This is hugely important to our school as it allows us to become familiar with and refine our processes so that if we did need to evacuate the school our staff and children will be well versed in what is required and calm in its implementation. This is vitally important in regard to the recent bomb threats that have effected a number of Darwin schools. This week’s evacuation went very smoothly with children and staff assembling on the basketball courts. Congratulations to everyone involved! It is great to know that we are well prepared in the event of a real threat. Staff Congratulations Transition teacher Lindsay Tweedie has recently given birth to a baby girl, Alana Faye, many weeks earlier than expected. Despite being tiny, baby and mother are doing very well. Congratulations and best wishes to Lindsay and Damon from the Leanyer School community Student Accident Insurance Parents are often surprised to discover that schools and Departments of Education do not have insurance to cover injuries students receive at school. This includes broken limbs, hospital and ambulance costs, medical bills and time away from work. As principal, I have often had the unpleasant job of explaining this to parents when their child has sustained a significant (and costly) injury. If you wish to take out student accident cover to prevent this financial strain, many insurance companies offer such policies. Open Afternoons 1.30-2.30pm We love having you share the learning happening in our school! Leanyer School holds Open Afternoons once a term where families and friends are invited into the school and children share their learning focus. This has proven to be very popular with families and we wanted to give you as much time as possible to organise your time to attend. Please invite anyone who your child would like to celebrate their learning. This term’s Open Afternoon will also have a Harmony Day focus in some classrooms. The Open Afternoons for 2016 are: Term 1 – Wednesday 30 March (week 10) Term 2 – Monday 20 June (week 11) Term 3 – Thursday 29 Sept (week 10) Term 4 – Friday 9 Dec (week 9)

Primary Music Institute After school classes in keyboard, guitar and drums are being conducted at Leanyer School by Primary Music Institute. The school is very happy to be able to offer families this service, however please understand that your arrangement is with Primary Music Institute and not the school. If you would like to enrol your child please contact them directly – see insert in this week’s newsletter. Ahhh – finally rain! Enjoy the cooler weather. Anne Principal [email protected]

At Leanyer School we value support from our parent volunteers. There is a lot of educational research that suggests that parent and school partnerships offer the best opportunities for children to succeed at school and in the future. According to kidshealth.org the reasons to volunteer include: Parent volunteers offer a huge resource and support base for the school community while showing their kids the importance of participating in the larger community. Not only will the school reap the benefits of your involvement — you will, too. By interacting with teachers, leadership, and other parents on a regular basis, you'll gain a firsthand understanding of your child's daily activities. You'll also tap into trends and fads of school life that can help you communicate with your kids as they grow and change (all without intruding on their privacy or personal space). http://kidshealth.org/en/parents/school.html So how do you get involved at Leanyer? Classroom teachers always value parents and caregivers help to support a number of programmed areas. Please speak to your child’s classroom teacher and see if you can help in some way. Alternatively, teachers may approach you. Please note: All parents/ caregivers who

volunteer on a regular basis must hold an

Ochre Card.

All parents/ caregivers must sign in at the front office when they are at school

during school hours.

Senior Years

Students at Leanyer School use Learning Goals to improve their learning and achieve success. Students work with teachers to identify, explore and develop personal learning goals and strategies to achieve them. They monitor and reflect on their own development and celebrate their achievements. Learning Goals are meaningful to each child and are achieved at different rates and times of the year.

PRIORITY PROJECTS: 2016 BUDGET

One of the School Board’s major responsibilities is the development of the school’s annual budget. Approximately 90% of the school’s budget is provided by the Department of Education with the remainder being provided by parent contributions, trading and fundraising. All fundraising proceeds are allocated by the School Board to projects of highest priority. In determining the budget, the School Board takes advice from its Business Subcommittee which comprises parent and staff members of the Board.

The School Board invites parents, staff and students to suggest projects or purchases which they believe would enhance the environment, facilities or learning opportunities for the children at Leanyer School. The Board will consider all suggestions and determine which projects are to be funded in the 2016 budget. Projects supported by Fundraising over the last few years include:

Laptops, I-pads, storage trolleys

Interactive Whiteboards

Touch Screens – art room and library

Class furniture

School signage and SWPBS

Middle Garden Renovation

Library (incl. SRC Proposal)

Reading Scheme and storage

Playground Equipment – preschool

Paved seating around Gather’n Goss

Upgrade Preschool cubby house

Shade over playground near Mod 5

Additional playground equipment – installation

When submitting a proposal, please indicate the level of priority that you believe this should have and an approximate cost. This will ensure that your proposal is able to be fully and carefully considered for this or future years. If you would like to submit a proposal for equipment, furniture, curriculum initiatives, building improvements or anything which you believe will improve the school or our children’s learning opportunities, please

complete the form below and return it to the school office by Friday 18 March.

(Please Note: as Business Subcommittee meets on 23 March to consider all proposals, 2016 suggestions cannot be received after this date)
