate their extra produce to them. Salem Harvest then do-nates the produce to Marion Polk Food Share. She also volunteers with Salem Harvest along with taking care of her own yard. She didn’t

mention all of the knitting that she does with our group! Another gardener in our group is Betty. She de-scribed the Aero Garden that she uses to start some flowers and vegetables. She has 2 indoor trays in her bathroom where she starts flowers and vegetables. They utilize water, nutrients and special lights. It takes 16 hours to start let-tuce. Then she has more planters outside that are situated on the railing of an upper deck. These are too high for the deer to destroy. She raises lettuce, peppers, lavender, and flowers in these. Velma is a people person. She is concerned about her acquaintances who don’t have much contact with others. She spends a lot of time maintaining contact with them. She also spends at least an hour every day riding her recumbent bike to insure that she gets exercise. She also spends a lot of time crocheting items to donate. Her work is much appreciated.

GARDENERS.....harvest time is upon us......the beautiful squash, pumpkins, Indian corn is a stun-ning sight on a front porch, dining table, window sill.........wherever you want to display these gourds. Hoping your tomatoes did well, ours were not a huge success but we enjoyed a few from our deck pots. Until we are able to meet again, keep your hopes high that it won't be tooooo much longer! Barbara, chairwoman

Dear Camille: I thought that I would let you know what I have been up to. I and three others dubbed (Richmond Rosies) have made over 6,200 facemasks for many organizations needing them. I have also made 15 hospice throws, 20 homeless hats for winter, and over 50 pairs of wrist warmers! I planted six cherry tomato plants and was overwhelmed with tomatoes. I share them with all of my neighbors! Plants are over 7 feet high! Linda Doerfler
